Exercise Check-in for May, 2013

Post anything about exercise and activity here.

We can just check in with a report of the day's workout,
Or give encouragement, ask for advice, tell about victories, offer tips and ideas.

Also feel free to tally up your last month's exercise/hours, or let us know results such as inch loss, new flexibility, stamina increases.

We'd love to hear about them and cheer! :yahoo: If you like, post them at the end of last month's April thread, too.

I have recently become interested in hula hooping. Anybody else interested in hula hoop fitness? Or currently hula hooping?

Scarlett46 05-01-2013 08:25 AM

I'm in the middle of my third week of the P90X program. I've noticed a definite difference this week in my ability to keep up, as well as a decrease in muscle soreness. Part of that is just how the program goes - I'll be sore again when I start week 5 and different routines. But I think part of it might be attributed to JUDDD too! I had some serious energy last night for my Plyometrics workout, even on a DD! And I'm feeling good today too!

LoCarbGal 05-01-2013 08:25 AM

Funny you should ask that Putz. I was in Walmart the other day and passed by a hula hoop display. Stopped, turned around and went back. They were only $5 and I almost got one, but didn't. I'm thinking of going back to get one. I used to be so good at it, but several years ago when I tried I couldn't do it anymore? What's with that??? Let me know if you start doing it!

b_lou_who 05-01-2013 08:34 AM

I have a great hoop made by Canyon Hoops. I used it last spring/summer for my abs, and then stopped. I just got it out again this weekend. LOVE it. If you get one start slow, with just a few minutes a day and work up. I had bruises at first. There are great beginner instruction videos on youtube, which really helped me. It takes a lot of space.
Buy a hoop that is the right size for your height, it should go from floor to sternum I believe.
2 hours yoga last night, at least an hour today, plus my little office calisthenics like leaning pushups, tricep dips, calf raises, and abs on the ball. Will hit the hoop when I get home for a few minutes.

Whitlin' 05-01-2013 08:43 AM

My report :kicking: is that I lost 1/2-inch each at abs and hips in April, and 1/4-inch each at waist and above bust measurement. So I'm delighted to really be cinching in. This is great since I'm at maintenance weight with JUDDD and already had good March inch loss.

I don't want to change anything, so I'll probably stick with mostly T-Tapp workouts in May.

Putz and LoCarbGal, my dd hula-hoops for fitness. She has a Canyon hoop that we ordered for her birthday. (Dance hoops are weighted, sized for height, and there are reasons they are better for exercising - don't remember exactly but you get a better workout.) She read the book Hooping by Christabel Zamor, but instead of workout DVDs she usually just hoops to favorite music selections. She really loves it and can do some very graceful and difficult-looking moves with it, has a nice trim waist. I am nowhere near as good, but like to join her with a regular hoop and have fun.

Scarlett, so happy for you that you are building your stamina for your workouts. My son is a fireman, and they do P90X sometimes as their calisthenics.

EDITING because I see b_lou_who likes her Canyon, too! :D

I keep thinking I want to get a weighted hula hoop, but haven't been able to find any the right size. I might just have to break down and order one. Being tall is sometimes a PITA!

I'm hoping to be a little more consistent with exercise this month. Last month, DH worked a lot during the hours I could go to the gym, and daycare there is sometimes overfull and they don't take more kids. I'd like to get Lily (the Daniff) into some sort of training and that should help, though there don't seem to be enough hours in the day already!

I rode my scooter to work this morning. Does that count? I try to maintain good posture. :hyst:

Putz 05-01-2013 09:16 AM

I was reading that the "childrens" hoop is difficult for adults because of the size. I just ordered an "adult" hoop that is weighted for exercise. I can't wait to try it!!
Just watching the PX90 infomercials scare me. :D

Whitlin' 05-01-2013 11:56 AM

LOL! Yep, infomercials get intense or even frantic sometimes for lots of exercise programs. Oh, that's terrific that you will have a package to look forward to soon. (Fun, fun) As I recall, my daughter thought something was wrong because it came in a smaller box than she expected, but the ends haven't put finally together yet until you get it, and it's very simple. She didn't have any trouble.

Several inspiring final posts to finish up our April thread today, too. Don't miss seeing those.

This hoola hooping sounds interesting...! I never could do it though, even as a kid... :(

Yoga yoga yoga today
tomorrow will get some yoga, and we are off for a weekend of camping at a hot springs pool, so swimming and light water aerobics are on call.
I HATE shopping for camping, but love BEING camping.
Kindle is charged for rocking chair lounging. YAY

Scarlett46 05-02-2013 11:17 AM

Today is YOGA for me too!

I love camping too... Sunshine, HOT weather, minimal bugs, and a good book. YUP! That's all I need to be happy for a weekend! LOL

KeirasMom 05-02-2013 11:20 AM

I just went to the Canyon website and they don't have pricing or items listed for sale and there's a notice about things being on back order due to demand.

May 1 - 30 minute Torso workout
________________

Well, shoot, Dawn! I guess if ever there is a "season" for buying hula hoops it is the first of May, and like they say, they are a small family company trying to keep up with a big new demand these days.

If it were me, since I have been impressed with them before and would just be buying a second hoop anyway, I would probably wait on them. But I have no knowledge that other hoops are not just as high quality. The author of the book my dd has, mentioned above, has a website. Actually there are a lot of sellers on the net... ...

Putz 05-03-2013 11:14 AM

This evening will be my first attempt at hula hooping in the past 30 years. LOL I will let you all know how it goes.
Hoping I don't look ridiculous! :aprayer:

Putz, I think it's a requirement to look ridiculous at first! ;)

Hope the vacation was great, idforshort!

calichris 05-03-2013 09:06 PM

5/1 cardio kickboxing
5/2 rest day
5/3 hip hop aerobics

I'm finding that exercising in the evenings is having an appetite suppressing effect for me lately.

Putz 05-04-2013 05:19 AM

OK.....so I got my hoop last night. Put it together....and got maybe 1 revolution before it hit the ground. Then I had a giggle fit because it was in front of my man, my 10 y/o niece and my mother. My next attempt I was able to do about 15 revolutions and I started giggling again and it fell to the ground. I convinced my 68 y/o mother to give it a go. She tried twice and started giggling. This evening, I'm going to work the hula alone and hopefully be able to keep it going for a full minute instead of like 8 seconds. LOL

Reading that made me giggle! I'm off to Walmart again this morning, and I think I will pick up one of those hoops this time. It may be my turn to giggle today - Mom will be shopping with me and very likely will be there when I try it. She may try it too. More moms and daughters bonding doing the hula hoop/giggle workout! :hyst:

Putz 05-04-2013 08:44 AM

More moms and daughters bonding doing the hula hoop/giggle workout!

I SOOO agree!!! Laughing and giggling feel amazing. :jumpjoy: We should ALL do it more! :hyst:

motivatedMomma4 05-04-2013 07:18 PM

I also just bought a weighted hula hoop from walmart!!! 2.5 lbs. took me a few tries tonight, but I got it!! I feel the burn for sure!! Im not sure If my abs hurt more from the hula hooping, or from forcing my husband to try it and the hysterical laughter that came from that :hyst::rofl::hyst::rofl: I almost peed my pants!!!
My goal is to work out out at least 3 times a week this month. I am getting closer to goal, and I really need to start toning up!! I would really like to start running again. My daughter just started track ,so we are going ot start running together a couple nights a week. She is only 11 so it wont be anything to intense but it will be a good start back into a routine for me!!

Putz 05-05-2013 05:34 AM

Oh my gosh! I did better last night with the hoop but I still can't keep it up for more than about 20 seconds. I was able to catch it before it hit the ground, but that was way too much time wasted having to keep restarting. My goal by June is to be able to go at least a whole minute without losing it. Eventually I would like to go a whole 30 minutes!

Crystal...Kudos for not peeing yourself!! :jumpjoy:

Putz 05-05-2013 06:08 AM

For any hikers/walkers/runners....Please check yourself for ticks. I know we all live in different areas but where I live, in Indiana, the ticks are terrible. I was walking with my grown kids at the resevoir last night. Around a wildlife observation area. Within 5 minutes, my youngest boy had 6 ticks on him and my Man had 5. I, myself only had 1. We skidaddled back to the parking lot at which time we thoroughly checked each other over, finding 4 more.
So please be careful and check both you and your loved ones if you are outside exercising or just enjoying the weather.

phoenix17 05-05-2013 07:42 AM

Putz thanks for the reminder- hiking is my exercise of choice and also how I meditate. I am heading out today hopefully for about 3 hours and this is a good reminder as I often forget to check.

Hula hooping!! Who'da thunk it!? I remember doing that when I was a kid. I may have to look in to that. BTW, all you gigglers- laughing burns calories! (abs work out!).

I started an "exercise club" with some friends via email - our modest goal is to do no less than 120 minutes of purposeful exercise each week with my "stretch" goal at 240. It has been very helpful to keep checked in with friends so Whitlin' Thanks for starting this new thread because I think it will help even more!

KeirasMom 05-05-2013 08:21 AM

Okay, you all convinced me. I went to Target and found a weighted hula hoop (2 pounds, and around $30). I got Keira a water-weighted hula hoop (toy area for about $8). I put on my HRM and did 5 minutes yesterday. I was afraid to do more since I keep hearing about bruising and soreness. Honestly, the weighted hoop is WAY easier to keep going than a regular hoop. My five minutes of hooping only burned 20 calories though, so that's sad, but it was still fun! I'm not sore or bruised this morning, so I'll do more later.

LoCarbGal 05-05-2013 08:30 AM

I didn't wind up getting a hula hoop at Walmart yesterday. They weren't weighted and they didn't have any as big as I think I need. So I'll keep looking. I'll have to check out my Target next week.

KeirasMom 05-05-2013 08:36 AM

The weighted hoops are in the exercise area, near all the yoga equipment. They aren't with the kid's stuff, if that helps. My Target only had one size.

LoCarbGal 05-05-2013 08:48 AM

Thanks Dawn, it does.
