What got my losses going again

I wanted to share my recent experience with you all. This in no way is scientific evidence of anything, but purely my own anecdotal evidence of what's working for me.

The month of March has been a frustrating one for me. I ended February losing really well. Started March at 219. TOM came on the 5th, and I decided I would start my exercising that same week. I know TOM always stalls me, and starting to exercise does too, so I thought I'll never "see" the stall because I'm expecting it anyway. So on the 4th I started doing Callanetic for an hour, almost every day.

I expected to return to losing the next week. Nope. Up and down 2-3 pounds, but never eve got back to my March 1 low of 219 until the 15th, and then it went away and didn't return until the 26th, when I blew past it. I know 3 weeks in no way makes for a true stall, but I was working so hard for no reward and getting frustrated.

In late Feb and early March I had been struggling to keep my UDs in check, so I recalculated my UD and DD calories and decided it was time to lower them both. My losses hadn't slowed, I was just concerned about being careful. I believe now that it wasn't time to do that. Along with the new exercise, it stopped me.

My newly calculated calories are 395/1975. On the 23rd, I bit the bullet and decided I'd try to keep my DDs at or under 400, and I'd allow my UD calories to go to around 2200, since that was working before. Low and behold, a good drop!

I know this may not work for everyone, and it may not even continue to work for me long-term. But after having this happen 3 times since starting JUDDD, I'm a believer in the wide swing between DDs and UDs. I also firmly believe that keeping DDs lower can allow for slightly higher UDs, which is nice. I don't mind restricting a little more on days I am already restricting, and letting UDs feel not so restricted.

Sorry for the ramble. It's been on my mind, and I hope that it might help others shake things up and try something new if what you're doing doesn't seem to be working.

I was so frustrated this morning after a gain of 1.8 lbs since last Saturdays weigh in...I was pretty good this week...did have a bit of an uuad on weds though. I was eating whatever was w/in arms reach! I started drinking a new tea and I think it stimulated my appetite a bit? I was expecting to at least stay the same since my TOM ended a few days ago and I usually "deflate" pretty quickly. I will weigh again Sunday just out of curiosity and then I'm going to wait another week to find out. I will definitely keep my ud's under control from now on. My dd's have been ok...last night I had a bit of a crash so ended up eating a hb egg around 11pm. Today I had a couple mini donuts and coffee for bf which is only about 300 cals. Will have a slice of pizza for lunch (est. 500 cals..although that might be a bit much...) and some pasta and steamed beets with feta cheese for dinner. Probably not enough cals, but may have a bite of something sweet later to make up cals. Going to try and space my food out a bit on dd's from now on as well. A shake for bf, hb egg for snack, instant oatmeal for lunch and salad for dinner. (if I have enough cal space, I might add another hb egg for evening snack) This way I don't crash again. Lot's of tea and water as well. I'll figure this thing out...I'm sure of it!

**Also going to start exercising again, light cardio only...I was exercising like a mad person when I started but decided to stop for a few weeks while in induction to maximize losses....I've lost around 8 - 10 lbs in about 3 weeks, so now I feel comfortable getting back into it.

LCG, this was exactly my experience in WLM. The couple of times I lowered my UD calories before my loss slowed/stopped, I stalled. When I put them back where they were, they resumed.

That's not to say you'll NEVER have to lower the UD numbers. I always had to eventually (usually when I'd lost 25-30 pounds from the last "lowering"), but I really think you shouldn't mess with them if they're still working.

I'm so glad you shared that with us, LCG...I also believe it is that wide gap between calories from ud's to dd's that helped me get off of a stall...of course other things were involved for me..like too many carbs etc...I'm glad that you can exercise...about all I can do is walk ..and some days that's not very far..I'm not complaining about walking, I am so grateful that I can still walk...and I am so hoping for more improvement as I continue on with juddd...I think you're so right to point out that adjustments do need to be made from time to time..I didn't really understand that the first couple of months..but it sure does seem to be an important part of a long term, successful program..for a lot of people..I know some on here may not have had to adjust their calories a lot..seems like Dawn and Carly may not have had to, not sure..we are all different..I wish you continued success, it is so great to see and so encouraging.

This is so interesting!

I did the same thing! I went in to March super motivated and determined, recalculated my calories, AND started eating lower carb, which meant I got full and decided that eating under my up day calories by 200 or so was no big deal AND I exercised more. And my weight did not budge also for 2-3 weeks, which was really disappointing based on how hard I was trying. What got it going again was eating more on UP days. It seems counterintuitive, but it's worth a try if you're stalled.

Thanks so much for posting this LCG! I'm thinking maybe I lost this passed week too, but only the dr. weighed me, and I believe my scale is about 2# heavier! LOL! I sort of took a 'maintenance' break this week, in the very lightest use of the word! ..and did a 6:1 week.

Hmm, I think you might be onto something here. I lowered mine too and it seems like I've slowed down a lot more. I've been walking almost 3.3 miles everyday too. My UD num is like 1693 and today I finished at 1721 today. I'm going to try to have a good low DD tomorrow and Sunday (Easter) of course will definitely be a high UD so I'm curious what my body will do. Anyway, I think I'm going to experiment.

LCG, yep, same story here! It wasn't until some of the lovely JBs told me to go back to my original (higher) UD numbers and super low DD numbers that I've managed to drop down a few pounds again. I thought for sure I needed to lower them when I did because I'd lost quite a bit by then, but apparently I should not have! I'm glad things are moving down again for you sweetness!

Thanks for this great reminder LCG.

We are all inclined to think eating less will automatically drop the pounds but on JUDDD it is that gap between the up and down days that does the magic.

I never had to make an intentional point to lower UDs. It just seemed to happen as I was incapable of eating what I once could. I did lower DDs over time from my origional 380 to eventually just staying under 200. I guess for the occassional UDs that were a tad over the low DDs balanced it out. I'm trilled that you ladies are finding you can keep those UD numbers for longer. That is the beauty of juddd. We restrict eod, but on the UDs we can enjoy and still lose (or maintain if that is where your at).

How about up days, though? The good news is that if you were losing but lowered your up day calories and/or added exercise and stalled, try eating more on up days!

LCG, I think there is definitely truth to what you're saying. I weighed this morning after my DD and had lost .6 pounds! I know I prob had close to 3000 calories on Easter (the best I could figure). My DD yesterday was 100, but I was going to be grateful if I only gained a pound or so, but to have a loss is crazy!!! Crazy, but very cool! Yay!!!!!!!

Yeah, you're probably right, but I think "shock and awe" is what we're accomplishing with our Metab's. My body was probably thinking whoa what's going on here?! Our bodies are smart so I think our systems even catch on "so to speak" to the same calories EOD. Throw a whammie high day in there now and then may mix it up a bit. Anyway, appreciate the insight. It worked for me anyway. Don't think I'll continue having up days that high, but I know now if I get stuck what to try.

It seemed to work for me this past week too, LCG! Thank you again!

3 biggies for my JUDDD-life this week!!

1-I only weighed last Saturday morning after my Friday DD, then waited till this (saturday) morning after my Friday DD (I do 4:3) and saw a 2 1/2 pound loss! This is HUGE because I normally weigh every day, and am so obsessive about it and really let it stress me out! My DH who is also JUDDDing encouraged me in this direction and YAY!

2-NEW DECADE!!:-D

3-lower DD's and UD's back up a bit to where they used to be before I jumped the gun and changed my calories PLUS more controlled MD's that were actually MD's instead of UD's!

I'm so happy! Gonna go get my nails and toes done today! LCG you are my inspiration

Deb, I'm so glad this worked for you too! It's been a pet theory of mine for awhile, so why I let my calories get out of whack enough to stall me, I don't know. I'm just thrilled to keep more in my UDs any way I can and still lose.

Enjoy your weekend, and your pampering session mani/pedi! Are you by any chance going to have them done with shellac? I've been curious about trying that. The local beauty college will do it for $10, and I might get myself over there soon.

I am another that kept really low DD's to work with my UUAD's. Worked for me and continues to work in maintenance as long as I don't go too overboard on UD's. The wide difference in UD and DD is like a miracle to me. Course I am now experimenting with higher DD's in the form of potato DD's but that seems to be working too but I am in maintenance and really am not trying really hard to lose although I want to drop a few more pounds. Lots of options for us on JUDDD.

I had a shellac job on my nails at the local beauty college several months ago and it was awful! I went back within a couple of days and had it removed. I had it done there again yesterday and got a great job this time. Might wish to tell them you want someone who's good at it. I did mention my bad experience last time!

I love shellac nails! Get mine done all the time. I actually ended up buying the stuff to do it at home. Ended up spending what it costs to have mine done twice. There are no beauty colleges near me so that's not an option.
My nails were trashed before I started getting shellac last June. They now grow like weeds and are stronger (I still keep them shellac'ed) and hardly ever break.

I get gel manicures which may be the same thing. I love the gel. It never chips and I only go once every three weeks.

Carly, the woman who did my nails (gel) last weekend told me gel and shellac are the same I did not know this! I'm definitely going to try the beauty college next time! Gets very pricey the other way!
