Well, it said canned so I just thought that would be already cooked. I don't have any dry ones here or canned either to look at the actual product.

Luck's lowfat black eyed peas. 30 calories per serving and 3.5 servings per can. Not sure if your grocer carries that brand, but it has a yellow label. Me too on the cornbread! Hope I figured it right? I compared to other brands that were like 70 per serving. They taste great to me. Hope it's not false advertisement!

Re the hemp protein....smoothies can mask the flavor of a lot of things. Maybe you could add small amounts to smoothies. Not gobs at one time, but little by little you'll use it up.

Figured wrong on entire can. Should be 105 for the whole can instead of 99.

Not to be a downer, but that black eyed pea count sounds way off. They are quite high cal. Unless the serving size is suuuuuper small.

Well then they have put the wrong information on their nutrition labels. It does sound very low, but I checked several cans and they all say the same. Fat can contribute to large amount of calories if they are adding a larger % of pork fat for flavor to other brands than the brand I use. That's the only thing I can figure. I'm just documenting my calorie count based on what I'm reading on the can.

Nope, 99 is the accurate calorie count per can. 3.3 servings per can @ 30 calories per serving. Serving size is 1/2 cup.

I have never seen that brand. With my luck they are regional. Went back and looked on my calorie calc and it was canned not dried cooked and was 200 calories for one cup. Wonder why Luck's is so low? I am going to buy some dry ones and see if I can make me some small portions and freeze them.

Well it says "low fat" on the can. Idk if they are using a smaller % of pork fat than other brands. That's the only thing I can figure. Makes me worried now if their nutritional label is accurate. I've been eating those for DD's for a while now and still seeing losses. All though they are small losses I'm still losing so guess it has to be close right? May need to find other DD choices anyway. I just get so full eating those peas and potatoes!!! Yum, yum, yum!

Well, black eyed peas are high in fiber so that is good. Probably why they are so filling. I will check out the options at the grocery store tomorrow.

From what I've seen online, 1/2 cup of black eye peas cooked with no seasoning is 100 calories for 1/2 cup, or 4 oz. I don't know how Luck's can claim that.

I had to Google this as it sounded like an implausible run of words and I wondered if this was not a wholly serious recommendation. Obviously, it's entirely serious: oh my But it's certainly a good suggestion and I should look at starting to do that for my lunch on UDs or as a small add-on to my high protein breakfasts in general. Thank you.

Blackeyed peas are blackeyed peas. Just like kidney beans are kidney beans. They don't differ between manufacturer like a processed multi-ingredient food does. As far as I can see, the only way the cal count could be that low was if they are counting water in the can as part of the 1/2 cup.

Well regardless of the calorie counts I am still peased, I mean pleased with my losses. Just reported what was on the can so if it's more then so be it. Guess I'll just have to tweak around the calorie amounts if I continue to eat that on DD's.

I have no idea, but I think I'm reconsidering having black eyed peas again on a DD.

I just googled 'Luck's black-eyed peas' and came up with 120 calories per 1/2 cup serving according to 3 different calorie counting sites.
If you're still losing using 1/2 cup serving then I'd just continue on like you're doing.

These were the Luck's "low-fat" black eyed peas. The reason I found these is because I was at the store one day and just looked at all the different calorie counts on different brands of BEP's and when I saw these were 30 per 1/2 cup serving I was like "wow" what's the difference? Then I looked at the front of the label and it has a little low fat label on the front of the can. I mentioned in an earlier post that other brands do season w/pork fat and so I guess the lucks low fat uses less of that. And added fat can attribute to higher calorie counts. And you really can't compare a fresh serving of peas to canned because canned has water included in servings. Anyway, I was really happy when I found them because I love my BEP's! I could just eat a can of that and be satisfied. I have a can of Bush's BEP's that are 70 per 1/2 cup serving so that still puts the whole can at around 210. I've bought cans of soup that were so called "light" for around 220 per can that didn't fill me up like the peas do. So I guess as long as I don't eat 3 or 4 cans I'll be ok. lol

Don't do it Adi!!!! You'll become a pea addict!!! Now you've got me wanting cornbread!! If I can figure out how to scan that label I'm going to see if I can message it to you so maybe you can take a looksy and see if I've missed something. I definitely don't want to shoot myself in the foot so to speak. My losses have been a wee bit slower they seem so maybe they're not reporting something on the label or i didn't add something right. I bought my cottage cheese for my potato tomorrow btw!

WOW. A great black eyed pea debate.
So I stopped at a little Mom and Pop grocery on my way home thinking they would not even have canned BE peas. I was Wrong. tHEY HAD PLAIN, WITH BACON, WITH SNAPS, WITH JALAPENOS AND ON AND ON. I BOUGHT ONE 15.5 oz can of peas, water and salt as the ingredients. Allens - packed from fresh shelled peas. 1/2 cup= 70 calories.
I also bought a bag of dry ones. 1/4 cup dry = 90 calories. I measured 1/4 cup out and I am cooking them to see how much they will be cooked. Surely they will be over 1/2 cup but we shall see.
Can't believe the various calorie counts that are out there for blackeyed peas. Sure makes it hard to count calories.

Maybe they just have 4 ounces of peas in the whole can and the rest is water.

What I am really craving are the tiny green peas that my mom and dad used to grow in our garden. They had a little black eye, but were bright green. Not the round sweet peas, but what we called field peas (not anything like what's called field peas in the store). I never knew there were any other kind when I was growing up, lol. Now they seem impossible to find! I hope to find something similar when I go to the farmer's market this summer.

ETA: Livestrong says that 1 cup of kidney beans is 613 calories! That can't be right.

We had creams, crowders, purple hulls and blackeyed peas in our garden growing up. Although some of them when immature were green with a spot I don't think we raised what you had. Now I like pink eye purple hulls really well also. REALLY I LIKE PEAS.

ok. mY 1/4 CUP DRY BLACKEYED PEAS ARE COOK, DRAINED AND MEASURED. They are now 3/4 cup so 3/4 cup cooked from dry is 90 calories. Since it is an UD for me I am eating them as I type. YUM!!!

They are even more delicious over rice with chopped red onions.

Well I can't figure out how to add a picture. I tried to insert image, but it asked what URL and I have no idea what it's talking about. Took a pic of nutritional info on the can so you could take a look at it.
