WOE: Judd
Start Date: 4-14-13
Hi I'm new. I have been lurking the past few days (to a week) and just decided to start Judd right away, so I started Sunday with a DD. I have gained weight this past year, and I'm soo frustrated. I am going on vacation next month, and was trying to lose SOMETHING. I did low-carb [which has worked for me in the past] for almost 3 weeks and lost MAYBE 2 lbs (jumping around between 1-2# loss) but gained it right back after a bad day. So I was planning on keeping on, but came across Judd and figured I'd jump in!

I am *hoping* to lose SOMETHING to keep me motivated within 4 weeks, which is when I leave for vacation. I can't help but think I must lose something. Hope so. Anyways Sunday was not bad at all, I was running on adrenaline / excitement over the diet. Then Sunday night I had a really bad headache, and went to bed, woke up Monday with it, and it lasted a while. However, I got through it. Today was another DD and it was not bad at all (the night isn't over yet) but I was pretty hungry before I ate my "dinner."

Usually if I feel this kind of hunger, I feel so obligated to feed that hunger, but for probably the first time ever, I realize it is OKAY to be hungry. I am still alive! Woo hoo!

What's really weird to me is that I feel totally fine - not light headed, not dizzy, no headache (for the most part except for that one night so far). When I do LC, or any eating plan really, there are times of day when I feel totally irritable HUNGRY, light headed, need to eat NOW. And I have not had that at all. So now I am wondering if that was partially mental all this time. I mean, I know hypoglycemic reactions are real but still... I am on glumetza for insulin resistance and PCOS, and that did help me to lose weight when I first went on it, but I have since gained it back

I have mainly been trying to eat lots of protein low cal foods (egg whites, protein shakes, lettuce, cucumbers with light dressing, 0% Greek yogurt). Things that keep me full with very few calories.

I am sticking to around 350-400 calories, it's been rough, but not so bad. I can't wait to eat tomorrow! LOL. But when tomorrow comes, I know I will feel like normal eating, not so "ravenous."

So I wanted to say hi! I am considering trying a potato hack DD one of these days. Sounds yummy, and if that will help my weight loss..

Also considering doing two DD's back to back b/c as of now my schedule puts me at a DD on Saturday, and I have plans and would really like that to be an UPD. Anything think this early on, I can manage a Thurs DD and Fri DD?? And Saturday UPD. What do ya think?

It seems like there's a ton of new people starting up right about now. Or is it just always like this? I don't mind, it's exciting!
Carly, you look so pretty in your Florida picture. I liked your other one too! All of y'all look so great, and everyone is so nice and friendly on here.
Hopefully I will start learning/remembering some names soon!
Yes, go ahead and use your 20% DD numbers. You can calculate that with your current weight, but try not to drop your UD numbers prematurely. If you are losing with your higher UD numbers keep using them. The bigger the swing the better.

Back to back DD are strongly discouraged. JUDDD works with eod UD/DD rotations. You can use a MD to switch your rotation if you need to. A MD =60% on the JUDDD calculator.

I dislike MDs and would probably prefer 2 UDs if rotations needed to be changed, but many JBs do fine with MDs now and then.

So on Day 4 and down 2.5 pounds. I'm almost back to my low of 153.5! So far so good! I do go to bed hungry at night, but I'm trying to just accept it and learn that my body will soon adjust.

I'm glad I'm counting on UDs because I didn't realize how many calories I was actually consuming. No wonder I was gaining weight. LOL!

By the way, what's "IF eating with a window." Is that where you try to not have any calories for certain period of time, or very few calories? Thanks!

IF = intermittent fasting. The window refers to a time limit within which you eat, as in "eating window". So, Fast 5, which is a recognised WOE, means you can eat what you like within a 5 hour period, say between 1pm and 6pm, or 4pm and 9pm. Women tend to do better with longer windows of maybe 6-8 hours.

I have a question about doing JUDDD for health reasons but not weight loss. My mom is interested in what I have been telling her about the health benefits of this WOE but she doesn't want to lose any weight. Would she still start out doing the 20% level (287 DD and 1433 UD) for induction? What level would she move to after induction to avoid weight loss but keep SIRT activated? 60%? She is 67 years young, 63 inches, weighs 128.

Thanks

5:2 is excellent for maintenance. Two 500 calorie days a week, and the rest as she usually eats. Lots of people doing 5:2 don't count on the regular days.

Lovely to see so many Newbies asking questions. Good answers here already, I agree with all the input.

Just want to say that this Lc-chicca is profound. :

We have a really valuable saying here on the JUDDD board, "Hunger is not an emergency."

Hello all JUDDDy Buddies! Ha ha ha -- I am in a silly mood today, must be DD euphoria. lol Just dropping in to say 'hey' to my fellow newbies. This is my fifth DD (started April 9) -- and I do think it's already gotten easier.

LC-chica: You are totally right about hunger not being an emergency -- it's ok to feel it, and yes, we totally live through it! lol It reminds me of a good friend of mine (male) who started off with a lot of weight to lose. He does not "believe in" low-carb eating (you NEED carbs for your body to function! you will DIE without carbs. That's the only thing your body can use for energy!!!) -- oh my goodness, I shake my head just thinking about him. If he gets the least bit hungry, he thinks he's going to go into a coma or something if he doesn't get to eat right away. He lost about 100 pounds on a typical WW-style diet, but now has gained it all back. It breaks my heart that he worked so hard, and the results were so short-lived.

Anyway, I digress -- that's just my long-winded way of agreeing that this WOE (no, way of LIFE) teaches you SO much about your body. I was also very surprised at what I need and what I DON'T. And, you know what -- I find I'm much more likely to workout on a DD than an up day (and I do DD's VLC) -- so, so much for our bodies only being able to use carbs for energy. Down Day's are still tough for me, and I still get the hungries -- but energy is NO problem -- I've got it to spare.

One of my co-workers asked me today, "Do you get to eat a piece of meat today?" I said, "I eat meat every day." She said, "What, 8 ounces?" I said no, about 2 oz on DDs. She said, "My body would go into shock!!" People really do fear being hungry, and I did too before JUDDD.

Hi Jeanette. You're doing really well so far!
Not counting on UDs is a big part of why I failed at JUDDD last year. Now that I'm keeping a close eye on the calories, I'm doing so much better this time around.

Yes, you are so right LibraryGirl (btw, I apologize if I've asked you before -- but are you a librarian? If so, high-five! I'm about half-way through my mls -- but am slacking at the moment... :P) -- people fear hunger a great deal. One thing I've learned is that there's not much to fear when I know I'm going to be eating whatever I want tomorrow! (well, within reason -- lol)

Kissa -- thanks! It also amused me that my friend's allotted daily calories on WW were roughly 2,000 per day, every day. I'm not going to even give him the details of what I'm doing now -- I don't have time for a 3-hour lecture. lol

kh155 -- I want to second that. I didn't count on the UD's on my first go-round, and my results weren't what I'd hoped they'd be. Now that I've seen how much it's helped so many people, I'm totally counting. It's not difficult to stay under the limit for me (yet! lol) -- but I just have to be mindful. I know I'd go over with bites, snacking and grazing if I wasn't watching it.

Jeanette, if you were using an eating window as your WOE, I guess it would be for every day.
I usually don't eat till dinner time on DDs but JUDDD allows me to be very flexible.

Deen, don't stay too far under your UD limit. JUDDD doesn't work that way.

It's making all the difference in the world!
I don't eat 'normally' and I go waaaaaay over if given enough rope. I really need limits.

Oh, no, don't worry -- I don't have that problem! I'm always AT the limit, or just under. In fact, last night I think I may have been over by a couple hundred calories (I blame the husband and his surprise Starbucks mocha he sprang on me that morning! :P). I think that without counting though, I was probably going FAR over each time and that's why I wasn't losing too quickly. I wasn't gaining, though -- so I'm looking forward to possibly not counting too much in maintenance.

It's the flexibility that's so wonderful about this WOL.
The last time I tried to be too rigid and set myself up to fail if I didn't meet my (incorrect) standards for how I should be doing the program.
It's so nice to be learning all the tricks to make this as relaxing as possible.

We have a really valuable saying here on the JUDDD board, "Hunger is not an emergency."
Thanks! This Judd forum is so supportive, I don't know what I'd do without it!

Judd is helping me to learn a lot about myself. The above statement is one of those things. It's amazing really.

I am down 5.4 lb today from my highest weight (was doing a short LC stint prior to starting this, and was off LC 2 days, so I used that weight). Even from my lowest weight during the LC, I am down 2.4 lb so I am totally happy with that. I will keep on! Once again, I feel good today, not "binge-y" which is great. And yesterday I wasn't dreaming of food as much as my DD's before. LOL.

So my weight looked like this, when starting Sunday 164.4. Today 159.0. The previous week, I saw 161.4 as my lowest. Today the scale fooled me with 154.4 at first (whoa) and I knew that wasn't right, so I stepped on a couple more times, to see 159.0 every time after!

I definitely feel like I have a lot of work still, to figure myself out, and make this work for me long-term, but I feel SO optimistic about it.

Hello JUDDD BUDDDs,

I have two questions today -

can SIRT be activated using the 5:2 method or is JUDDD induction the only way to make this happen?

on JUDDD induction do you have to do EOD rotations or would something like MWF DD, Tues-Thurs-Sat UD and Sunday MD work?

trying to make this as user-friendly for my DH as I can (I should mention that he's doing this only for the health benefits and not to lose weight)

Thanks!

Welcome Rosemary. Enjoy your JUDDD journey!

Chica, new decade already. Brilliant!!
Learning about yourself is definitely a major bonus with this WOE!

LiG, it's probably most certain if you use EOD - but people also presumably activate sirts doing 5:2. Hopefully someone else will know the scientific answer!
