Ground Kangaroo . . . what to do?

Like that brilliant rhyme?

Okay, I'm calling all you adventurous eaters. I picked up some ground kangaroo yesterday, and am planning to make it tomorrow. Does anyone have any good ideas? I'm thinking roo-burgers for the initial run, just to see how the flavor compares to beef.

What has been your experience?

They also had wild boar, venison, and bison at the new Sprouts Market. I've had bison (and liked it) but haven't tried wild boar or venison. Those will be purchased next time I'm out that way.

I haven't had kangaroo but my mom has, I'll ask her.
Boar & venison are both fantastic. Venison can be a bit gamey though so if you're not into that then you may not care for it. In wild game, the taste depends a lot on where the animal has been feeding - there is absolutely nothing like hunting in an alfalfa field!! YUM!!!

I've never tried it- but remember reading somewhere that it's dry- so I
would probably make it like a 50-50 burger- although that would effectively
mask the 'roo flavor... hmmm now I don't know what to tell you.

I have absolutely no advice, but I'm anxiously awaiting the results and your reviews. I haven't noticed interesting meats at my Sprouts, but maybe I haven't been looking hard enough. Are they expensive?

$7.49/pound. I think the boar, venison, elk, and bison were all similarly priced.

Never had kangaroo, but we eat venison all the time. Hubby and son are hunters! The venison if you get it you will need to soak in apple juice or italian dressing to remove the gamey taste. If I am low on time, I boil the venison with italian seasoning or green peppers and onion on the stove top.

I have also had elk and its yummy!!! Oh and boar, hubby went on a boar hunt once. Best pork we ever had!! I think I had bison before...I cant remember for sure.....we eat so many hunted things its hard to tell lol!! We had wild turkey on the grill over the weekend, it was Yum-O!!! Wrapped in bacon and slowly smoked!!!

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure the package was a whole pound. Maybe it was a 1/2 pound.

Bambi is cute too, and so is Bessie the cow. However, I will eat both, and would probably eat Roo. They are overpopulated and wouldn't fare well if they weren't hunted.

Did you see Life of Pi? After watching the hyena on that movie, I'd eat their asses up! Wouldn't feel a bit bad about it.

Hehe, I agree about the hyena!

DH just texted and said he's going to make bacon cheese roo-burgers and sweet potato fries for dinner, so I'll let you all know how they come out. Will save the chicken I was planning to have for tomorrow night instead.

Yes, I did. That poor oragantang/money (I don't know how to spell it and not going to look it up!). I want to change one of my cat's names to Richard Parker.

I don't think hyena meat would be very appetizing.

Never had kangaroo...
But love venison! I pray for a freezer full of venison each November... So I won't have to buy beef!

My FIL used to raise Beefalo... Much leaner than straight beef, but tougher because of it. Got used to it though, and had major sticker shock when he sold the farm and I had to start buying my meat at the store!

I had a steak sandwich and it was great. We were in Cairns at the time and had just spent the day out on the Great Barrier Reef. Stopped in at a little sandwich shop for a quick dinner and it was listed on the menu as 'Sirloin Steak Sandwich'. Ha. It was Kangaroo meat - very good, though -- I couldn't tell a difference from regular beef.

(Thinking seriously about JUDDD for maintenance if I ever reach goal, so I lurk on the forum a lot lol -- love reading how great this WOE is working).

The burgers were good. They were a little sweeter than beef, but similar texture and the flavor was very mild. Kangaroo meat is very lean, so it could be a good DD option. 4 oz was only 110 calories. I also read it's a great source of CLA for those of you trying to get more of that. I'd love to find some kangaroo steaks.

We didn't tell Keira what it was until after dinner. She knew we bought kangaroo meat, so it's not like we "hid" it from her. I asked her how she liked the burger, and she said it was good. Then when she figured out it was kangaroo, she said it tasted weird. She had eaten the whole thing, so I guess it wasn't that weird.

I am too late to the party, but I have eaten it in OZ on a number of occasions as steak and as burgers. A bit like Kiera, I'd never have known if I hadn't read the menu.

I love these interesting meats, ostrich, water buffalo, wild boar and venison. Had reindeer last week in Finland. All good and often very healthy.

In Africa I did crocodile and some other weird stuff, oddest of all was bat pate in the Seychelles.

When cooking, treat venison and a lot of wild game like lean pork. Low heat! Otherwise you get tough meat, which no one wants to eat. Cannot be handled like beef, the protein structure doesn't react that way. My family eats elk weekly. They all love game above any other meat source.

I loved Emu the few times I've eaten it, at a restaurant. I think it is very lean/low calorie too. It tasted like a juicy steak.

Wish we had a market that sold different meats like that. Sounds so good!! I think the closest thing we have is an international market in Ohio (Dayton maybe?) called Jungle Jim's that I have been DYING to go back to for a long time. They have an aisle full of nothing but different types of hot sauce, lol

Yeah, and they have an old-timey fire engine suspended from the ceiling over that aisle!

(It's just north of Cincy, in Fairfield. I understand they've opened a 2nd location in Eastgate.
We've never been to that one. Super-fun place to shop!)

ETA: I love their bathroom doors! I'm going to see if I can find a picture!
