I have a question about transitioning to maintenance. Is there a minimum spread between the DD and UD calories that has to happen in order to keep the SIRTs flowing? And what % should I move to in order to stop the weight loss but continue the health benefits? 50% Maintenance Mode? Thanks!

It really depends on how you want to do it. I've read that a 1000 calorie spread should be enough to keep SIRTs active. Some continue to do low DDs and have higher UDs. Some raise their DDs to the 50-60% range. I do 5:2 for maintenance and it works well for me. Mostly, you just should play around until you find what feels right.

I was going to try 5:2 but I don't trust myself just yet to keep the UDs under control. I'll try bumping my DDs up by 100-200 cals, making sure to keep the spread at 1,000 or more to see how that works. I think I need more calories on the DDs because I'm always exhausted and hungry. I think it's a good time to transition to maintenance or at least add more calories somewhere!

Good morning JB's. I've been awake since 4:45 am, thanks to the considerate bf. I would have just gone back to sleep, but tossed and turned knowing I needed to be up by 7:00. I have to march in graduation this morning at 10 am.

Hope everyone's having a great Sat. so far!

Happy Saturday Everybody! I think I'm going to give 5:2 a try and on the 5 UD's eat in a window and see how I do. I am just a whimp on the weekends trying to do rotations so hoping this will keep me losing. Tried 4:3 but even sticking to a DD on Fri. was a challenge. If this doesn't work I may just have to bump up my DD calories and lose at a slower pace. I've been naughty, no excuses. I'll start a DD and then I derail somehow. Was suppose to have one yesterday then I went to this nationwide country cookin restaurant to turn in an application to wait tables so we had an "idea". Let's have lunch while we're here. Biscuits and cornbread, oh my! Any howsee, we'll see how it goes. I'm just losing my determination I once had. So close to goal, but tired of barely eating EOD.

I hope that's an easy solution for you JMBM.
The lovely thing is that you can take a JUDDD holiday and just dive back in. So, if 5:2 doesn't do it, you can always play around with the windows and the DDs till you find what does.

CindyLG, I hope you get a better sleep tonight!

Yeah I'm hoping. Going to give it a try anyway and see what happens. If nothing changes just will probably go back to EOD rotations til I get these last stinking 15 lbs. off. I guess I'm just feeling burned out.

Recipe: Asian Noodle Salad

Not sure where to post this, but I wanted to share a recipe. I like the La Bou Asian Noodle salad a lot, and I made this one and it tastes very like it! Plus, it is not only much less expensive to make at home, but I calculated it out and it is 273 calories for 1.5 cups. I added 2 oz chicken and 1T chopped peanuts for a grand total of 344 filling and delicious calories. Had to share!

Asian Noodle & Veggie Salad with Soy Vinaigrette (makes 4 servings; average cost per serving: $1.50)
If fresh veggies like broccoli florets are a little too crispy or hard on your teeth, feel free to give them a little blanch first. Bring 4-6 cups of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the broccoli and let it cook for 45-60 seconds, until it turns bright green and is still crunchy & firm, but yields easily to a fork’s tines. Immediately transfer the broccoli to a bowl of water with ice (to stop the cooking process). Drain and set aside to use in the salad. Done! : )
Ingredients
1/3 c canola oil (note: I subbed sesame hot chili oil for about 1/5th of this)
1/2 c low sodium soy sauce
1/2 c rice vinegar
1 T brown sugar (I used splenda brown sugar blend)
1/2 t ground ginger (I used the fresh-in-the-tube kind)
1/2 t granulated garlic (fresh-in-the-tube kind here too)
1 10 oz package Asian style noodles (lo mein, chow mein, soba, etc.)
1 medium red bell pepper, cut into 1″ strips
1 c broccoli florets
1 c bean sprouts
1/2 c chopped cilantro
1/2 c chopped scallions
3/4 c chopped peanuts or cashews (optional)
Directions
1. Prepare the dressing by combining the first 6 ingredients in a bowl and whisking together vigorously until smooth. Cover and set aside.
2. Cook the noodles according to package instructions. Drain and rinse under cold running water until the noodles are at room temperature or cool. Drain them very well a second time and place in a bowl. Pour about 2/3 of the dressing over the noodles and toss together until completely coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
3. Remove the noodles from the fridge and add the broccoli, pepper strips, bean sprouts and any other veggies you may be using. Add the rest of the dressing and toss everything together until well-coated.
4. Serve generous portions of salad in bowls or on salad plates. Top with chopped scallions & cilantro, add a healthy sprinkle of chopped nuts, and enjoy!

We had a great anniversary. A quiet, romantic, dinner at SeaShore on City Island. Today I got TOM. But the laundry is beckonning and so up I must get from my chair. I will try a second pterostilbene since I'm severely fatigued.

Good morning, just wanted to share some thoughts this morning. Got about 2 min. before I need to run my azz in the bathroom to get ready for work.

I woke up early this morning thinking, I can't do this anymore. I can't do another DD. I'll just stay away from the JUDDD boards for a while.... I HAVE to do this! I can't stop and gain this little amount back. Please help me, by encouragment. Love you guys!

It sounds to me like a maintenance break may be in order? Definitely don't give in to the "oh-srew-its" all or nothing thinking. Just take a breather and return refreshed. You've come too far, girl!

I have so much sympathy for your thoughts and reactions. It was the over-riding, desperate thought that I couldn't have a 6th weekend in a row where I regained the same 2lbs that had been bouncing back and forth for the previous 5 weeks that led me to the potato hack at the beginning of March.

Please think about going into maintenance for a while and continuing to visit the JUDDD boards if it helps you (if it doesn't help - give it the body swerve - and have it away on toes - as we say in parts of the UK).

Best wishes, whatever you choose to do.

Cindy, I'd hate to see you go backwards when you've come so far!
Why don't you up your DD allowance to 60% and do JUDDD maintaining for a while. That would give you at least 1000cals for your DDs and you won't lose the sirtuins.
You can do this – and we're all behind you.

LG, I definitely advocate a maintenance break. OK I possibly overdid mine at 4 months but throwing in 1 or 2 DDs or MDs every week kept my weight stable, meant I didn't lose complete touch w JUDDD and just let me relax & get on with life away from my "dieting brain".

Your "slow pokes" thread inspired me while I was away as it helped me overcome my all-or-nothing mentality. I hope you stick around so it sticks!

Best of luck whatever you decide.

I have gotten discouraged a time or 2 from bouncing the same 4 lbs. Then it was bouncing the same 2 lbs. And I think it is just because my body likes this "safety net of fat". But I don't want to be fat anymore. And with every bounce, I told myself that I was not giving up. That I was going to keep on keeping on. And today I hit a new low.
LG....you are definitely not alone in your thoughts and feelings. Big hugs to you

On my UD's, I ask myself what I have done so far today to get me closer to my goal. If I have no answer, I do something.....even if it just holding my gut in for 20 seconds. Asking myself that question works for me. Its not guilt that I haven't done anything. It's more like motivation. I feel compelled to have an answer other than "nothing".

LG, I am a strong proponent of maintenance breaks, as needed, throughout this journey. I've lost nearly 125 pounds, and took 2 full month-long maintenance breaks during that time. Our bodies will try to sabotage us, desperately hoping to hold on to the weight, and we have to be stronger. I used the 50% DD numbers during my maintenance breaks, and after a month, my body just gravitated back to WLM on its own. I didn't force it. In hindsight, and after reading all the posts about our bodies needing to maintain a loss for some time before being ready to release more, I think it was the best thing I could have done for myself.

I also have that all or nothing mentality, and that's what caused me to gain to nearly 300 pounds. I would get frustrated with a plan and go off the rails, and ALWAYS gained all the weight I lost PLUS more when I did that. Sometimes the victory comes from being gentle with ourselves and allowing our new bodies to adjust to their current realities, instead of trying to beat them into submission.

Please stick around, and do whatever you need to do to keep yourself going. If it's doing another plan for a bit, do it. If it's maintaining for a bit, do it. Just don't give up!

Thank you everyone.I feel as though I am already taking a maintenance "break" even though I am still doing eod rotations...ended up doing 2 UDs this weekend, but for the most part I have stuck to it and am not losing. I know I am not doing 0-200 calorie DDs like some of you, but I am sticking to 20% most of the time. I also go over sometimes on UDs, but by a few hundred, not thousands. My body is resisting losing and TOM didn't come at all last month...I've been feeling like it's coming any day now for about 6 wks (and all the PMS to go with it)...not sure what's going on, but my emotions are all over the place, not losing weight and feeling discouraged.

I won't quit. I WILL NOT quit. I've come too far. May 13 will be 6 months. I wish I had more to show for it in lbs lost, but I can certainly attest that it has had a big positive affect on almost everything else. The weight loss HAS to follow, doesn't it?

I'm going to do a DD today as planned, but I think I will make this week 5:2.

Hello All!

I'm hoping to maintain this week as I'm leaving in a couple hours to fly to St Louis for a week of software workshops. This will involve eating a hotel breakfast, a catered lunch & dinner out for the next 3+ days! I'm afraid boredom eating will be a distinct possibility. I'm not going to drive myself crazy about it. Just being so far from home and away from everything familiar will be stressful enough without worrying about every morsel of food. I'll get back into gear when I return home.

I'm taking a laptop, so I'll try to pop in from St Louis!

Have a great week!

Our dear Cindy,

You will be just fine doing a mini-maintenance break, no doubt. Keeping those sirtuins flowing by using 5:2 or another method will keep those "positive effects" going until you're ready to restart losing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving your mind and body a maintenance rest! I recognize that is sort of what I've been doing myself...keeping with the daily rotations and DD adherence but having way too many UUUUUUUADs to have any weight loss consistency. For me personally, I know it's time to get back on the path to losing again but I think my body needed to rest at the current weight level for a bit, first.

One of the added JUDDD benefits is learning to listen to our bodies. I have not been very good at this in the past, but am finding that the journey here is helping me to listen better and be a bit more connected to the skin I'm in. That may sound silly to others....but that is how I feel.

Great big huge hugs and please DO NOT stay away from the board here, as we all love you and want to support you, just as you do for us.

Kimmie

Can I ask you ladies a possibly TMI question? Have any of you had a Brazilian wax? I think I'm going to get one in the next week or two before my pool club opens up, and I'm not sure what to expect in terms of pain and discomfort, etc.

Cindy, please don't just give up. I speak from experience...maybe different reasons, but the results could be the same. Last October, I quit my job to care for my 95yo mom, who had quit eating, and wanted to sleep all the time. I went to the ALS where she lived 3 times a day, at meal times, to encourage her to eat, and not go immediately back to bed. This went on till the day after Christmas, when we had to rush her to emergency. She was in the hospital for a week, and then transferred to hospice, where she died on January 12. During this time, from October through her passing, and beyond, I just ate willy-nilly, and anything that sounded good to me, went in my mouth, and settled on my already poochy stomach and hips. For the first month I took care of her, my weight remained about the same. I'm sure the Sirt1 had a lot to do with this. But, after a while, they disappeared, and I started putting on weight like you would not believe. I gained back every pound I had lost, plus about 20 of its friends. Now, I am struggling to lose this, and it's just not as easy this time around as it was last year.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I just want to encourage you not to give up. It's just not worth what you go thru to start over. Take a maintenance break like some of the others have suggested, but please....don't undo all the good you have done.

Cindy, that sounds a lot like menopausal symptoms to me! Be gentle with yourself.

I'm glad you're determined not to quit!
