In need of help for hubby
 
My hubby is having his first DD today. He thinks he's going to die or starve to death and is really crabby. I've been searching around the boards and the internet for snack ideas to get him through the night and found some great ideas (popcorn, cheese, lunchmeat).

The part I am needing help with is making sure we have calculated his DD and UD numbers correctly. He is 5'9.5", 43 yo, and 185 lbs. He does not have a desire to lose weight but would like to activate his SIRT. Does he need to follow the 500 calorie DD during induction for this to happen or rather what is the maximum % he can use for his DD/UD calculations in order to activate the gene?

No, if he is not trying to lose weight, he can eat at maintenance level which would be closer to 900 to 1000 cals for DD. Do you know what his UD level is?

Poor guy he was restricting much more than necessary. ;)

Using the 20% weight loss mode on the calculator, his DD are 436 and UD 2178.

So, bumping his DD to 900 or 1,000 for the induction phase would still activate SIRT?

And I guess that brings up another question. What kind of spread or range is needed during the induction phase and beyond to activate it and keep it activated?

Just looked at Der Johnson's site and he says:
The two-week induction phase is the most restrictive part of the Johnson UpDayDownDay Diet™ but is necessary to activate the body's genetic response to alternate-day calorie restriction. To begin experiencing the many benefits from "turning on" your SIRT1 gene, it is important to limit yourself to no more than 500 calories on Down Days during this period. Prepackaged diet shakes and bars from Slim FastŪ, AtkinsŪ, and other companies can help make sure that you don't go above 500 calories on Down Days during these two weeks.

As the whole point is the sirtuins, I'd say sorry but stick with 500 for now - shakes and bars optional! Once the sirts are established, he should be able to go to the highest maintenance level on Johnson's calculator.

Or he could eat in the window and activate the sirt-1! 16 hour fast. 8 hours to feed and he could use maintenance level. :) Add to that pterostilbene and he is good to go!

:goodpost: I think he needs to stick w/ 500 or so to activate the SIRTs. After 2 weeks he can raise his DDs if he wishes. I think lower DDs keep SIRTs flowing better so he may just wish to eat higher UDs. Or just have 2 low DDs per week like 5:2.

Give him a huge plate of cabbage with 2 oz of chicken or something. There are foods that will make the hungries go away. You could also purchase some glutamannan which you can add to broth and other liquids and it aids in a full stomach sensation. Psysillium tabs also help, so I've heard.

Quick thought - did he have that 2,200 calorie day yesterday? So that he would be "fully fueled" today? If not, then he is quite correct to be crabby, since he missed something he was due! :)

Also, how much does he exercise? If he exercises enough to feel he should use the next higher exercise option, his numbers would be 500 and 2500, so he would have needed an even higher caloric intake yesterday to start.

Thank you for all the great responses. He likes to jog/run but he's not consistent with it, maybe once a week right now. He does walk at least 5 miles a day for work though so should he factor that in or not since his body is used to it? I doubt he ate 2200 yesterday unless he hit the vending machine. I'll be sure to tell him to fuel up tomorrow so that his 500 calorie DD on Friday will be easier. I made him some air popped popcorn and you'd think he'd died and went to heaven - said it was the best popcorn he'd ever had :laugh: I think part of the problem is because he ate his eggs at 8 a.m. even though I told him to hold out as long as he could....that'll teach him to listen to me :D

Oh he sounds like mine! It's funny cause he's a big guy, but, doesn't have near the weight to loose that I do. But, he too acted like I was starving him to death. I couldn't get mad at him (despite the DRAMATIC response from what I thought was a big tough man!) because he's really doing this just to support me (he could lose weight just by looking at a diet coke). But what I did for him (and me) was make up HUGE batches of really hearty but very low cal soups. I got a few off here and some from WW (when WILL I cancel that membership!) Most were 30 - 40 cal a cup. And let me tell you 3 cup fulls LOOKS like a massive amount of food (especially because I put them in our smaller cereal bowls). I think visually it was satisfying to him and I do think because it was so voluminous he really did get full from it. Im fine with a shake that's the same amount of calories, but, this is what really got him through.

Soup is exactly what I though might help to keep him satisfied but I haven't found any easy recipes yet. I guess I need to make that my mission for his sake and mine! Do you have any quick soup recipe links you'd like to share? :)

DW never sticks with JUDDD very long. She gets too hungry on DDs, but she has to feed herself on my DDs. She loves that I do 5:2 for maintenance, but tonight I notice she still hasn't figured out what to make... It's almost 9pm!

...stealth JUDDDing...

I hear noise in the kitchen... Either DW is looking for food or feeding the cats :rofl:

Not quick, unfortunately. The ones I've been making have a TON of veggies in them, which takes a lot of prep work, but they are super easy. And they make so much I was able to portion them out and freeze a lot too. I also find that the spicier I make it (if you guys can handle spicy) the more fulfilled he (and I) get on it. Spicy really satiates us. I did a Taco soup from this board that was well worth it. Let me go find the recipe.

Here you go, I copied it straight from the DD Recipes thread! We like spicy so I added quite a large Jalapeno, a large poblano, and 2 of the adobo's. We also added in a package of miracle rice. But I didn't think it really added anything and would be fine without anything like that.

WEIGHT WATCHERS MEXICAN ZERO POINTS SOUP
Hands-on time: 40 minutes
Time to table: 1 hour
Makes 12 cups

6 cups vegetable broth (I used 6 cups water and Goya mexican boullion)
14 ounces canned diced tomato, Mexican-style preferred (I used Rotel Mexican Flavor)
2 cups fresh green beans
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 small zucchini (about 8 ounces before trimming)
1 cup tomatillo, cubed (start with about 4 ounces or 2 medium tomatillos- I couldn't find these, just chopped up some Roma's instead)
1/2 medium poblano chili pepper, chopped (I used a large)
1 medium jalapeņo, membranes and seeds removed, minced (I used a large)
1 medium red or yellow onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon fresh oregano (I used 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano)
2 roasted red peppers packed in water
1 tablespoon chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (these are found in small cans in the 'Mexican' section and boy, and be careful, they are hot!!!! I like hot so we used 2 but diced em up very fine)
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

OPTIONAL BUT TIME-SAVING TIP Bring the vegetable broth (or water for bouillon) to a boil in an electric tea kettle or in the microwave while prepping the vegetables.

Heat a large pot or Dutch oven on MEDIUM HIGH. Add the vegetables and spices (canned tomatoes through oregano) as they're prepped. Add the broth when it's ready. Cover and bring to a boil. (Because I used boiling water, the soup was just starting to boil when I added the last ingredients.) Once at a boil, partly uncover the soup, reduce the heat to maintain a slow simmer and simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir in salt, lime juice and cilantro. (I then whizzed it a bit with my hand blender to break up most of the veggies but still leave some chunky. I also tossed in a bag of the miracle noodles).


NUTRITION ESTIMATE (From the website, I did not recalculate)
Per Cup: 43 Cal (6% from Fat, 24% from Protein, 70% from Carb); 3 g Protein; 0 g Tot Fat; 0 g Sat Fat; 0 g Mono Fat; 8 g Carb; 2 g Fiber; NetCarb6; 3 g Sugar; 20 mg Calcium; 1 mg Iron; 553 mg Sodium; 0 mg Cholesterol; Weight Watchers 0 points

Life is Good, I'd say a 5-mile-a-day walk would take anyone into one of the exercise categories, yes, even without extras like the jogging. It's based on your level of activity, so yes, what he's used to is what it's talking about. It would just be up to him which one he thinks fits him. The light exercise would place him at 500/2500, and moderate would be more. All best wishes.

In Dr. Johnsons book he talks about an old study done with 120 people in a retirement home. 60 ate normaly 60 followed an up day down day patern. These people needed about 1600 calories a day to maintain there weight. Instead of eating 1600 calories a day they ate 900 one day and 2300 the next day. At the end of 3 years 13 people in the controle group had died and only 6 in the diet group of this number there were 3
deaths from heart disease in the dieters and 9 deaths from heart disease in the controles. So these people saw a health benefit with no real cut in calories or weight loss!

Does DW do all of the cooking? My bf used to cook sometimes, but I've taken it over completely now. I got tired of tough steaks LOL!

No I do almost all the cooking, but on Monday and Wednesday she is on her own. I don't cook on my DDs. If I'm not eating I'm not cooking!
