Have any of you had WLS?

I had lapband over a year ago and well either it didn't work, or I didn't work it.

Anyone else have WLS?

Wow! that's amazing. I lost 15 pounds pre surgery, but that was it. I can eat whatever and have no restriction.

That is very strange...What does your doctor say about it? Were you restricted to liquids at the beginning? Do you get regular "fills"?

We moved 8 hours away and don't have a WL doctor in town. We do have a fill clinic. I got 2 fills so I am at like 3.5 cc in a 10cc band. Still no restriction. I know I could keep getting fills, but I didn't want to waste the money seeing as we just started trying for a baby. But now we've put it off for a couple of months so I can lose weight. I hate to spend the money on the fill and then have it all taken out.

I guess it could still work, but man I feel like I am FAR from having any restriction from the band.

I was on a liquid diet at first. I think 2 weeks? Then slowly added mushy food and then onto regular about 6-8 weeks out. I lost a little after, but not a ton.

I, too find this a bit off. Several of my clients have had the same procedure as you and they tell me that they can't eat whatever they want, especially fats, it's too filling if they try to eat as they use to and it also makes them feel sick.

I will say one of my client's lap band didn't take and she had to go back again. Maybe something to look into.

From what my nutritionist said, I need more fills, which lead me to say maybe I haven't worked it. I can seriously eat whatever. OCCASIONALLY I'll get steak stuck if I don't chew really well, but there is no restriction.

Maybe I didn't give it the chance I should have? But with fills $200 a pop and having to get up to 8-10, I was discouraged when the first two did nothing

My SIL had it done a few years ago. She has lost about 130#. Her experience sounds a lot like what you describe seeing with your clients, Beeb.

Kelly, I hate to see that you have gone through all of that for nothing. I would keep trying the fills. Any chance you could go back and see your original doctor?

I hadn't thought about that. We are going to be going to visit family in May, so I could probably go then. AND my fills are free there. HOWEVER, we may be pregnant then. But if not, I wouldn't mind getting the free fill even if I have to pay here to have it drained.

Oh, ok. Thanks for that info. Gee, I hope your saline is not leaking out of the lap band. That was the first thought I had when you explained what a fill is. Can it leak out? If it did the band would stretch, right?

When I had my last fill, they check for leaks and he said I was good. I've never had restriction so I assume the leaking or lack thereof is ok. BUT that is a possibility of the band. They gave me a check list of things that would happen if something were wrong like the band slipping or a leak and nothing has happened. I think I just assumed I would get the band, eat less food, lose weight. I think maybe I was really wrong.

You have really gotten me interested in this and so I did a Google search. I just read an interesting article: LapBand Leaks: What You Should Know - Arturo Rodriguez , MD

One of the signs of a leak is that you feel no restriction. It says that one way a leak can occur is a needle puncture during the surgery.

Just seems to me that you should be really feeling restriction when you eat because that's the effect it's supposed to have. What a bummer that you have gone through all this expense and all this suffering and then you don't lose weight. That makes me sad.

It makes me sad too. It was NOT cheap and obviously major surgery. I'll have them check it again for a leak, but last time was ok. I posted on the WLS board too to see if anyone had any wisdom.

What are the ramifications of pregnancy? Do you have to have it removed? I would only assume that they would drain it, perhaps entirely, but does it have to come out? My SIL has no kids and doesn't want any, so I am not familiar with this aspect at all.

No removal, just have to have it drained so you can eat adequately. Honestly my only concern with that is the cost. I hate to pay $200 and then have to pay another $200 to have it drained in a month.

If money were no object...

$200 for a fill? That's a lot! I had no idea it was that much...WOW! Yeah, the eight hour drive would almost be cheaper, even with gas like it is!

Too bad it's not DIY!!

Yeah and you really may need it multiple times. WE LOVE where we live, but that's the downside of leaving, my fills would have been free for a while

Yeah, that stinks, but I would definitely go see the oringinal MD. Of course by May you may not need it if you keep working JUDDD. And you will get the additional health benefits of fasting! I wish you luck. Unfortunately I seem to have more questions than answers!
