''Diet'' food

So newbie here and I was atkins. atkins is all about the good fats.
olive oil, butter, lots of cheese, full fat mayo

now I am basically calorie counting on JUDDD. I realized I have to track the UP days as much as I have to be good on the Down day.

I checked my butter going on the veg tonight. 1 tablespoon is 100 calories.

So I am thinking---who is using things like I can't believe its not butter and other low calorie foods/condiments in their meals?

Are you trying to cut calories with 'diet' type foods or are you just limiting the real foods on an UP day?

Like--I would love 2 tablespoons of butter on my veg tonight but I don't want to give up 100 cals. to do that :)

So wondering how people are preparing their foods and what they use mostly?

Trying to figure out how to attack my meal prep on JUDDD.

taghag 05-06-2013 07:40 AM

I would use as little butter if any at all on a DD. I eat a lot of vegetables on DD so I use coconut oil or olive oil sparingly in prep. I don't count those calories and I have not seen any big bounces either.

Spices are my friend! :)

Demonica 05-06-2013 08:05 AM

I don't use "diet" foods. I just use less of butter and oils on my DD's, if any. Like instead of a whole tbsp of butter in my BPC on DD's, I use 1/2 tbsp. Or instead of a whole tbsp of mayo on my tuna or HB egg, I use 1/2 tbsp.

Flossyliz 05-06-2013 08:15 AM

Real food for me too! I track the cals in everything.

ravenrose 05-06-2013 08:25 AM

just out of curiosity, are you confusing tablespoons and teaspoons? 2 tablespoons is a LOT of butter. hard to even get that to stay put as a sauce on vegetables.

Trigger828 05-06-2013 08:33 AM

I just came off atkins. 2 tablespoons is not alot of butter LOL

I guess I have to adapt back now. I would use things like butter to up my calorie count to hit my amt. for the day. I would use 2 tablespoons on alot of broccoli, cauli, and of course some would end up at the bottom of the bowl. Not like I ate the whole 2 tablespoons actually....but yea, 2 tblesp is not alot for me to even think about eating.

oh man does that make me sound like a monster piglet? yikes

Hi Trigger 828, welcome to JUDDD. Glad to have you with us. I too came from a l.c. (keto) WOE and the transition to counting calories takes a small adjustment at first, but really is a welcome change, especially on updays, smile!

Check out JUDDDs DD recipe thread or food porn thread for great ideas for filling, lower calorie meals.

My new favorite kitchen device is a digital scale that measures ounces and grams. I measure my protein and veg on the scale and although I never measured in grams before, its now my favorite way to weigh smaller portions.

I also bought a "Misto" because I got tired of paying so much for cooking spray. I fill the Misto up with EVOO or oil and spray my pans and even my salads. It works great! You can even fill it with lemon juice, etc.

On DDs you can puree cottage cheese, add powdered Ranch Dressing, and a bit of buttermilk and make oil free dressing. It's quite good.

On up days, I like to cook from websites like Hungry Girl or Skinny Taste or Vegan websites. I too like to use healthy fats. I stick to coconut oil, EVOO and butter. The other day I made an unbelievably good chocolate cake using avocado as the healthy fat.

Chef Ramsay's You Tube videos are great - check out his soups. I love his watercress soups or broccoli soups. They are thick, and filling and don't rely on chicken broth - they have the clean natural taste of the vegetable only.

When he calls for a "knob" of butter, I just use about 1/2 tsp. of butter or a drizzle of olive oil at the end to dress the soup. If they call for cheese, I use a small crumble of gorgonzola (strong) or grated parmesan.

Enjoy and good luck to you.

Trigger828 05-06-2013 09:15 AM

LOL true

when on atkins I would use lots of butter etc. and I wondered how people would conceive that. Look at that chubby gal eating that butter. She doesn't need it :)

even writing 2 tablespoons of butter 'reads like alot'.

Trigger828 05-06-2013 09:17 AM

NevertoLate

thanks. that post helped me alot. lets me think more about how to eat on JUDDD.
always liked Chef R so I will go check out the soups!

Sounds like everyone is heading toward real fresh foods and not using diet stuff in place of that.

Never Too Late 05-06-2013 09:48 AM

Many of us on the forum do enjoy diet foods. Among some of my favorites - Hershey's SF chocolate syrup, Lean Cuisine pizzas, Walden Farms BBQ sauce. It's a matter of personal preference, of course.

Historically, I preferred full-fat dairy like cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt and hard cheese. But amazingly I've grown used to nonfat or lowfat varieties and they taste "normal" to me now, lol.

If you told me several months ago that I would come to like lowfat mayo, I would have made a wretching sound and rolled my eyes, heh heh. It's funny how we adapt and change, no?

Trigger828 05-06-2013 10:05 AM

I also will be incorporating some low fat options.

like low fat cheese is fine with me. I don't need full version.

I guess for me it is going to be a mixture of the lower cal. products I like.
Trial and error on trying some things should help me lower the calorie counts on the stuff I eat.

adapt and change. yes we do need to do that thru life in order to make it work well for us :)

Kissa 05-06-2013 10:12 AM

Hi Trigger. I was an Atkins babe for over 10 years and I love 'real fats'. I will not use commercial 'low fat' dressings, I find them horrid. I do things like thin down my regular caesar dressing with lemon juice or vinegar. I buy garlic or basil flavoured olive oil and use a tiny bit of that on my veggies on a DD, because it is so tasty it goes a long way.

On my UDs butter is my friend. :)

I do know that after I reached my goal on Atkins I continued to eat far more calories than I needed and, over time, that caused my to gain a pound here and there until, whoops, it added up to 10 lbs.

As soon as I started Juddding I came to realise that I simply didn't need that many calories.

I really hope you love JUDDD as much as I do. I still respect LC, but I am so loving being able to eat all the foods on the planet again. :)

grannysmith 05-06-2013 10:55 AM

I agree, Trigger, two tablespoons is a delicious amount of butter! I'd use that much just on toast...

Low fat mayo?? never gonna happen.Same with lofat cottage cheese. Some of the lo/no fat greek yogurt is pretty good, but i always buy plain and add my own stuff...or not. Greek Gods brand is wonderful plain, I can eat it like...butter! Expensive though.

I mostly stick to real food (except sweeteners) and tweak the recipes to add flavor without fats...using stuff like soy or wooster sauce, mushrooms in place of meat, tomato paste(I love the tube packaging) spices, herbs, broth, etc.

I need to go dig through boxes and find my Graham Kerr lo-fat cookbooks, they got put away when i started lo-carb lo these many years ago!

KeirasMom 05-06-2013 11:15 AM

I could eat 2 T of butter off the spoon. :o I don't think it's a lot at all!

Because of that . . . I tend to eat pretty low calorie for breakfast and lunch on an UD, and save the bulk of my calories for dinner, so I CAN have butter, or full fat cheese, or whatever. So, yes, I use diet foods even on my UDs, but as a compromise, so I can have one good, blow-out meal for dinner, if that makes sense.

that was key in my switching. I couldn't restrict. I felt myself going to slip very far from atkins very soon. It was hard to leave but I am so glad I jumped ship and found a new plan before I started gaining back any of the 30 I lost. whew.

I think JUDDD might well be the answer for me. THANKS

Trigger828 05-06-2013 11:20 AM

LOL Granny---low fat mayo never gonna happen again? I haven't bought any. Now I am probably going to stay to full fat only because alot of people say the taste really is diff. AND I LOVE my mayo !!

WOW low fat cookbooks. I did so much research finding the low carb meals and recipes. Now I should probably go off and find some real good low fat versions of meals.
YUP---thank you for reminding me I have to do this and soon. I need meal plans I know I can rely on and fast ones. I best get an arsenal of recipes ready.

--------------KeirasMom. makes sense. be smart on some meals so one meal can be a full tasty yummy version of somethign I love to eat. yea. you guys are changing my mindset from atkins to JUDDD. all making sense to me know. thanks

zipp2play 05-06-2013 11:20 AM

I use Salsa for my salads or a lighter balsamic dressing and I also use the zero calorie spray butter. Even when I was on atkins, I didn't use a lot of real butter. I'm not a fan of the taste

Flossyliz 05-06-2013 11:38 AM

For salads, I chop tomato and cucumber and stir in a small amount of good quality mayo. Leave for a while and the juice starts to run from the veggies. This is a great dressing for salad leaves. This is just the basic. Obviously you can add other salad veggies, herbs, seasoning, or whatever to taste.

grannysmith 05-06-2013 01:29 PM

Alton Brown's No Guilt Caesar recipe is good...85 cal for 2 T, plus it's made w tofu, for all us hormonally-challenged girls

Me and my mom used to watch him...he was pretty entertaining! I was 8 when Apollo 11 landed...i remember begging for "space food sticks"...never did get any...http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angry051.gif

TMI--I used to have kinky dreams about Graham Kerr! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ashamed002.gif A man who can cook, and all that passion when he ate it, butter dripping down his face...http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ashamed002.gifhttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ashamed002.gif

After his wife Trina(?) had a heart attack and bypass surgery, he devoted all his passion to low-fat cooking, he had a short-lived TV show, but I bought all his books!

My grandmother took me to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum when I was 11, so that was 1983. She bought my brother and me some freeze-dried ice cream. I thought it was the weirdest thing EVER!

An arsenal indeed! good way to put it! You don't want to think too hard about DDs, save that for UDs. Figure out what works for you, some need to have little meals, some save it up, I save it up, and still try to skip it if i can. But I'm watching fat on UDs too, since I'm not doing low carb.

Trigger828 05-06-2013 03:03 PM

yea I gotta watch the fat now cause I want to do moderate carb.

ANYONE try those Popchips? Special K has a version out also. But I compared ingredients and Popchips is all natural vs. spec. K has a tad of something in it, but basic same ingredients.

wonder about the taste. hmm would love a potatoe chip replacement.

grannysmith 05-06-2013 03:03 PM

OMGraham! He has a video series called "Take Kerr" on youtube...and he says he wants to love me...I'll see ya all tomorrow...

tobelowcarber 05-06-2013 03:30 PM

I use real fats but in less quantity. For example when I want to fry some eggs on DD I would use 1 tsp of butter/ghee or CO and fry the eggs on very low heat. I have noticed they don't stick to the pan if I use very low heat with so little fat. I don't use non-stick so the low heat works great.
Also, bake often on DD. I like to bake some egg whites or whole eggs in muffin cup. Sometimes I add some boiled veggies or cooked salmon to the egg whites and bake on a cookie sheet. It come out like a pizza. I also like boiled eggs, so that eliminates the fat. Baked fish does not need any fat as well. You can also use steamed veggies.

Librarygirl 05-06-2013 03:32 PM

I use spray butter sometimes, and cooking spray on DDs. Things I would not choose to eat sound heavenly on DDs, especially if I can have more volume and lower fat usually means lower cal. I almost never use real butter or oil on DDs because I'd rather have a bunch of tasteless food than a small bite of something rich. :D Amazing how much I will sacrafice on a DD, then turn into a foodie on UDs. ;)

Trigger828 05-06-2013 03:46 PM

good post tobelowcarber. gave me some ideas with baking!

I am one who needs a full belly. I am also trying to find ways to make MAXIMUM full meals on the lowest calories.
