Going to a southern style buffet! Woop woop! We usually cook a huge dinner, but canceled it this year in favor of eating out. First time we've done this on ANY holiday in the history of our family! LOL...still feels strange, but looking forward to it!

mom23kids 03-25-2013 07:44 AM

Doing our normal Sunday lunch at the in-laws: steaks on the grill, loaded salads, some kind of roll/bread and french fries :D Plus dessert, which changes every week. Then the following Saturday my side is coming to my house for a pizza Easter dinner

LoCarbGal 03-25-2013 07:57 AM

I'll be DDing it.

Actually, I'm kind of glad not to have yet another celebration day. I've had my share of them lately with family birthdays, etc. I think it'll be a good day to have one of my "egg days"!

Jbinme 03-25-2013 07:59 AM

Me too LCG! We can DD together:)

LoCarbGal 03-25-2013 08:17 AM

We go out for Easter Dinner about 50 percent of the time.I like to go out but the restaraunts here are sooo crowded its a 45 min wait just to get seated and another 45m to get your food:stars: so we chose eating at home this year

Bamboozled 03-25-2013 08:27 AM

Turkey, gravy, buns, mashed potatoes, broccoli and salad. We are not doing a big thing this year, just going to my mom's with my brother and our S.O's.

My brother is actually doing low carb too (I've got the whole family wanting to try it out!) so for once I won't be the only one eating "strangely".

And can I just say... I bought four young turkeys last night, they were $7 each! Love holiday time because I can fill my freezer lol.

Yennie 03-25-2013 08:42 AM

Kim, I am inviting myself over to your house!
we are going to have 1 of our home grown ham. It will be the first 1. It will just be me, my husband, the monkey, my dad and his wife. I don't know if we will be at our house or their house. And I don't know what side dishes. But I am excited to try our ham, everything else we've had from our pig has been fantastic.

hot-in-texas 03-25-2013 09:31 AM

wow, what a variety! Janette and LCG, you can have "Easter Egg day"!
That's a lootttt of food Kim, I think I'm gonna invite myself too! Sara, i like the idea of a pizza Easter:)

Jbinme 03-25-2013 09:35 AM

Great idea! I'm going to have eggs.
I am passing on the Easter candy this year-my favorite. I figure I can have it next year. So I only bought the kinds I don't like for my kids. Is that wrong?

KeirasMom 03-25-2013 10:56 AM

We don't usually do much for Easter. Sometimes we go to MIL's but she hasn't mentioned anything. We may just go to the casino. :D

zipp2play 03-25-2013 11:24 AM

Kim, Sara, Bamboo, I am so in for your spreads! All sound wonderful. We will do early service here and then head to DH's Dad's house. Have no clue what his wife will be making. I have asked DH to find out so we can bring stuff too. Me being Celiac always messes her up! I am hoping she leans toward appetizer type stuff. We all love that stuff! Then I will make some GF desserts!

LOL!!! That's too funny! at least Easter weekend is supposed to be nice around here (50s and no snow!)

I am going to try a weird experiment... because I am traveling to see family and friends I am going to limit my calories starting Friday evening in to Saturday (DD) until I meet up with friends for some drinks and snacks. Then will count my UD calories starting with that get together, combined with early easter dinner the next day and hopefully not eat more than my UD calories between the two gatherings. Am I being hopeful? :D

Luna Loca 03-25-2013 12:01 PM

Easter is a DD here.

Even if it wasn't, I don't think we'd do anything much. I've never really understood the big Easter dinner. Easter to me means eggs and candy, not so much the big meal.

Librarygirl 03-25-2013 01:15 PM

We never have done a big Easter meal either. It will be a DD for me anyway. Hope everyone who celebrates has a great one!

Traditionally, it's meant to be a feast after fasting during Lent.

Starting centuries before Dr. J. created JUDDD. ;)

Makes sense. I didn't grow up in any of the religious traditions that honor Lent, so no wonder I was ignorant of that. Interesting!

Librarygirl 03-25-2013 05:20 PM

I was ignorant of that as well. We always had a big dinner/lunch between church services on Easter Sunday when I was growing up (at the church), so it was never at home...I don't participate in any organized religion these days, and Easter will just be another day. :) I made have an egg day, as some others have mentioned, as a nod to Easter. ;)

We are eating out too! We also went to this place for Thanksgiving and they have great food. The best part is I don't have any dishes to do LOL The buffet will have ton of different foods so it will accomodate everyone's tastes. I really hate making a holiday meal and having to add/delete certain items that I want to make just because my guests are picky (ok, just my BIL in particular). He can eat what he wants at the buffet and I don't have to worry about it.

Evie1978 03-27-2013 07:28 AM

I'm looking forward to it. This place has EVERYTHING and then some. It's definitely shaping up to be a pretty serious uuad...so I'm going to try and be realllllly good Saturday and Monday to mitigate the damage I plan on doing Sunday. :) We have a bunch of celiac/dairy allergies/egg allergies/etc in my family so it can be frustrating trying to make the regular food for some and specialty food for others. Tossing all that to the wind this year and letting someone else do the cooking! Thankfully, myself nor my dd have any food allergies so it will be a free for all for the both of us!

JMBM 03-27-2013 08:08 AM

I think our menu will be..:

Smoked chicken
green beans
hash brown casserole
mac n cheese
Pink velvet cake

And a few other goodies I can't remember. lol:yummy::yummy::yummy:

hot-in-texas 03-27-2013 09:07 AM

I thought I posted this, but maybe i posted on the wrong thread!!
i will be making a coconut cake and hashbrown casserole(with sour cream mixed in, cheese and cornflakes on top, it's yumsters!)
The coconut cake is a 4 layer yellow cake and the frosting is coconut, cool whip, sugar and sour cream, and you frost between the layers and all over the cake and refrigerate fir 48 hours. It is the. best. thing. ever.

Jbinme 03-27-2013 09:26 AM

Don't read this thread on a DD!!

No JOKE!

Yennie 03-27-2013 02:26 PM

Finalized menu

*Honey-baked ham using our home-grown ham & organic apple blossom honey from the orchard in the next town over
*Hashbrown/potato cheesy casserole (the one with cornflakes on top)
*My favorite roquerfort pear salad (if you google "roquefort pear salad" I use the recipe that, for me, pops up first from the allrecipes website. If you make it, make extra candied pecans because they are AWESOME!!)
*Some additional veggie side dish my dad is bringing
*Jalapeno bread I posted about in the "crave spicy food" thread
*Red Velvet Cake

Funny thing about the red velvet cake...been searching and searching and searching for a decent home made RVC recipe. Everything I've made tastes like nothing, and I've never had a home made RVC anything that tasted like I think RVC should taste. So this will be an experiment. What I'd really like to find is a knockoff of the Cheesecake Factory's RV Cheesecake - oh lord!!! If you like RVC, you MUST have a piece of that stuff!

Anyway, I'll report back on the RVC...
