How did (or do) you pick your goal?

I know that there isn't really ever an "end point" and the goal line is fluid; even our friends who have called "goal" are contemplating going back into WLM. But this was spurred by a conversation I had with a friend of mine I introduced to JUDDD. I told her where I started (199), where I was now (167.6) and what my goal was (130). I did also tell her, though, that I thought 130 might be unrealistic for me and she agreed. I'm 5'2" with a 6.5" wrist which technically puts me as a "large frame". But for further frame of reference, at my heaviest I was wearing 12s (tight) and 14s, I'm now comfortable in 12's or they're too big, and wearing some 10s. Haven't gotten or tried any 8's yet.

I know body fat calculations are imprecise, even when measured (unless I'm forking out $$$ for the water displacement deal). But I went online and used a few different calculators and arrived at a BF% between 26-32% (yes, quite the range). At 167.6#, this gives me somewhere between 43.5-53.6 pounds of fat. Assuming this is correct, my lean body mass (ie - the weight of bones, muscle, internal organs, etc) is 114-124.1 pounds. The "fitness" level of body fat is 21-24% which gives me a range of 137-153 pounds.

The frustrating thing about this is that I need to get to 136 for my stupid BMI to no longer be considered "overweight". (I like that I'm fretting about this when I'm still 4# from no longer being "obese" - talk about the cart in front of the horse!)

I thought about waiting until I hit 150-155, depending on how I feel at that point, and seeing about getting a body composition to see exactly where I'm at in my weight loss and goals. I do have muscle - I ride, run, do farm chores, etc and at some point I guess I don't care what the scale says anymore but how I look & feel. To be honest though, given what changes have taken place in the last 30# I've lost, I just don't see how another 15-20# would make the differences I'm hoping to see in the mirror. But I also don't want to be one of those people perpetually beating my head against an unobtainable goal.

I'm not really the type who can just "wait and see" - I need to have something to shoot for. Even if its an intermediate goal. I'm ok with flexibility but its got to be there.

Thank you for any insight you might be able to give me...I want to be healthy but I also want to be realistic!!

I assumed I wouldn't lose any of my current lean body mass, and set a goal of 20 percent body fat. That puts me at about 185-190.

I did pay for a hydrostatic body fat test, and continue to have one a few times a year to make sure I'm keeping on track. It's actually not near as expensive as I first assumed: my tests are only $40 each time!

I'm 5'6.5", with all bone tests showing that I have a very large frame, and tests show that my LBM at around 155 lbs, so clearly I'm never going to be a waif.

My goal is to keep the lean body mass, even though the resulting goal weight is still supposedly overweight, according to BMI, which I don't put stock in. Twenty percent body fat is ideal to slightly low for a female non-athlete, so I think that's a high standard to meet, especially since I'll be forty by then. I haven't been under 200 since I was about 12 years old.

When I started losing a year and a half ago, I set my goal at 120. That was my goal about 15 years ago, and although I got to 135, I never got any lower. I looked and felt darn good at 135 at age 36, so awhile back, I revised my goal weight to 140. I think that will be more realistic at age 47. It's just below BMI that puts me in the normal range though. BUT, I do reserve the right to amend that when I get there. Like you, I'll want to see how I look and feel at those weights.

If I could get the hydrostatic test done for $40 I would do it in a heartbeat as I get closer to goal! Where did you have that done Ntombi?

If you google "body fat test (your city)," you'll probably come up with some options. I use a company that uses specially outfitted trucks that travel around to different gyms. It's bodyfattest, and it's $50 the first time, $40 for repeats.

But there are other similar options all around the country.

I picked the mid-point of the BMI range as a 'try it and see how you feel when you get there goal'.

However, now that I'm 2lbs away from that goal, it confirms a sneaking suspicion I've had for the last few pounds. I'm about 5-6 inches broader in the waist than I thought I would be. Similarly, other areas are broader than I thought would be the case.

I need to reconsider my goal weight. I think somewhere between 25-28% body fat is feasible for me, much as I'd prefer it to be lower.

Nevertheless, my next project is to keep within this weight range while experimenting with a ketogenic management of the migraines as I find these very disruptive.

I initially picked 112, but fairly early on changed that to 117. At 126 I felt good and most of my clothes fit so I called goal, but now after maintaining for a few months I'm definitely thinking about going for that 117-115 goal. I haven't quite decided yet. I'd like to lose my pooch, but would not like to lose from some other areas so it is still up for debate.

I picked 135 to start but have lowered that to 126 as i think that may be feasible - whether it would be sustainable remains to be seen. My dream goal would be 112 to 120 but at my age, 53, i really don't know if that would be possible. I'm 5'3" and have a small frame.

I'm 5'4ish (I think I've shrunk a little) and kind of small framed. I'm not sure what you'd call it, when you have a small upper body and ample hips, naturally, lol. My wrists are slightly below 6". I have been able to maintain 120-125 after age 30, but it was very ideal and almost perfect for me. Later in life, 135-145 were easier to maintain...My goal was not picked with any scientific reasoning behind it, but with the fantasy that 130 is achieveable with JUDDD. I will be happy at anything below 150, I believe...at least for a good while.

When I first decided to get the weight off I didn't have a number in mind, I just decided to measure myself with clothes and stick with it. About 9 months later I liked the way I looked so I weighed and I was 130. I liked the number and started weighing more often so I would stay there. I maintained 130 for about 7 months and then wondered what 125 would look like. After I got there I tried for 120 because it was this fantasy number I'd had in my head since I was 20. When I got to 120 I looked emaciated so I decided on 125 and I think my body really likes it here.

I think, for me, GOAL will be where I think I can safely maintain while LIVING LIFE. It is not my dream to be tiny at all. I am large framed and 5'8" and I would love to be fully into a size 8. Right now I am size 10. So I think if I can lose another 10 pounds, 8's will be an option for me. Now, that being said, I currently have some 12's that fit perfect, 10's that are baggy and even a few 8's that fit. So, that being said, I am going with the attitude of majority of my clothes 8, the sizing here IMHO is just LOONEY!

I started out with a goal of 175. That's right at the border of healthy/overweight BMI, but I honestly never thought I'd get under 200.

When I got to 175, I wasn't happy with my body and decided to shoot for 165. I got to 165, and the weight loss slowed quite a bit. I was at a healthy weight, and I was wearing 8s and 10s. I decided to call goal then. I went to 5:2, and then to not fasting at all, and dropped a few more pounds. I was maintaining fairly effortlessly between 155-159 for about 4 months.

Now I've decided to lose a little more, and have adjusted my goal to 145. I'm 5'9" and can't figure out what my frame size is. My wrist measurements have changed as I've lost weight, even though I always thought my wrists were slender even when I was big. Right now, they're around 6" and that puts me at a small/medium frame. If I go by that, I can go as low as 125 and as high as 165 depending on the calculator I use.

It's all so . I figure I'll get to 145 and reassess at that time.

You look like the oerfect weight to me, Dawn. At 5'9, I imagine 125 would be painfully thin. I know the charts are a good tool, but the mirror and pictures don't lie.

Yea. Hmmm. I don't have any scientific answer, either. I picked 135 because that is where I've always landed before when losing weight and I've always felt pretty good there. 115-125 was always my goal in my 20s, but I am in my mid 40s now and the only thing I care about any more is being able to actually MAINTAIN a loss. Never been able to do it, and that is my goal these days. Not the number! If I only stay where I am right now, I will be over the moon. In fact, you all need to remind me of that if I complain about the evil scale again.

Now, do I love what I look like now? Nope. I will probably move my goal number down, but at this point, it is just a fun thing. Could I really get to 125? That'd be cool! However, if I do not and this is my set point, that's cool, too. I will learn to love my gut. (I will, I will...) LOL

I chose 126 because it is 9 stone, lol.

When I was younger I like to have 9 stone as my very top weight. But, at 66 this month, I think it is about right for me. I am 5'3' ish and medium framed.

I have been maintaining within 3 pounds of this for over a year. Before that I was a bit lower 121/4 and I liked how it felt but wan't so keen on how it looked 'necccid', kind of 'empty'.

I agree that having a goal is important, but being ready to adjust it is a good thing too. And with JUDDD or LC this doesn't mean starving yourself. Though I had to go to very low calories on LC to get under 130. (Because I ate too much...)

I chose 150 because it's the weight that the BMI calculator says is "normal" for me. And in my earlier 20's, I got down to 155 and liked the way I looked, so I thought 150 would be safe.

But as I get closer to it, I've been wondering if I'll want to lose more at that point. I probably will. The possibility of being "thin", not just average but actually thin, was never something I thought I could have. But my thinking is starting to change on that

When I was growing up, the standard for figuring your weight for women was 100 pounds + 5 pounds for every inch above 5'. Plus or minus 10%. I'm 5'8", so that's 140, with a range of 126-154. My 'dream' weight is 140, but my goal is 154. I would like to be in what I consider 'normal'. No more being 'overweight'!

That said, I think I will need to re-evaluate as I lose weight. It has been so long since I was anywhere near a normal weight, that I have no idea what my body will look like. I am now approaching the lowest weight I got to (179) several years ago, when I was first having success on low-carb. Then Halloween happened, and I started a long struggle.

I was 140 in high school, and vaguely remember dieting to 157 in my early twenties, and feeling very pleased with how I looked, though still 'plump'.

So, I guess for me, my goal is still a work in progress. 154...unless I change my mind!

Thanks Cindy! I don't want to get down to 125. I was actually below that for my late teens, early twenties, and it's too thin. I'm at the point now, where I'm trying to balance my gut with my face. As I lose, I look older, and I certainly don't want that! 145 will most likely be as low as I go, but I make no guarantees.

I chose 126 to start with as that's the weight I was (well between 119-126) before I was ill and started piling on the weight but then decided 140 would probably be more realistic as I'm struggling losing at all at the moment.

Who knows.... Are we ever really happy with our bodies.. like some have already said it seems many of us call goal... maintain a while then want to drop further!

I've heard of that before too! I've never felt capable of getting that low though.

My face is starting to look more normal, even at over 40 lbs from goal, so I may be satisfied long before I reach 130. Idk, seems like when you've gotten lower than you thought possible, lower seems more achievable. Really can't say what my end goal will be at this point.

Yennie, I'm also 5'2" with a large frame. My wrist is 6 3/4" with no fat. I tend to have an hourglass figure with big boobs and a smaller waist but very muscular Mary Lou Retton thighs (anyone remember her?). About 7 years ago I got down to 135 doing LC and was pretty muscular but could still have lost another 10-15 lbs. 20 years ago I was 125 and looked good but wasn't skinny and I thought I could've been smaller. Given that it was only 7 yrs ago that I was 135 and still wanted to be lower even when I was 125, I picked 125 as my goal since I think getting lower might be unrealistic, but who knows. When I get down to 135 I will reevaluate to see if I still need to drop. Also, I'm only doing kettlebells and interval training like once a week and I also lift and carry heavy items for my catering job but I'm not hitting the gym doing 420 lbs on the leg press like I used to. I've decided to wait until I'm at goal before I start lifting heavy again. At that time I may end up being smaller and tighter but weigh more once I start lifting again.

I've never been within range for a normal BMI because of my large frame and muscle mass so I gave that up years ago.

Hi Yennie,

It sounds like we are built similarly! I'm 5'3" but definitely large framed, with a 7.25" wrist. I add muscle easily. I picked my goal based on the higher end of my BMI chart, because of my large frame, and also because it's the only time as an adult (in college) when I was at a weight that felt right ... not skinny but I didn't feel I needed to lose more.

BUT that was a long time ago, and I also think I will be feeling pretty great in the 150s. If I am the same as before, I'd be about a size 8-10 in the 150s, so I guess I'll have to see when I get there.

I did read that large framed people can add 10% to the BMI, and even within the chart a large framed person should shoot for the high end, roughly 23-25.

Thank you everyone for your replies & insight. I am glad I asked because I looked up the mobile testing labs & one will be in my area on Wednesday! I'm currently exchanging emails with the guy to get a time for body fat analysis. So I guess there is the potential that I will be answering my own question come Wednesday morning. I will share the experience & my results.

Each time, I'm anxious about how much of my LBM I've been able to maintain. It's especially worrisome for me currently, because I'm not allowed to exercise, and haven't been for several months. regardless, hydrostatic weighing is a great tool, and I'm glad you asked at the right time.

I chose my initial goal of 133 because that is what I weighed most of my life AND was easy to maintain, FOR ME. Then I tried hcg. With the hcg, I knew I could go lower because it was so easy. Once you get close to what you think you want to be, you will change your mind too. May not be for a while, but you will! Just as Carly and Dawn have reconsidered. It gets exciting as you close in on your first goal. I cannot for the results of your test too.
