coconut oil or coconut milk?

Which product(coconut oil or coconut milk) is used in your morning coffee?
What else can you use these products for?

Hi Jeanne,

Coconut milk can be used as a replacement for normal cow's milk; it is versatile and delicious. I use it extensively as a replacement for normal dairy milk.

Coconut oil is also very versatile, and is an excellent choice for cooking as it does not break down under heat as quickly as olive oil does. Not only can it be used as a choice for most saute or fry recipes, but it is also good in baked goods. It makes a killer topping for popcorn on UP days.

Coconut oil is also excellent for your skin and can be mixed with other products or used by itself.

Can you tell, I use it ALOT.

Enjoy experimenting!!!

Kimmie

Thanks Kimmie,
can I find coconut oil at Walmart? I will be stopping there today and if so where would I find it in the store?

Yes, CO is available at Wal-Mart. I have been using the So Delicious Coconut Cream in my coffee and it is an excellent replacement for cream sans fat/cals. Also, if you love greek yogurt but can't handle the dairy, So Delicious makes wonderful cultured coconut milk products that taste quite close to the dairy version.

Here the Walmarts started carrying Nutiva (an excellent brand) organic coconut oil, but they stopped! I couldn't understand it because they were definitely selling it well. So I wouldn't hold out much hope. I pretty much have to go to the healthy-foods grocery to find it. The high-priced grocery here does carry a "coconut oi" but it is very poor quality and I don't think it's good for eating, really (maybe cosmetic).

I would add to Kimmie's post that coconut milk is good in smoothies, coconut oil good as a butter substitute for my oatmeal, or even as a spread.

You can get LuAnna coconut oil at WalMart in the section with Crisco. It is in a white jar with red and blue labeling. It is good to use for cooking or if you do not care for the flavor of coconut in the virgin products but it is a processed product.

You should also be able to buy virgin coconut oil at Walmart as well.

I actually use both, for different purposes.

Coconut oil has many health benefits. Be sure to google it and find out how awesome it is!

Whitlin, I was able to find Spectrum EVCO at Wal-Mart. This surprised me. I only use the LuAnna for cooking but for my daily coffee or coconut in smoothie, the EVCO is my fav.

Yes. I will have to do research on whether using LuAnna in the hair would be as beneficial? I have yet to try this. My mother uses the Nutiva on her skin and especially her feet.

Yes, it is the same. I have a gigantic jar of Nutiva (I think that's the brand) I rotate between my kitchen & bathroom. <-- ok, that sounded gross. Please be assured I'm very sanitary!
Anyway, I haven't used coconut milk but I use EVCO for cooking, smoothies, coffee, skin after shower, feet callouses. I haven't been brave enough to use it in baking yet because I'm still trying out specific red velvet recipes & don't want to change anything.
CO is not available at the Walmarts here. Water & milk are. I'm guessing there is quite a bit of regional variation.
I had to go to the co-op to get it.

I'd also like to recommend coconut butter or coconut manna (same thing, but different brands). It's delicious! I like it on baked sweet potatoes or toast.

I would not recommend using coconut butter for cooking or skin, but only because it's so expensive! However, it is delicious!!! I use it as a spread or straight from the jar.

Coconut milk has carbs. Coconut oil (CO)is fat, therefore only CO should be used in bullet-proof coffee.

Be aware that cheap CO is usually hydrogenated, therefore not healthy to eat - probably ok for hair. Buy virgin CO for eating!

Don't forget oil-pulling!

If you don't know what OP is, do an internet search. When reading, just substitute CO for the other oils discussed (or try the other oils).

Just got back from Walmart and only found one brand (LuAnna) did not buy it though. I want to make sure to get the right one. I will see where I can find the Nutiva brand or something like it.Would Amazon carry one? If so what am I looking for on the label to be able to use it on my hair, skin and in the kitchen?

Yes, you can't use the name of that site, we are not allowed. Look for Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil or you may find a better deal on Spectrum Coconut Oil, Refined, Organic.

I buy the coconut oil from Trader Joe's. I love it. Its good quality and very affordable. $5.99 for a 16 oz jar. I use it for all kinds of things....in my coffee, stir frying, in my eggs, etc. I also slather it all over me, really helps the dry skin. I have a jar in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and i put some in a small jar and carry it in my purse.

If you don't have a store that carries a good brand you can order it here from Netrition.

I buy my nutiva virgin organic coconut oil from amazon. I also buy different brands of organic virgin coconut oil from Trader Joe's, Vitamin Shoppe, and other stores, but amazon has the best price.

I use it for soooooo much. I keep a container in the kitchen and a container in the bedroom. I use it on my skin, hair, and I have a small container with a bit of tea tree oil mixed in that I use as an antibacterial salve. It works great. I cook with it often, and use it for bulletproof tea as well.

Alright folks, I'm going out on a limb here, and I will try not to blush, but coconut oil makes a great personal lubricant, for both men and women of all ages. (Know what I mean, jelly bean?)

It's safe, and antifungal. I much prefer it over commercial lubricants. Hope this is not offensive to anyone.

I got my virgin CO at TJ's. Love it. I also have the LuAnn for cooking things that don't do well with coconut flavor. It's good, flavorless and odorless.

Coconut butter is actually pretty sweet, at least the kind I had was. It's absolutely delicious eaten straight off the spoon.

Bi-Lo grocery store carries Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil. I looked and they stop just short of Fla. I would think any high-end grocery chain in your area would probably carry it though.

The label probably won't say for body, cooking & skin. You can get cosmetic grade CO, I have a big bucket of it I use when I make soap. But its honestly not that much cheaper than the food grade so I just use that for everything day-to-day.
I actually kinda like smelling the faint coconut on my skin when I use it for a moisturizer. Reminds me of Hawaii.
My son is currently in possession of a coconut my dad mailed him from Hawaii a few weeks back. I wanted to open it and drink the water but he's not having it. He sleeps with it, among other things. One of the cartoons he likes to watch (when we let him) is "Jake & the Neverland Pirates" on Disney Junior, so my son fancies himself quite the coconut expert. And is very happy carrying the blasted thing around all the time.
See - quite a versatile thing! Oil, milk, water, butter...and child's plaything!!

That is too cute! Don't you dare drill a hole in his new friend! Has he named it?

I too love the very slight coconutty smell when I use it on my skin. I also use it as a hot oil treatment on my hair, and even use the tiniest bit scrunched into the ends of my hair when they're looking/feeling dry. Such a versatile product!
