I always had a flat stomach and slender waist, but I had cellulite on my thighs and was embarrassed to wear swim suits. I WISH I had the body I hated back then. So easy to look back and try and impart wisdom, but you have to live and learn.

Yes, that is the Golden Gate bridge in the background...my daughter is a member in a moped brigade...they have chapters all over the US, and get together for rallies. What fun!

And yet, hearing it from your mom, just won't do it.

Has she looked at weight charts to get her 115 number? Or is she just pulling it out of thin air. (Can't tell how tall she is, but judging by the volleyball size, I would say MORE than 5'3"!) I still think the classic formula (100 pounds, plus 5 pounds for every inch over 5'0", plus or minus 10% for small-large frames/muscle) is a good place to start.
my first steady boyfriend in high school told me i'd be perfect if i lost 10 lbs...i was 5'8 back then, and weighed 130. As it turns out, he was gay...and has since died of AIDS...dunno why I had to include that, but there it is...and I had more than one gay "boyfriend".

When I was in highschool, I never could wrap my head around the fact that being taller meant I was supposed to be heavier. My friends were all around 120 pounds, so I had to be that same weight--and I was 120 pounds through most of high school, at 5'9". I was 106 pounds my senior year, though even I knew that was too thin.

The clothing thing is a problem too. When all your friends can share their clothes, you want to be able to as well. I was wearing size 4-6 in 1989-1990 sizes, probably size 0 in today's sizing. Sometimes my clothes were too small for my friends, who I thought had the perfect bodies, and yet I still felt big and awkward. It's crazy how our body image can get so warped.

I think your daughter looks perfect Nanner.

haha - buzzed is good. And, yes, you look just right. My daughter was 160 last year, and she looked great. I had a friend I had years ago was so thin and cute, and I was surprised to learn that she weighed 150. Thought for sure she was 120 or so, but she also was big boned. I've seen my daughter at 160, and I thought she looked great! I wish that there was more education for kids on different weights and body types, etc. I know my daughter is just going by what she "thinks" is skinny.

Lynn you look great! Yeah I like to be a buzzy now and again, but the calories in my favorite beverage I'm sure are pretty up there. I like the hard lemonades, but I'm sure they're loaded w/sugar.

There are interesting sites, which I am sure you can find with a simple search, about how different people can look at the same height and weight. People go to the page that they are(divided by sex/height/weight) and post their pictures.
This might be a great thing for your daughter to look at, to see what other women at her height and weight look like. Sometimes it is so difficult to SEE ourselves objectively, even in pictures. We just automatically put a value judgement on top of the picture.

Yes... weird/sad...
I've been as high as 230 and I know in my mind I felt equally fat at 230lb as I did at 92lb. I don't feel thin now. I kind of know I am- sort of, but I don't really feel it most of the time. Some times I see my wrist or fingers really quickly and think "who do those thin fingers/ wrist belong to?" Sometimes I look at the waist on my skirts and say "How do I fit in this?" I will always need to use the scale and my clothes to "check" myself. I don't know if I'll ever see myself as I am.

Just jumping in to say that my daughter did weigh the day she started, apparently just didn't want to tell me so she didn't have to tell me her weight. Anyhow, she weighed yesterday after her one week on 1000/2000, and she had lost 4.5 lb! I think that's great for those calorie numbers.

That IS great. How is she finding it? I would be interested to have a female teen's perspective for my daughter to hear about if she decided to start.

She said she likes this diet. I think her loss could have been more, but she had a few treats on Sunday on her DD.

If she's average, she's considered overweight, but not by much. Her legs are all muscle, and she hates that, but it's from volleyball, basketball (she used to play), and she jogs. I wish she would realize how many people would love to have her legs!
I think she looks wonderful in the picture. This thread really speaks to me, because I was the exact same way in high school. Thought I was so fat and was NOT, ever.

My daughter is built just like me...but only 5'2! Fortunately, she never had huge body issues, but inherited my crappy metabolism and whacked-out nervous system, so at 30 she really has to watch it.
I never knew this! I always wondered why my wrists are so much larger than other peoples! When my DH and I were dating, he purchased a bracelet from a jeweler friend and had to get it made larger, because it wouldn't fit my wrist (ha ha) and when his friend met me later, he was like "huh, she's not big at all" - no I just have large wrists!

That makes sense, wow! I am large framed. Who know? I always kind of thought so, but on the other hand thought I was just trying to make excuses for myself.

It stinks and it doesn't I guess... for one thing, it means I will never (healthfully) see a SUPER low number on the scale, and I have always wanted to be LITTLE. But I am learning to love and appreciate good things about my body, these past few years I have really worked on that.

Sadly always fighting my weight set me up for a lot of weight gain later on in life, when I finally "gave up."

I always told myself I was large-framed. It was a shock to me to measure my wrist and discover, no, I have a normal frame, and only just barely. I am almost SMALL-framed!

Nanner, I'm just catching up on this thread and think your daughter looks slim!

I've just finished reading "Brain Over Binge". The author was is a similar situation to your daughter. Her conclusion is that it's important that teenagers understand what "normal" weight should be. She blames her struggle with bulimia on first becoming anorexic while trying to weigh the same as her school friends. It's on Kindle. You might find it useful.

I'm only 5'2" and weighed 115 lbs when I was a skinny little thing at high school. At 5'7", with a large frame, such a low goal weight sounds dangerous for your daughter - especially as she looks so good now. 115 is probably what some small-framed, shorter friend weighs.

If a bit of midriff pudge is the problem, suitable stretching and twisting exercises would soon deal with it. I'm not an exercise expert but I know yoga would work. Might want something more funky for a youngster though.

She does love yoga and used to do it - seems to have fallen by the wayside, though. Maybe I'll suggest she get back into it and maybe now that school will be out soon, she'll get some more jogging and yoga in. I wish we lived in a town with a gym, and we'd both join, but we're 30 miles from the closest ones. I will recommend that book to her also - thank you so much. I'd love it if it would click with her that she doesn't have to weigh 115 to look good - she looks so good right now and doesn't need to lose much at all.

Might be good for you to read the book first. Teenagers tend to think it won't apply to them.
Come to think of it, don't we all tend to do that?!
