I don't think I'd use them.

Do you guys know how it works and calculates calories? I know other ones will use sweat production and/or heart rate to calculate how many calories are burned. Does the Fitbit just take your presumed steps and extrapolate? I tried looking on their website but I couldn't find info on how it worked.
I'd like something that will take into account things like yoga, horseback riding, cycling and weight lifting. All activities that elevate heart rate but you're not taking steps, per se.

I'm not sure. You have to input your weight and height so I guess they have some kind of formula to calculate it. On the website I think there is a section where you can input additional activity but I would have to look again. I don't think I'm going to focus on calories right now since I'm just hoping to get in a certain amount of steps each day (I am participating in a Pedometer Challenge).

From the Fitbit website help section:

Your tracker and Dashboard show an estimated number of calories burned for that day based on your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), which we calculate using the height, weight, age, and gender information you provided us with when you set up your Fitbit account.

When you sync your tracker, Fitbit replaces your estimated calorie burn with your tracker's data. If you manually log activities, the calories burned by doing those will be taken into account as well.

When you haven't synced your device or logged any activities, Fitbit tries to guess how many calories you have burned if you got out of bed, got dressed, went to your day job, came home, and did nothing much more than walk to your car.

Once you start logging activities, Fitbit stops estimating and uses the data you've provided instead. The more you wear your tracker, the more accurate your calorie burn data will be.

Basically just a big guesstimation.......

Somehow I missed that on their website but thank you.
Yah, I mean, I can calculate my BMR and then use a website tracker for inputting activities. My calorie tracker I use online & on my phone has the ability to also track exercise so...
My friend has a BodyBug and I think that one actually takes physical measurements of your body while you go on about your day to calculate calories burned.
Thanks guys! Still be interested in what you think of it but, for now, I have enough gadgets that tell me how far I'm walking. Thanks!!!

My birthday is next month and I may be asking for a fitbit. I want the one that does sleep. I think it would be intersting with the sleepwalking and all. If DW doesn't wake up I have no way to know if I got up or not.

The one I got was the Zip and it was 59.99 from the pedometer usa website. I was going a cheaper one but hubby saw that it was more like a "gadget" and since he loves those kinds of things he thought I should have the more expensive one (I bet he will want to play on their site LOL).

I like the One since it does sleep which is pretty important to me.

Yes, I saw that one and know someone who has it but she doesn't use that feature. These types of things are so amazing to me! It's so small but does so much.
