It doesn't really bother me, but I guess it could be annoying on a hungry DD...

I suggest reading through the DD stickies on this forum. You will get so much helpful information from it. I rarely eat fruit on DDs because I have found it is not satisfying and not particularly low calorie. One apple is 80 calories!! When you're only eating 300-500 all day long, you get pretty picky about what you want to spend it on. I try to eat lean meats (measured), pickles, salad type veggies (cukes, celery, tomatoes), and sometimes cooked vegs such as squash, green beans, asparagus. Be sure to measure everything and go ahead and get a kitchen scale if you don't have one. It really helps to measure out fresh vegs and meats.

Cara,

This has been the most accurate way to get calorie counts that I can figure.
I use a food scale to weigh everything on DDs that is not prepackaged like celery, cucumbers, luttuce, etc.

I google "how many calories in an ounce of butter bliss lettuce and then multiply by the amount of ounces I want to eat. There is usually one site that I always use, but I don't know if I can say which, but you will pick a site or 2 that you trust.

I was resistant to weighing in the beginning and when I finally decided to, I learned I had been seriously cheating myself overall when I guessed a weight/sizes. 6 oz of celery is a lot of celery for 24 calories, but I was going with the rough estimate of 10 calories a stalk which would have meant 2 and a half stalks for 24 calories, but truly 6 ounces is a lot more that 2.5 stalks.

All that to say it's great to get a kitchen scale, weigh and get your calorie counts by the ounce, like "how many calories in 1 ounce of golden delicious apple?"

A question for the "Veterans" ...

Did you all start at the 500 calorie level or did you jump right in and go lower?
I'm wondering if it's a mind game and not a hunger game at the point of being under 500 calories. Really, could there be a difference in satiety in eating 300 & 500 calories?

I noticed that several of you don't eat more than 350 ish on DD but I'm wondering if you started doing that right out of the gate.

Thanks!

I've always stuck to around 300.
There seems to be a lot of mind game involved and how you deal with that varies from person to person.

kh, some did, some didn't (jump right in at 20%). Some have fasted completely since the beginning on DDs. It took me a LONG time to get down to my 20%, and then I still didn't consistently. I've been JUDDDing since Nov. and just now feel comfortable at 20% or a little lower (sometimes). As for the satiety difference between 300 and 500, I believe it's quite a lot. An extra 200 calories can feel extremely decadent, or sometimes, absolutely necessary.

I was under 500 from day one and I'm consistently around 250-300. I allow more if I need it, but rarely do. When I've gone on maintenance breaks and allowed myself up to 600 calories, it felt absolutely decadent and satisfying. Never, in a million years, would I have believed that, but it's true. There is a big difference between 300-600 calories.

I started with 500/2000 for the first two weeks and I am one of those that did the shakes. So much easier for me than trying to count calories of a bunch of food. Shakes were a non brainer and kept me from obsessing about eating.

Thank you very much for the replies!

I guess if I notice I'm not losing after the 2 weeks with 500, I'll tweak things from there.
2150 - 430 are the numbers I calculated from the JUDDD site using 20% but the 430 scared me and I went up to the 25% number which was 536.
It's only been 3 days with 1 UD and 2 DD and so far I'm down 4.2 lbs which is miraculous because I was dieting in the traditional sense for a month before getting back to JUDDD.
I don't want to over think this and I have a tendency to keep changing things before I ever give something a smidgeon of a chance.

Again, thanks for the answers to my question and I'll let you know how it goes!

I started at 500 and actually stayed there for close to 2 months! I don't know how, but I missed that you were supposed to do that just for the 2 week Induction. But I was losing very well, so no harm in my case.

That's good to know LCG. I guess I'll plug away with the 500 for the 2 weeks and take it from there.

I missed the part about the 2 week/ 500 calorie induction and just started with my then 380 kcal. After about 2 months or so I just dropped down to a bedtime snack that was between 90- 200 kcal.

I think there is a big difference between 300-500 especially if it's 200 calories worth of celery, lettuce, cucumbers, etc... that is a ton of volume for 200 calories. You may not notice a 200 calorie difference with cake or french fries, but your body knows the diffence.

If you have 10 DDs at 300 vs. 10 DDs at 500 that adds up over time.

Thanks, Carly and yes that all makes perfect sense.

Now that I've figured out that not eating until dinnertime has helped greatly in getting through the day, I'll try tweaking my meal with more volume with lots of veggies and subsequently less calories.

Your success with JUDDD is über inspiring!

The veggies helped tremendously before the appetite suppression kicked in. I love my kitchen scale to weigh out a heaping pile of lettuce if I'm really hungry or slicing a whole large cucumber (sorry Cindy) and soaking it in SF rice vinegar with pink Himalayan salt. That was a DD lifesaver early on. When the weather gets warmer I'm sure the cucumber in vinegar will be my bedtime snack again. Now it's just to chilly for me.

What's wrong with cucumbers? Or quick pickles? I like most any veggie pickled....

Cukes are one of the first things that come out of the garden, i eat 6 or 5 a day in JUne...i grow the mostly seedless types, and these snaky looking Armenians that are so crisp and sweet.

I will agree that most of the mass market cukes are over-ripe, bitter...with those big slimy seed cavities...I'm trying to help you out here, Cindy...are you up or down today....? I don't eat those either...ick.

I wouldn't eat a cuke much past pickling stage, anyway. Mine are almost like melons...

I went smilie-hunting last night...
