I'm sorry you aren't feeling well - back problems are terrible.

I've had pretty good luck with physical therapy this second time around - we've been doing exercises to strengthen my core (abs, lower back, and gluts). This is coming from someone who is very active, but my core was seriously weak - and I had tried to strengthen them on my own!

When you are sitting in the car (I make a game out of it - stop lights, etc) hold your entire core (your transverse abdominis "TA" -google it) tight. You will have to focus on breathing whil you do this - it's difficult. You know it's tight when you can feel it engage - put your fingers right inside your hip bones. You can also feel it under your ribs. You want to pull your belly button to your spine.

Honestly, this exercise has helped me tremendously. I have bulging discs and hip issues, and this has helped somewhat. Is it perfect? No, but better than it was.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Budds for all the hugs, prayers, encouragement and good advice. I'm going to google the Svaroopa yoga and I'm trying to pull my belly button to my spine right now. Never thought of asking for a wheel chair at the airport, but that's something I'll think about. Walking is good for me but not walking while pulling heavy luggage. Gonna have to work all that out. Maybe curbside check in to get rid of it right off the bat.

Physical therapy is good because the focus is on strengthening the core and also on stretching, ever so gently, to deal with scar tissue.

The injury that put me in an ambulance in 2002 tore the muscles in my left lower back and abdomen and also ruptured a disc. According to my PT the scar tissue is what triggers muscle spasms and you never know when it's going to happen or what will set it off.

This is the first really bad bout I've had in a long time and I guess what triggered it was me working for hours to de-clutter and clean our garage. I thought I was being super careful, but a few of the things I moved and boxes I lifted were maybe not a good idea.

DH was out of town at a swim meet that weekend and two of my grandkids were here helping me in the garage.

OK, I'm rambling! Just wanted to pop in and say I'm still alive and am improving. On a scale of 1 to 10 my pain has gone from a screaming pain at level 15+ down to about a 6 right now. Every day it feels a bit better and I can move more.

I need to start packing for my trip. I plan to pack very light. Just a few comfortable outfits and I can do laundry whenever I want. I can also borrow clothes from my sisters!
