What a shock Tanya, for both of you. He will do fine but it is horrible when our children fall ill.

Silver lining: Not now, but when he's older, he can make jokes about the 'weight' of his equipment being too much. But yikes, I would think any teenage boy would be freaked about having to have surgery there. Good thoughts coming your way.

Tanya, glad you're less freaked out today. I'm sure all will be fine.

Many years ago, my DS was rushed into hospital with a suspected torsion - it's a bit like a hernia. The nurses were expecting a huge rugby player on the operating table. Instead they found a six-week old baby!
Fortunately, they discovered he just had a minor infection, so he was fine. The surgery wound didn't bother him, even in nappies it healed fast.

My freaking out now is the fact that his doctors appointment for the general surgeon is monday at 9am.....but we are getting a snow storm sunday into monday. They keep changing the totals and now we are in the 4-6. Doesnt seem that bad except we are kinda in the mountains in our area and if they call for 4-6 we will get 6-8 or more! I have 4wd but its a 45 min drive on a good day!!! ekkkk!!

I always write down the date I can first open the windows...

Last year it was March 12!!!
This winter is definitely dragging its butt!!!

Our windows are still wrapped in plastic, we have a fire going and it's supposed to get down to 25 degrees tonight!!!
Forecast for the coming week is 40-48 highs and 30-33 lows.
Not horrific, but doesn't look like open windows any time soon.

Yes, it was super warm early last year. (I LOVED it...although the farmers did not!)

Oooh, Katie, my favorite thing to do in warm weather is sit out on the patio with DH & sip on margaritas. I can't WAIT! In fact, I will be doing it next week in Disney!!! I may have to not eat while there, but dangit, I WILL be drinking margaritas! A gal's gotta have her priorities! LOL

Good morning JB's. I couldn't sleep this morning and could only fantasize about HWC and coffee, so I got up and made a pot. We're having a freakish thunderstorm with lightening right now. I hadn't seen a weather report and thought it would be nice today. So much for that!

I worked all day in the house yesterday cleaning and doing laundry. I should do a thorough clean every weekend, but alas I do not (I do laundry every week though lol)...So, it's nice to have a clean house and be able to relax today on my last day off of the weekend. Plus it's a UD. However, one thing is bothering me...my cat. He has begun spraying neurotically on everything recently. I can walk behind him and he will stop and spray the wall, the fridge, the dishwasher, you name it. It is disgusting to me. I was on my hands and knees cleaning places I had missed yesterday, including higher places (seems he climbs on the washing machine and sprays the back of the laundry room door!)...anyway, last night I was on my clean bed with washed comforter and everything, and he jumped up beside me and sprayed ME!!! Ugh!! I am getting him to the vet pronto and I'm not sure why we have waited so long to have him neutered. I have read that it may not solve the problem, but here's hoping. He loves me to death and always follows me around and climbs up on me in the bed. I used to think it was adorable, but now I don't want him in the house!!! I really hope the neutering will stop this.

My males get neutered before they ever spray. So sorry you have this problem.

The snow here is mad.

Good luck with your journey on Monday Tanya. X

I've never had a male cat, and only just owned a cat ever when bf moved in with me, so I was "christened" properly last night.

LG-I'm glad you're taking him to the vet. Cat urine, especially from a boy, is potent stuff, indeed! My make cat started to go in inappropriate places and it was due to a urinary tract infection. I hope you get it resolved soon....that smell is tough to get out. Plus, I believe he will be a more content cat having any issues taken care of. Good luck!

Cindy,
Yes, neuter. It will help, but not totally eliminate (ha ha) the problem in SOME cats.
Clean clean clean clean clean!!! My favorite cat pee product is called "Anti-Icky Poo". It's an enzyme based cleaner and works so much better than the chemical stuff. Good lord who named that, it embarrasses me to tell people the name of that stuff but its the best. If you've already cleaned some of the surfaces with chemical based cleaners, totally saturate them with water and allow the water to evaporate. It may take 48-72 hours but let it - it will remove all the chemicals. The residual chemicals will inactivate the enzymes in the AIP rendering it inactive.

Get a black light, cat urine floreses (glows - I'm sure I didn't spell that right) under black light. If you can see it, he can smell it and smelling it tells him its ok to pee there again.

Usually when they pee/mark/spray in front of you, there may be signs of a problem other than just the hormones so insist on a urine test when you take him in. Also, whether there is a UTI or its just hormones, don't ignore the behavior component just because he's neutered and/or on antibiotics. Cats who start peeing outside the box, whether its marking or just wetting, will often develop a substrate preference and keep peeing in the wrong spot even after the primary medical problem is addressed.

If you're new-ish to the house its possible he has an anxiety disorder. Some people like Feliway for anxiety, you can get it over the counter. It gets about 50/50 good reviews for reducing anxiety in elimination/marking disorders which says to me that its effective in about 50% of cats. Its not cheap but its cheaper than having him on long term anti-anxiety meds (pilling a cat anyone?) or repeatedly cleaning and cleaning and cleaning.

If you want some help with some behavior modification once you've dealt with his medical problems, PM me, I'd be happy to help. Or be sure to choose a vet who has some experience actually treating cats with elimination problems to have a reasonable conversation with.

Or, best case scenario, he has his "brain surgery" and it all stops!!!

Cindy,

We tried the Feliway when we brought our cats together since they were all stressed and not getting along. The feliway didn't help it, but over the years they all agreed to get along most of the time. I hope the "brain" surgery does the trick

Just catching up on this thread, lots to catch up on!
katiebubb I'm glad you are feeling better about the surgery thing, I totally understand the anxiety being the mother of a son. For me the anxiety started on the day he was born, and they took him out of my arms to take him for his circumcision, what a helpless feeling. It will be OK, poor thing, that must be scary for him
keurig I was offered one by my parents to Christmas, but the practical side of me turned it down. Sometimes I would love to have one though.
LG. Sorry about your christening that does not sound like fun at all. Hope it gets worked out and he can become a cutie again
joy joy, sounds so interesting what you are doing, how awesome too be able to be creative like that
katiebubb and flutter barbecue, beer, back porch and margaritas...you girls are singing my song!
PJ I hope you get to fling those windows open soon!
