Does erythritol have calories?

Or should I say do you count anything for erythritol?

Thanks!

Some people don't count it at all, some count it at half the cals/carbs of sugar. Sorry no definitive answer. Just like with CO....some count it, some don't.

I think the science is totally different for E vs CO and calories. I don't think E has any digestible calories. If it does, it's mighty small. It doesn't raise my blood sugar AT ALL, and that is pretty rare. Protein raises my blood sugar, even!

RR- I didn't say the science was the same. I said that some people count, some don't. Some people feel it affects them, some don't.

I just bought a bag to try since I am trying to quit using so much sucralose. The bag says 0 calories for 1 t but the blurb on the bag says 95% fewer calories than sugar and virtually calories free. That means anything over a t is going to have a few calories.
That said, I am not planning on counting the calories to start with. It should not be a large enough number to cause me problems and I can always go back and adjust.

Okay thanks for your input.

I didn't realize some people didn't count coconut oil. Hmm...

Just wanted to add

I did notice that prepared drinks (Zevia soda, Lifewater, and Vitamin Water Zero) all claim zero calories and they all contain erythritol (and stevia). That's why I was interested in your opinions!

Thanks again!

I take the "zero calorie" claims with a grain of salt. I think a lot of it is "creative" advertising. Like the spray butter that says zero cals per serving. Maybe so, but that little bottle has 900 cals total in it.

lc-chica 04-14-2013 02:31 PM

Yikes! Yeah, I noticed one of the bottles has 2.5 servings in it.... so 0 calories per each serving. The ingredients don't look bad though, I think it's mainly the erythritol :)
