Fast Diet vs 5:2

My personal opinion is they are the same but different. This article Fast Diet indicates 5 "eat-whatever" days, then 2 "fasting" days in a row. I believe most of us doing 5:2 have a couple days between the "fasting" days. I could not do 2 "fasting" days in a row and feel good either.

Quote:
The Fast Diet was published in January and has quickly become the go-to diet for all of Britain’s weight-loss hungry. According to authors Michael Mosley, M.D. and Mimi Spencer, you can eat whatever you want five days a week and lose 20 pounds. Who wouldn't bite? For the other two days a week, you are limited to 500 calories a day. But still, sounds like the dream diet!

Only, nobody seems to acknowledge that during those 500-calorie days, you probably won’t be doing much of anything except sleeping. You’ll be light-headed, anxious, shaky, dizzy and super tired -- Imagine what you are like when you eat lunch late and multiply that by 100. You definitely shouldn't drive, operate machinery, take care of young children, perform surgery or basically anything else that might put yourself and others at risk. You might pass out! And even if you don’t, your body doesn't have enough energy (calories) to let your body function properly.

When you deprive yourself of calories or nutrients, you throw a wrench into the turning wheels of your cell processes and metabolism functions.

“The Fast Diet's premise of eating and drinking whatever you want for five days and then followed by two days of fasting may sound euphoric but it probably is not healthy for anyone; especially from an emotional and behavioral standpoint,” said Rose Green, R.D.

Further, these "fasters" are ignoring what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, which is being at peace with your activity level and creating a synergy between the way you think, feel and react to their food choices -- on a daily basis; always; not just twice a week.

Green adds, “It is crucial for anyone serious about shedding excess pounds to develop a sensible eating lifestyle and to change one's self destructive eating habits. Fad diets like this one never will help you achieve permanent weight loss, since you really have not learned to create new healthy eating patterns.”

What’s worse: If you don’t consume enough calories over the five “eat whatever you want” days, the body may go into ketosis from lack of carbs (causing bad breath) or starvation mode, which is when the human body begins to slow metabolism and hoard fat. So while the British are kissing their water-weight goodbye with smelly breath, they run the risk of storing the fat they are so desperately trying to lose.

That’s not even counting all the unhealthy fats, carbs and calories the fasters must consume on their eat-whatever days. Let’s be honest here. Who chooses the salad with dressing on the side when they are at a buffet? Dr. Mosley was eating a cookie during his New York Times interview. What diet condones cookie eating?

Britain’s National Health Service isn't buying into the trend so quickly either. They listed their warnings of negative side effects the same week the book came out.

Watch out America. Before you buy into the hype, believe the risks. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

They are the same thing-the author of the book, 5:2, wrote it after watching Dr. Mosley's BBC documentary last year. The Fast Diet book is written by Dr. Mosley and just came out.

Just read the above article excerpt and it's so wrong it's kind of funny-many of us experience the opposite of tiredness on our DDs and have crazy energy lol. A very misinformed and ignorant article.

Just a horrible, misinformed article

If you want to see what lazy journalism looks like, look no further. This article reads like a mismash of "dire warnings" from various diets, all cobbled together. For the record, today is a fast day for me. I'm about 21 hours into today's fast and at lunch (3 hours ago), I ran at the park at a 7:30 per mile pace.

"You’ll be light-headed, anxious, shaky, dizzy and super tired"... not even close. I feel absolutely wonderful.

Oh lawdy! Tripe.

“It is crucial for anyone serious about shedding excess pounds to develop a sensible eating lifestyle and to change one's self destructive eating habits. Fad diets like this one never will help you achieve permanent weight loss, since you really have not learned to create new healthy eating patterns.”

Um, I'm pretty sure my 118 pounds are gone permanently, and if they aren't, I'll throw a couple of extra fasting days in there to ensure they do stay gone.

I love how they cite that Dr. Mosley was eating a cookie during the interview.

Ridiculous! I still laugh about how, when years ago I lost 94 pounds on Atkins people would tell me everything you lose on LC is water weight. Yeah, okay, maybe the first 5-10 pounds. I'll give you that. But what about the other 84!?!?!

Lazy is right. But we know better, don't we?

Nonsense!!! He actually implies that you eat for 5 days and than have 2 fasting days. That's not what 5:2 is all about.

Totally agree with Dawn, I'm sure the 74 pounds I lost is lost for good. I have never been as energetic and full of life as I have been since juddding!

That's the silliest thing I've read in a long time! The funniest part was "what diet condones eating cookies?" People who read it will probably take it to heart if they've never tried fasting, so this kind of lazy, uninformed, unresearched type of journalism is dangerous.

Today ended up being my lowest DD yet, due to sick kids, an impromptou race to the pediatrician before they closed, getting an rx filled etc.etc. I just haven't had time to think about food. My calorie total for the day is 300 and I've got so much energy, it's ridiculous. I literally could not stand still in the pharmacy line and my foot was tapping like crazy-my dd kept asking me what was wrong with me lol. And I normally have several glasses of diet soda a day for the caffeine and today I only had one this morning at 7am.
That is the JUDDD magic in action

Thank you Kelly for posting this review! It is so easy when you alternate day fast for a year to forget how some others might see this lifestyle. I love how I feel with fast days and can't imagine going back to feeling sluggish, overweight and hungry trying to diet all the time.
Everyone's comments just cracked me up too! Thanks for lightening my day this was so funny! love the definitely shouldn't do list...
Also the 84 pounds of water weight lost on LC! (Congratulations on losing 94 pounds of extra weight on low carb LCG!) Some people just don't know what they are talking about obviously.

Yes, babs, just lovely!

As for the article, sadly, it doesn't surprise me. I posted before that I saw a lot of IF bashing at another online site when I first found JUDDD. I felt horrible for the gal that had posted how much she loved it. (and sent her a PM about it, in fact) I wonder if she's over here? I don't think so...I should ask. ANYHOO, hopefully there will be more proponents of the plan coming out now and more POSITIVE media!

Thanks everyone on the complements on the avi. I have been feeling really good lately and just so happy that I can maintain my weight and focus on other parts of my life now. I am happy we have found IF and know that it is truly great and healthy. I think I will be a bit cautious when sharing my stay slim methods to others. Most people I know assume it is my running that is keeping me trim. Not so!
(I also run on fast days and no passing out happening here, just a faster runner without the extra weight on me)
