Help! I'm Struggling

As some of you remember, I posted that I had stopped losing on my UD calories given by the calculator (2300). So I dropped down to 1800 which produced a little loss. Then I stopped losing at that calorie mark so I went back up to 2300. This has produced nothing but a constant gain/loss of 2-5 pounds.

So what do I do now? I'm so frustrated and I can't keep doing this. I have NO motivation left and I'm so discouraged.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear that, Karen I wonder how long did you stay at 1800 cal before you decided to go back to 2300. Also did you try to increase or decrease your DD calories?

What about a middle number between 1800 and 2300? 500 is a big jump. What are your DD calories? Have you thought of adjusting those up or down instead?

What do your DD's look like? Maybe time to lower them, and may be go even higher on you UD's. Or 2 UD's in a row. Seems like when I shake things up a little (sometimes unintentionally, and sometimes in a direction that losses wouldn't be expected) that's when the scale gets moving again.


From what I have read, if you keep on JUDDING the losses will come.

How long have you been stuck? I'm no expert with JUDDD, just 2+ months, but I've noticed I am not a constant daily looser. I loose in batches. I almost threw the towel in after 3 weeks of 2-3 lb bounces up and down and then a big woosh. Now I'm again sitting on the same number 2 weeks plus. I'm just waiting for that next woosh to happen. Just wondering if you stuck with it long enough for that to maybe occur?

I am the queen of slow loss, lol. I know there are others that maybe have lost less than I have in the same amount of time, but it sometimes feels like I'm standing still while everyone dashes to the finish line. So, I know how you feel. What I also know, but don't always care to acknowledge, is that JUDDD *will* work, even if it's S L O W. The truth is, there's no other diet where you only have to diet EOD, and the pay-off is worth it. For fast weight loss, PLUS deprivation, you can always pick another WOE. But I hope you will stick with it!

I am with Kissa word for word (as usual ). I was thinking of a middle number rather than that large of a difference for your UD cals. Also wondering what your DD numbers were like. I am able to have many more UD cals than the calculator allows me now, but that is because my DDs are really low. Please elaborate! We want to help!!!

I lost best when my DDs were as low as I could make them. I tried to keep DDs under 150 when possible. I hope some of the suggestions you get help out

Thank you all for your responses. Hopefully I can answer all questions at once...lol.

I've been on JUDDD for almost a year, so I've given it more than enough time. My DD's are under 500. I've tried going lower and it's almost impossible. My hunger hasn't seemed to have decreased on DD's. I've been on this up/down bounce for about 3 months. I've decreased UD's, increased UD's...nothing seems to work.

I would think that wide swing between the DD calories and UD calories would be sufficient for weight loss. I haven't tried a number between 1800 and 2300.

I just know that I cannot continue on this way. It would be nice to keep thinking that the loss will start up again, but I don't believe that, unless I find something that works. Months and months with no loss is just too much for me. I need to get this weight off for my health and I'm not expecting to lose 5 pounds a week, but for me to stay motivated, I have to see SOMETHING.

I don't want to be confusing, but I have a suggestion that is kind of opposite advice to the excellent suggestions given already. I'm giving it anyway, because what I've found out is that we're all different. You've lost a lot, and if nothing else is working you can try a maintenance break by increasing DDs. This could do one of two things: give your body a rest, after which it will probably give up the pounds better, or, possibly, you could discover, as I did, that you are one who loses better with higher DDs.

I found out by accident that higher DDs actually increased my rate of loss (which had slowed down a LOT for the previous few months). We often suggest around here something that works for many people: DDs as low as possible. For me, however (and YMMV), very low DDs had the opposite effect. On mostly 35% DDs I've really picked up the pace (5 pounds in the past 3 weeks, which is fast for me ... more than I've lost in any full month since December). I don't think everyone has this result, but I'm not the only one. (see this thread: Dumb question about DD) I do exercise regularly .... not sure how that figures in if at all. Just want to give you another option. I know from experience how frustrating it is to feel like you're doing everything right and the scale doesn't show it.

I'm dissatisfied because I have a LOT to lose and I'm not losing. I am not one of those people who can continue indefinitely on a plan where I am not seeing results. I cannot stay motivated that way.

I am 45 years old and both of my knees need to be replaced. Losing this weight will be one of the best things I can do for my joints. I am in pain every single day from my knees...every step I take is painful. I cannot continue down this path, on this plan, and not lose.

It may take experimentation to find the right number for you, but I can tell you what I'm doing: eating all my up day calories for my current weight, and then DDs around 35% on the JUDDD calculator. I allowed myself to go up to 50% on DDs, but really didn't need to ... 35% felt perfect. My up days are 2000 ... might be a good number for you, too, since you had been losing on 1800 for a good while and wanted to increase a bit? That way you'd be following Cindy (Kissa's) suggestion but also having slightly higher DDs. For me, my 2000 up day and 700 down day is an average of 1,350 which seems like a good level for someone of my size, and still has a good spread between UD/DD calories.

I can understand that. I didn't mean to sound insensitive. I think you should probably try Chris' suggestion of higher DDs and see how that works for you. Please keep us uipdated too!!

Karen, I'm so sorry you're feeling this frustration! It's not fair! And I totally understand your feelings. It's really, really hard to keep trying so hard for no apparent results.

I will tell you this. 15 year or so ago, I lost almost 100 pounds. 94 to be exact. I was doing LC then. Around the halfway point, I stalled. Just went up and down the same 5-10 pounds. For months. If I remember correctly, about 6 months! I stayed on LC, pretty strictly too. Looking back, I have NO idea how I kept it up. I guess I just didn't know what else to do, and I didn't want to gain it back. I believe, that my body was adjusting to the 50 pound (over 20%) loss, and just stabilize there. Then all of a sudden I started losing again. I started walking almost every morning and then the losses really picked up.

I'm kind of going through a similar thing now. Last month, no losses. I went up and down again 10 pounds, but ended exactly where I started. This time, I've lost 112 pounds (35%), so intellectually I realize it probably needs to rest, evaluate and stabilize. Emotionally, I want to keep losing at a decent pace and it makes me crazy to go over the same ground over and over again. I so feel what you're feeling.

I keep telling myself, "don't give up, don't quit and start gaining again - NOT AN OPTION!" I know, I mean really know deep in my heart, that if I keep doing JUDDD, the losses will start again. I just have to keep the faith. (Any of you are perfectly welcome to toss that one back at me anytime - often lately - I am getting frustrated and worrying about slow or no losses - in fact, PLEASE DO!)

Will you join me in just having faith, and keeping on working this WOE? We can be each other's support. You have lost an amazing amount of weight - not just the 60 pounds recently. Your body may very well be taking a breather and trying to make adjustments. You should be so proud of what you've accomplished! And I know we can both continue on and lose the rest of what we need/want to.

I also agree with the others, that shaking it up can really help get things moving. Like Christina, I've done a maintenance break recently too, with good results. Sometimes an UUAD will get things moving. Maybe super low DDs with higher UDs for awhile. We just have to try stuff and see.

Sorry for the novel! I just so don't want you to give up. You have done an amazing thing in your losses so far! I'm happy and proud of you just looking at those numbers. What do you say?

Thank you so much...and I deeply appreciate the novel. Sometimes it helps to just hear someone say "it'll be ok". I sooo don't want to give up and gain back what I worked so hard to lose.

Karen, thank you for sharing your heart and your struggles with us. We all benefit greatly by listening to each other and helping one another.

You have done an amazing job with what you have already accomplished! No doubt it took a great deal of disciplined action to get here.

I like Carly's suggestion of three weeks as a really good trial. Another plus is that even if you decide the higher DDs aren't your thing, it could still "reboot" your system in case you decide you want to drop down again after that. I noticed within a few days that something new was happening, so I hope this happens for you. Whatever the case, plateaus are super annoying, even though they seem to happen to just about everybody. You've already had such amazing success and there is more to come ...the key thing is not to give back any significant ground while this plateau tests your resolve! (And boy, do they plateaus ever test our resolve .... )

Another great thing about the higher DDs is that they feel easy after you've done 500 cals or fewer, so it will give you a bit of a break. Let us know how it's going for you?

I think you have a good plan there, give it a go and see how you feel.

Any point in my mentioning that 4,500 mg of glucosamine, along with JUDDD, has eased my knee pain no end. I understand, of course, that I am at goal so my knees aren't under pressure. But I think everything helps. I also eat 'Dirt' (Diatomaceous Earth).

Good posts above. Something that has crossed my mind because some things seem similar - what would be the etiquette for asking Leo41 for input as she lost her last 100lbs on JUDDD and seems to have had a number of useful exchanges with Dr Johnson?

Kissa - I take Osteo Bi-Flex which doesn't seem to help. But I keep taking it because I have it and don't want to waste it. I also take Fish Oil. I'm not sure of the amount of Glucoasmine in Osteo Bi-Flex though.

Can I suggest something just kinda wacky.....switch your days around. If today is a UD, do an UD today AND tomorrow then do a DD on sat. and go from there rotating again. When I get stuck I found that if I mix it up like that I start to lose again. Our bodies kinda get used to what we are doing then we have to shake it up with a hey look still doing it thing. When I start messing with UD/DD calories I get hungry and start to sway from the plan. But just rearranging the days helps! You will find that you wont be hungry switching rotations like that too, atleast I never was. I have had to switch rotation like that 3 different times now in a year and a half. But once I do the losses start again. I am a slow loser too, so I understand the frustrations. Hugs to you!!
