I always want more than one cup, so I doubt I would want a one-cup coffee maker, plus I don't know where to get these off-brand less expensive coffee cups. The ones in the store are outrageous! I just use a percolator type coffee pot and it works fine. I'm thinking of getting a French Press though.

It's great for our family because DH and I like a variety of coffees and Keira can brew her own hot chocolate or cider without me having to worry about her using the stove. The couple of teas I've tried have been really good too!

I loveeee my Keurig! I got the reusable filters so I now can use my loose tea with it also. I am the only one who drinks coffee in my house so I can just make a cup whenever I want. On the weekends I sometimes use the regular coffee pot if I know i'm going to want more than 2 cups (especially if it's a DD LOL).

Does the loose tea brew well? I'm more concerned about the lack of steeping.

Hi Kristen! I'm glad things are going well!

We have a Keurig at both of my offices, but at home just a plain old coffee pot.
I'd like a Keurig and a soda stream!

I have tried 2 teas so far in the Keurig and both came out fine by my standards. I figured it was worth a try so I bought a pack of 4 reusable filters and use the red ones for tea and the black ones for coffee.

I have a Cafetiere (French Press), Aeropress and a Handpresso. No such thing as over-caffeination The latter 2 are particularly useful for making a brew that's strong enough to be made into a decent coffee granita.

LibraryGirl - we're very fond of granita. I've given the recipes in metric and imperial measurements.

Granita 1

600ml/20fl oz strong, hot espresso coffee
120g/4oz caster sugar (I use same weight of Sukrin, a powdered erythritol/stevia blend)

To serve (on UDs or for non-weight loss people)
300ml/10fl oz double cream (heavy? It's 44-46% fat)
1 vanilla pod, split lengthway, seeds scraped out (or a very good extract, to taste)
1 tbsp icing sugar (superfine sugar?)
handful of crushed ice

(on DDs or if you're having this regularly)
300ml/10fl oz of vanilla/hazelnut/cardamom protein fluff (same method as protein fluff, just use extracts to flavour or a SF syrup)

Method
Place a suitable shallow dish/container (approx. 1L/35fl oz capacity) into the freezer.

Stir and dissolve sugar/substitute into your hot coffee (you may need to return it to a low heat). Set aside to cool.

Pour your coffee mix into the pre-chilled dish and freeze for approx. 40 minutes. Check to see if ice crystals are forming around the sides (they should be, if not, leave for another 10-15mins and check again). If there are crystals, use a fork to bring them into the unfrozen, still liquid centre (don't mash the crystals). Return your granita to the freezer.
Check again in approx. 20 minutes and repeat the 'fork the crystals to the centre' process.
Repeat this at regular intervals until the granita is a mass of coffee crystals and there is no free liquid. Once the granita is in this condition, scrape it into a plastic, lidded box and store in the freezer until needed (unless you're eating it at once). If you do store it, you may need to take it from the freezer and put it into the fridge 20mins before you want to eat it. Break up the ice with a fork but don't mash it smooth because it's supposed to be in crystal/flake form.

NB Freezing time varies enormously with models of freezer and the weather. Some freezers take 1 hr to form ice-crystals round the edges, others take 2-3hrs. Sometimes the granita is finished within another 2 hrs, or it can take longer to freeze and a bit more forking through.

To serve
Pre-chill the large bowl in which you'll whip the cream.
Place the cream, vanilla seeds/extract and icing (superfine) sugar in the pre-chilled bowl. Add a handful of crushed ice and whip the mixture until a dropping consistency.

Or - make up and flavour a protein fluff that works well with coffee. We like amaretto, hazelnut or vanilla.

Serve the granita in pre-chilled glasses/coffee cups topped with the whipped cream/protein fluff mixture.

Granita 2

This is a less-sweet granita that is given additional sweetness/punch by the very intense syrup that is drizzled over it.

Granita

1 litre/35fl oz very good, strong, black coffee (espresso)
4 tbsp caster sugar (or substitute sweetener, to taste)

For the syrup

75g/3oz ground coffee
50g/2oz caster sugar
300ml/10fl oz water

To serve

150ml/5fl oz double cream (heavy?) or protein fluff (as above)

Method

Pre-chill a shallow dish/container of suitable capacity in the freezer.

Dissolve the sugar/sweetener completely in the hot coffee (gently re-heat if necessary) and proceed as for Granita 1.

Coffee syrup

Place the sugar/sweetener and water in a saucepan and reduce to a simple syrup consistency. (Sometimes, this only works with sugar, not all sweeteners - if somebody wants the SF version, they might be better off with one of the syrups with which they're familiar.)
Add the coffee and simmer gently for 10mins (I don't like the taste of boiled coffee - but some people would add the coffee at the outset, while the syrup is reducing. YMMV.)
Pass the syrup through a very fine sieve (to remove the coffee grounds) and leave to cool. (This syrup keeps well in the fridge, and can be drizzled over ice-cream, cake, a square of chocolate etc..)

The cream isn't sweetened for this more bitter version. Simply whip the cream to the soft peak stage. Spoon the granita into a pre-chilled glass/cup, place a spoonful of cream/protein fluff on top, and drizzle over a teaspoonful of syrup.

We keep buying the jugs of water but hubby said it was to expensive so we bought an awesome water filter for our sink. But wasn't good enough for the keriug. He said if I didn't drink coffee 24/7 buying water wouldn't of been a prob! Lol!

Hi Kristin! So glad you popped in and that you're having a full life right now!

A few weeks ago my drip coffee machine died and I immediately ordered another one. Why didn't it even occur to me to get a Keurig???? Duh!

Kim, most folks who come over from lc take a little longer to get into the (literal) "swing", back and forth, of JUDDD, because of adding in some carbs again.

It appears to me you've lost 1.5 in 9 days even though you did come from lc, and I'd say that's respectable. You never know, there could be a whoosh in your March future yet!

Kristin, how was it seeing yourself in the movies? I remember you had been an extra (or more) in 2, and I think you got to go to cast parties, perhaps? When you saw yourself on the screen, were you brilliant?

Yennie, wow on the size of turkey eggs! Did not know that.

I've been fortunate. I've had mine for 3 years and have never even used filtered water, just tap water! We run vinegar through it from time to time to clean it out.

My baby had surgery when she was 2, so I totally understand. I was a mess. Let yourself feel however you feel, but know that it's going to be just fine, despite your worrying.

thank you!! I was just shocked about the surgery thing.......I had a million questions but I do love his general doctor so he answered and I feel so much better. I was worried about things like.....will he lose his...you know...will it effect the ablility to have kids...you know things like that...His doc assured me that it happens to more men than you think that they just dont announce it from roof tops. He beleives my son will be fine, sore but fine. Thats good! I did learn this type of hernia is a family gene type of thing, so somewhere along the line other family members have had this issue and have not shouted it either! Hes more worried about the kids at school finding out because of gym class and that. I told him to just point to his belly button and say I have a hernia......they dont need to know the pin point location!

I guess this happened in gym class when they were lifting weights today. My son said the gym teacher was pretty cool and discrect (sp?) about it.
