So I finally caved

and ordered the book Brain Over Binge. I have to do something about this problem of mine. I have to gain some type of control over my eating. I do well for so long then BAM! I go into a binge and have to force myself to stop. JUDDD helps to alot, LC helps alot too, ptero helps too, but I still feel out of control.

I should look into this as well. I know some of the reasons I'm overweight...where some of my food issues stem from. (Hello, mommy issues anyone?) But sometimes I think, you know, I'm a reasonably active person who doesn't really eat a bunch of junk...except for those binges. And they can go for days. I seriously have times where I think I can't ever get full.
I wonder if a leptin reset would help?
Sorry - "thinking" out loud.
Please share your thoughts after reading and let us know if you think this would be a valuable tool in the battle of the bulge. I am SO DETERMINED to keep it off this time. But then, I have been determined before and...

I was in tears within the first couple of chapters which spurred me to speak to my doctor who's referred me to a specialist clinic for depression & binge eating.

I slept last night better than I have in months, feel like now I've spoken to someone I know I can beat this.

I wonder if some of us really don't have an "off" switch? I know I don't. I'm not talking about emotional binging here (that a whole 'nother story!), but just appetite in general. I am hardly EVER full, no matter how much I eat. I seem to remember being like this since high school......I could always eat more than my boyfriends and still not feel full in the least.

I have such difficulty with binge eating. Many days of eating until I honestly can't eat anymore and sleep it off.

I read brain over binge about a year ago, and I really enjoyed it because it was very relate-able. I tried to implement just not giving into the urge. Although the only thing was is the author is thin and she didn't need to lose any weight.
I found that as long as I still needed to lose weight - I was dieting. And dieting + trying to recover from binge eating are never a good combination.

I'm going to read it again this weekend.

I have recently ordered Brain over Binge thanks to DaSHMith. I haven't received it yet but keeping fingers crossed.

I too don't think I have a shut off button. I literally can eat until I make myself ill. Having said that I am perfect with restriction diets. On JUDDD I easily do my DD's even if I become starving I won't mess up but it is the UD's that I can get out of control. I am currently doing very low carb JUDDD so don't have a problem (again very restrictive ) but the minute I start introducing carbs is when I can lose the plot.

I would love to eat like a normal person and not be all or nothing so hopefully the book will help. Good luck Demonica and let us know how you get on and what you think of it.

Let us know any good tips you learn and if you like the book! I know what you mean. Some UD's I feel like a thouroughbred horse outta the gate headed to the kitchen. It's like the alarm goes off and BOOM! I'm off to the fridge. lol I have been doing better though adding an eating window. It seems to help me stay in control of myself a little better.

You really should Deedee, it's frightening in a way because you can relate so well to wat she's saying and I certainly felt a lot of mixed emotions but I know it's put me on the right track for recovery x

Gina, have you found it's actually helped you in your day to day eating? Sometimes I think one of the reasons I love JUDDD is because it allows me to embrace my natural inclination towards eating a lot/not eating anything.

I've not finished the book as of yet but I have noticed since I've been doing JUDDD that because on my UD's I am not restricted that seems to help. The book has made me evaluate my relationship with food certainly and there's been a couple of occasions today where I could have run riot and binged but in my head i stepped outside of myself and 'chose' not too x

A friend of mine has weekly Overeaters Anonymous meetings in her home.
She was just telling me how they are working on separating out trigger events/behaviors and formulating responses to train into themselves instead of starting a binge.
Really has me thinking about it, and the terrible thing is, a couple of the things I have examined in myself made me shy away with a "not giving that up" response. WOW. there is always more self work to do. I think everyone has the possibility of not having an off switch depending on the situation. It is really a job to continue the mindfulness process.

This is so true. I've learned a lot about my relationship with food on DD's, honestly. There are some where I am having a bad day or angry about something, and my instinct is to turn to food. Since I can't, I have to find some other way to cope.

I'm one of those folks whose ED got triggered by JUDDD. I love JUDDD and it is a great way to lose weight, and BOB is a really really helpful book, but for some of us, any deprivation at all triggers binge behaviors. I have finally figured out a WOE that helps me lose weight without cravings and binges, but it had to be deprivation free, or else I am in trouble.

Ok, I was reading some reviews on this book and they said its for people dealing with bulimia?

Those that have read it can u comment on that? Maybe I'm confused what binge eating is?

The girl who's written it has Bulimia Nervosa but it covers binge eating in general, it really is worth a read!

The author of the book had bulimia in the sense that she would binge eat and then work out for hours the next day for "damage control". This way she would be able to maintain her weight (she was always thin).

The book was a good read, but in the end I binge eat and don't even have a chance to do damage control . I just keep binge eating-- ie. gaining tons of weight in a small period of time.

I think this book is great to know that there are others out there and would definitely work for those who just want to stop binge eating and maintain a healthy weight. But I found it was very hard to incorporate while trying to lose weight.
I think the tactic she uses to stop her binge eating by ignoring the urge doesn't really work for me. If she was overweight and then she stopped binge eating and lost weight-- I think it would be different.
Thats just my personal opinion, but I know that there are many others who have benefited greatly from this book!

I also read the diet cure, only thing I really got from that was taking chromium and L-glutamine for sugar-carb cravings (which is great!!)

I usually stay low carb on JUDDD, but yesterday was a bust. My DD's are usually not a problem (except for yesterday), it's my UD's I have a problem with. As soon as I start roaming the kitchen, I'm in trouble. And I don't know how to control it. This book will help.

I couldn't have said that better myself. Ravenous carb coyote!! I only did (less than) OK on low carb - I didn't see the pounds melting off the way so many low-carbers do so for me it was just so frustrating.. so when I got disappointed and fed up with denying myself, I'd go coyote with sugar.

Does the book deal with emotional eating? that is my issue. Any form of stress or depression and I'm a goner.

Honestly JUDDD is the first woe of that i've ever felt that I was in control. I don't know exactly how it works (that's why we call it the JUDDD magic) but it does. Even on my UD I have been finding it easier to turn to the healthy options or to make the right choices. And reading these boards has made me better able to deal with the fact that I am just a slow loser, no matter WHICH woe I choose. blah.

Right now I'm going to go coyote on some pickles.

I've long been an advocate of Rational Recovery and Jack Trimpey's work...which, BTW, is all available free online, the major principles anyway. I own all his books, read them probably 15 years ago.

Also look into Aaron T Beck, the foremost voice in cognitive therapy, upon which the tenets of RR are based. A lot of free info there, too. Also have a couple of his books.

There was a book in the Rational recovery series called "Feast Beast", which applied the RR tecniiques to compulsive eating. I bought it maybe 10 years ago, but found it kind of annoying to read, in that it ran towards the pop-culture buzzword requirement...then there is the obvious difference that we do have to eat, other addictions can be left behind.

I'm rambling on...as I always do...anyway, my point is these two authors have all the same info available online, free, and in depth. Reading/studying both can be very helpful in producing a mind-shift and making one aware of the "bicameral mind".

That said, I'm still a fat alcoholic

I guess I should have mentioned that Jack Trimpey's work is what Brain over Binge is based on, and Jack Trimpey's work is based on AAron Beck's. I'm not awake yet....

I really really hope the book helps you. There are many people who have been helped by it. I am not trying to discouraged you but here is my story:
I am binger and have read the BOB book. While I was reading I was excited, thinking I finally found the answer. I was crying while reading the book as I could identify with the author on many levels. While I don't purge or over exercise to burn the calories, I do binge and gain few pounds as a result. So last time when the binging monster arrived I tried to put into practice the ideas from the book. I could not do it! There was no negotiating with the primitive brain. I had to have to carbs right now like a drug. I was eating till my body could not take it anymore. So I was kind of disappointed that the book did not work for me. I can see it working when I want to over-eat but not when I am binging. The desire to binge is too strong to negotiate with it.

Right now I have been binge free for past 7 days. All I did was to go very low on carbs and from one day where I was eating over 4000 cal and god knows how many carbs to the next day eating virtually zero carbs, I lost desire to binge completely. It was like day and night. I am still at almost zero carbs but I will add them in eventually. I know it has only been 7 days so I can't tell if this the answer but I do know eating more than 60 gr of carbs a day is risky for me at this point.

I guess that's why i didn't care for the BOB book, I can tell plenty of my own horror stories, like the watermelon and dextromethorphan diet, or my laxative phase...and it is crazy hard to separate oneself from the "animal" part of the brain, that's what gurus and priests and yogis do. That needs to be the focus, and we all seem to be able to do it for a while, it's very hard to maintain.

When I read through these posts,over and over again I hear people saying that they have a bizarre body image, or they just can't stop eating even though they are physically full, or they "crave" foods that are just plain bad for their bodies.

There is a distinct mind/body disconnect here...it is kinda ludicrous, to think of your mind and body being so at odds

Marika, (cool name BTW) that is my experience too, low carb was the only way i could lose weight once i hit 30. when i was younger, i would just starve...lose the weight, eat normally, gain it back, starve, etc.,etc., ad nauseam...on low carb i could actually eat and lose at the same time!

What I got from BOB is that you have a choice. You can be a victim and blame some external force, or you can take responsibility. Simple!
But not necessarily easy!!

If eating carbs triggered binge behavior, it may have been from unstable blood sugar. The hunger that comes from blood sugar rising and then crashing can be difficult to ignore, because your brain is sending urgent messages saying feed me now! even though you may have eaten an hour before.

I haven't read BoB but low carb is one of the tools I use to avoid bingeing.

I do low carb 99.9% of the time, and I still binge on low carb stuff. Pork rinds, nuts, cheese, it doesn't matter.

I tried to use the philosophy behind the book The Easy Way to Quit Smoking and apply it to quiting binging. It worked WONDERS for quiting smoking! In fact, it was the ONLY thing that worked for me. I may re-read the book but apply the principal toward binge eating instead of smoking.
