Have to work on the water gain after my carrot cake ice cream indulgence yesterday

KeirasMom 05-04-2013 06:15 AM

I made oat bran on yesterday's DD. How do you make yours? I had a hard time getting it to a good consistency.

ETA: I bough it in the bulk section at Whole Foods, so there were no instructions. I just added water, nuked, added more water, nuked, added more water, nuked, then it was too much water, and I added gluc to thicken it back up. Still, for 30 calories for 2 T, it was pretty good.

down day menu is:

sauteed chicken on salad (no cheese etc, just veg)

tonight is dinner out at Hibachi restarurant for MIL's b-day. I will eat a bit of shrimp, bit of beef, small salad and NO rice or anything else.

I will get thru this! I got a bet with myself that I can do well :)
I want to win my own bet

My box says 1/4 cup oat bran to 1 cup water. I put mine into a soup mug and start with 2 minutes in the microwave. Then stir and do 20 seconds at a time until it is the consistency I like. Otherwise it will boil over very quickly and you have a nice mess to clean up. Today I did the two minutes and forgot it and when I came back about 5 minutes later it was a little thinner than I usually make it but I ate it that way and it was fine. Mine is 120 calories for the 1/4 cup (dry)and I measured it out and 3 T filled my 1/4 cup. :dunno:

I had oat bran today, yummy, forgot how much I like it. Had an unopened canister in my cupboard. I mixed 2 tbsp. oat bran with just under a 1/2 cup of water and nuked 1-1/2 minutes. It was a tad too thick so I added about 1/4 cup almond milk and nuked 30 seconds more. That was nice. Probably could add more liquid though, with good results.

Only thing is my oat bran (Old Wessex brand) is 60 calories per 2 tbsp. I know someone else mentioned 30 cal, so mine is double. I checked an online calorie counter and some brands are less calories. I have no idea why, oat bran is oat bran you would think. :dunno: Hodgson Mill is also higher cal (it's 480 per 1 cup).

Today was a good DD for me.
coffee 60
small turkey sandwich w/ dijoinaise (love this stuff! got it from a recommendation here) and a Wasa cracker with laughing cow 133
coffee 60
oat bran w/ almond milk 67

320

I didn't weigh mine out, but figured it this way:

1/2 cup bulk oat bran from Whole Foods is 120 calories
There are 8 T in a 1/2 cup
2 T is 1/4 of 8 T, so 1/4 of 120 calories is 30 calories

Now I think I should weigh it. :dunno:

adillenal 05-05-2013 07:19 AM

The two T did not fill my 1/4 cup and was way below the 40 g the box said was 1/4 cup so I have no idea how they are coming up with all of these measurements and calorie count. I had to round the 1/4 cup to get it to be 40 g.
My box says it is only oat bran and gives 1/4 cup dry (40 g) as 120 calories.

Looked up oat bran, uncooked on my calorie counter site and is says .25 cup is 58 calories and 40 g is 98 calories. At least I have been counting it as over rather than under all this time.

KeirasMom 05-05-2013 07:29 AM

Wouldn't 2T be an 1/8 of a cup?

I'm always baffled by the use of volume rather than weight but is it possible the calorie counts reflect the weights of the different coarseness of the bran? Eg, coarse bran will have a lower weight than the same volume of finer bran and therefore look like fewer calories?

adillenal 05-05-2013 11:32 AM

I think weighing is the only way to go since the oat bran can fluff or pack down so the old kitchen scale will be used from now on for my oat bran.

lc-chica 05-05-2013 11:58 AM

Yeah 2 tbsp is 1/8 cup. So the measurements above 1/4 cup - take half that. Mine is still double the calories

It probably is difference in volume. With the calorie counter I used, the oat bran that was the lowest cal was just generic no name oat bran. All the brand names were higher, although Quaker is still lower than mine. So who knows.

If yours from Whole Foods says 120 calories per half cup then 2 tbsp. is 30. You're right. So weird.

Mine is the same, 1/4 cup 120 calories, or 2 tbsp = 60 calories.

The brand I am using is Hodgson Mill. Guess some oat bran is "richer" than others or fatter. Strange.

KeirasMom 05-05-2013 04:47 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking weight is the most accurate, but I didn't write down what they put on the label of the bulk bin for weight. I'm going to need to make another trip. Grrr. So confusing.
