I Bought Carrots!

Yes, you heard it right, carrots!

Anybody else experienced this? It's about six weeks in and I finally got up the courage to buy carrots. That's how low carb messed with my mind. I would eat a 3-minute chocolate cake (670 calories) and feel fine about it, but I was scared of carrots (35 calories in 3 oz)!

There are reasons this woe works!

Enjoy your carrots.

Different things work for different people but sometimes you realise how complicated and messed up the public discussion of food has become.

Another low cal treat is Star Fruit! Probably a low carb no-no, but a medium Star Fruit is about 38 calories!

There is nothing wrong with having carrots while on a low carb woe. That's just public ignorance getting the best of us telling us what THEY thing we can't and shouldn't have. You'd be surprised the things people tell me that I "can't eat" because I'm "low carb" when they have no clue about it....

Enjoy your carrots. I personally don't care for long carrots anymore, I prefer the sweeter and more watery baby carrots , though I will put regular carrot slices in a soup or stew recipe sometimes for color.

Me, too. I got baby carrots. I know you can have the carrots on low carb, it's just the way I interpreted it. I became very carb phobic except for the low carb desserts. I'd let myself indulge and often would get into trouble because of overdoing it.

I think many people feel this way. That is the way I became doing LC. Mention carrots on the main board and see what happens? It has been a long time but I will never forget the reaction I got mentioning eating grapefruit on the main board.

There are many interpretations of LC and many plans but it is so easy to become so afraid of carbs that we obsess.

Way to go on buying carrots. Believe it or not, I am allergic to carrots so I won't be buying any until my son is coming to visit. But I could.

Is it the entire carrot family of umbelliferae that is a problem, Adi? Or just raw items (Oral Allergy Syndrome)? (Ignore this if intrusive - I know you like carrot cake so wondered if you're OK with tiny amounts or if it's just raw carrot that is the problem.)

I took desensitizing shots for 2 years for my food allergies so I can eat small amounts every once in awhile without too much distress. I combine two allergies in one for the carrot cake but then the wheat is a worse allergy. I probably indulge once a month. I CANNOT resist the carrot cake when it is sitting in the breakroom. But I cut my one piece and hope the rest is eaten quickly. Someone here posted a wheat free carrot cake made with almond flour which I made and it was DELICIOUS but probably had 6 zillion calories per serving. And I don't have any more almond flour which is probably a good thing.

I am only allergic to 6 foods - carrots, beets, turnips, squash, wheat, and mushrooms. I never touch mushrooms regardless since they used to be my worst for obvious reactions. My reaction is throwing up for hours on end if I get too much of an allergy food. Haven't had that happen though since taking the shots. BUT I don't eat large quantities or often of those 6 foods.

I can totally relate! I went years w/o eating carrots, and honestly didn't miss them too much since before LC I was eating LF and carrots were a mainstay. Now a handful of baby carrots are a real DD treat!

For me this year, watermelon is going to be my epiphany food. I haven't bought any yet, but I love love love it and now I can have it!

Yikes Adi that sounds pretty awful! How lucky you were able to figure out what foods were causing the reaction so that you could avoid them.
No one in our house has food allergies, thankfully, although we are trying a bit of an elimination diet (just dairy so far) with the monkey to try to figure out his tummy troubles. That's a tough one since the kid drinks milk like a fish and loves cheese & his dad keeps telling him he can have ice cream. <grrrr> But we got him lactose free milk & we'll go from there.
Anyway, glad you can enjoy your carrot cake and know what foods to avoid!!

Yennie - I had some serious respiratory issues and my doctor sent me for allergy testing. That is the only reason I had any idea I had food allergies. I was told the throwing up was a nervous stomach. Dr. Bone (her real name) helped me out tremendously. After getting off all of my known allergies and taking shots for 2 years, and after being told I would never have children, I had my one and only child at age 40. So I credit Dr. Bone for my son in a round about way. Food allergies can be real interesting. I got my sickest when I combine wheat and mushrooms. I kept a food diary for years to see if I could figure out what was causing me to have those throwing up spells. (this was before my allergy tests). I can tolerate zucchini but not yellow squash. Bummer since I love yellow squash.

Me too, I LOVE watermelon and this summer I am going to indulge. In fact I looking forward to so many fruits I was restricting last summer due to atkins.

I love carrots too, especially eaten raw.

I've been enjoying fresh cherries. You can eat quite a bit for 8 oz. (74 calories). I occasionally eat carrots, but they inevitably go bad before I can finish a bag. What I enjoy that isn't LC is cupcakes.

Cupcakes! Love it! Today I bought shortbreads, animal crackers and cinamon twists for my next up days. I get 34 animal crackers for 280 calories!!!

YES! I remember this, exactly.

Wait till you have... an APPLE!!!! LOL

3oz of baby carrots is about 30 cal. 1 apple (or an asian pear, which I like better) is round about 100 I believe.

And sometimes.... I use onions and tomatoes LIBERALLY!!!
the shock! The horror!!!!

Enjoy your new liberty!!!

In additional news...

Slowsure-- my husband is allergic/sensitive to tomatoes and eggplants. So we figure, all nightshades. But, not potatoes. Sometimes to peppers. Weird eh?
Not as bad as Adi, but similar-- vomiting and other "gastric distress" shall we say, and an immediate and massive headache. NOT fun. So, while it won't kill him (i.e. no need for epipen, it's not an anaphalactic reaction) it will ruin the night for sure.

Cindy-- omg. I love cherries. Finishing up the first bag of the season. And Marika-- I can eat a whole (small, seedless) watermelon, i swear.

Last year, enjoying JUDDD, I had a good 1/2 a watermelon. I then had to PEE every hour, all night.
TOTALLY forgot about their diuretic properties before I indulged

And given how much I love them, I can't say I won't make the same mistake again!

I think lots of watermelon must be good for you but try to eat it early so you can sleep without getting up all night.

LOL!!!! This thread has me cracking up.

I agree, the HORROR!!!! We used to buy BATCHES of baby carrots all the time...for my pugs. You can't even say the word carrot without them flipping out and running in excited circles. My poor fat doggies, this is their favorite treat. And I remember giving them to them and actually craving them and wishing I could eat one. (I was strict LC 20gm Atkins induction everytime I did it). Ugh, I know general LC eating makes me feel better and is better for me, but, that kind of thinking is just insane. I mean, who craves a baby carrot and then forces them not to indulge!
