Glucomannan anyone?

So, the manager at my local vitamin shoppe recommended that I give glucomannan a shot to help ease the hunger and keep me feeling full longer. I must admit that I took one earlier, then two with lunch and it's now almost 4:30 and while I just started to feel a bit peckish, it's manageable. My question is, does this supplement adversely affect weight loss with this particular WOE? I've heard good things about it helping with weight loss even w/out dieting, but I'm not sure if it will be metabolized differently while juddding...I will take 3 with dinner to get me through the evening....(supposed to take 3 with each meal but I wanted to work up to it because it is my first day on it...so far so good)

BTW: I bought it in the capsule form and mix it with 2 tbsp of unsweetened applesauce..there is a danger of the pill swelling up in your throat and choking you lol so I decided to try it this way instead...yes, I count in those calories...haha)

Funny, I have been reading up on that today! I am curious too.

JUDDers love gluc powder! There are whole threads devoted to recipes for puddings and all kinds of yummy things. It works great in protein shakes! They taste like milk shakes.

I get my glucomannan powder from netrition.

Here is my newest favorite shake recipe:

Pour 1 container of Muscle Milk Light (chocolate) into blender
Add half cup fat free, Lactose Free milk
Add half scoop (45 calories worth) of Whey Protein Isolate
Add 1 teaspoon Gluc powder
Add crushed ice last
Blend on high until thick and frosty

It's like a milk shake! So yummy.

Oh, I forgot I was gonna add calories and protein break down:

Muscle Milk Light - 100 calories 15 grams of protein
FF, LF milk 45 cal. 5 gr protein
Whey protein 45 cal. 10 gr protein

Evie1978 03-08-2013 01:56 PM

Thanks! I just started today but taking it in capsule form...breaking it into applesauce..lol...vitamin shoppe doesnt have the powder..besides online anyone know where i can purchase some?

Yam-Yam 03-08-2013 02:09 PM

I would check at stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, I've never looked in drug stores or regular grocery stores. It's so convenient to buy things on line. I live way out in the boonies, so there's not much shopping available here. We have a really small Mom and Pop grocery store and that's it.

Oh yeah, click on this link: glucomannan powder so you can see what the package looks like. Maybe that will help when you are looking for it in a store.

Yam-Yam 03-08-2013 02:12 PM

Dang! That link took me to the pills.

Here's the right link:

Konjac Foods Konjac Glucomannan Powder

There are tons of ideas here.

I've only found it through Netrition or on-line. I shop at WF and TJ's and have never seen it at either place.

Carly 03-08-2013 02:43 PM

I love using netrition. It's a flat shipping fee and everything comes super-fast.

I get lots of things in each order so for me it's worth it.

Evie1978 03-08-2013 02:57 PM

Thanks Carly...I will definitely check it out!

i just bought some last week and take the capsules in capsule form but with lots of water

Librarygirl 03-08-2013 04:41 PM

I can only find it in capsule form here, and all the health food stores have never heard of it in powder form. I think netrition may be the way to go. :)

Missouri_Librarian 03-08-2013 05:30 PM

oh i will,.....thank you...i LOVE dumplings...matter of fact it was just the 2 of us for christmas dinner and that was what i made chicken and dumplings, love love love that meal

Librarygirl 03-08-2013 06:04 PM

Only 7 calories per dumpling! I can see these in my future (DDs).

SlowSure 03-09-2013 04:25 AM

Those dumplings are good in Thai-style broths (fish stock/Tom Yum paste with added kaffir lime leaves and maybe lemongrass and then Holy Basil or coriander/cilantro as the herb in the dumpling). I tend to make dumplings a bit smaller for the Thai-style soup (40-70 out of that mix).

For me, the dumplings also work well if poached in some apple juice and cinnamon, and then served with apple sauce.
