WOE: JUDDDD

6 months on JUDDD – A Thank You

How to lose real FAT.

OK, so this is a bit long. Please bear with me.
Having read and re-digested the recent update to Kate Harrison's 5:2 Diet Book, I've been playing with some numbers and I've had a revelation!

I'm elderly-ish and not very active so, according to various internet calculators, in order to make it from bed to the couch to the kitchen and back to bed, (with a few trips to the loo and back thrown in), I need 1358cals Daily Calorie Requirement.
DCR x 7 = 9506cals minimum required per week in order to function.

However, in order to lose one pound of fat per week, we need to have a calorie deficit of 3,500cals per week.
9506 – 3500 = 6006 total weekly cals max intake, for me to lose 1lb per week.

That's not a lot of calories per week!

I cross-checked with Dr Johnson, whose calculator allows me a slightly more generous 6230cals per week, so I'll go with that, thanks Dr J.

Now if I were to be doing a bog standard calorie restricted diet (no thanks!!), it would allow me only 890 calories per day in order to lose one pound per week. That would put me only 3276 in deficit, so I'm going to only just manage to lose that pound if I stay within my daily calorie allowances.

Eating only 890cals day in and day out doesn't bear thinking about!

Fortunately, with JUDDD we divide the calories between UDs and DDs, so officially I have 297cal DDs and 1483cal UDs which I magnanimously round up to 300 and 1500. Sticking to these numbers is evidently how I managed to lose one pound per week steadily, when I could keep to strict rotations within my allowances - and explains why I only maintain when I can't.

So that's it in old fashioned calories-in-calorie-out terms but of course we have the added ingredient: JUDDD MAGIC!

Trust me, I'm not a scientist and was never any good with numbers. However, these do suggest to me why so many of us see differences in clothes size and fit, while the scales are adamantly refusing to budge. It's because when we stick with our numbers, we lose real genuine FAT and the water weight fluctuation is to do with everything else that's going on in our busy little bods, from inflammation, to hormones, to last night's salty crisp-eating frenzy.

Which brings me to the health benefits of JUDDD:
We know that JUDDD triggers changes in the body which lead to alleviated arthritis, asthma, improved blood readings, brain function, energy levels, etc etc….. it's a long list.

However, reading your posts on this forum tells me that a major benefit is emotional and psychological, through what we learn about ourselves: Facing our fears; our hangups; our compulsion to stuff food into ourselves as compensation, defiance, or self-punishment. I've seen awe-inspiring emotional growth here, just in the few months I've been JUDDDing. I've seen people come to terms with their own excuses and stride forward into a different relationship with themselves and their lives.

My first DD was August 27th last year and it's been an amazing journey so far. I've never lost weight so easily before. I've never lost weight while liberally celebrating family members' successes, a wedding, plus Christmas. All in the middle of a very hectic time when my food choices would have given a dietician apoplexy!

I've never lost weight before, while coping so easily with my tendency to self-sabotage, rebel or procrastinate. So not just belly fat but the fat head is diminishing too!

Yes it's been slow but the fat has gone - and I know how to keep it from returning, which means my heart and my pancreas are more likely to stay friends with me.

I'm astounded how long I can now go without eating. A few years ago, I realised I had a leptin problem because I literally felt famished a couple of hours after eating. I cured that with the help of the Richards' book Mastering Leptin but, though no longer chronically hungry, I still needed to eat every four hours and I was still overweight. JUDDD has presumably healed my metabolism further and it's incredibly liberating.

I want to thank all the JUDDD BUDDDs for being here, for sharing your journeys and for your support.
Thank you the veteran JUDDDers for setting such an inspiring example.

I know that putting my daily entry on the the weigh-in page has helped to keep me accountable because after my non-JUDDDing week away - which followed two weeks of not JUDDDing while at home - I nearly let it all go. But only nearly! I'm so glad you were all still here, still keeping on. Thank you!

What a lovely post, FlossyLiz! I'm so glad you're here with us. You and I started at almost the same time, I'm about a week behind you I think.

You touched on so many points that ring true for me. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings.

I especially like your line about "not only belly fat, but fat head getting smaller" Ha! Ain't that the truth!

I also am elder-ish (73) and my daily stats 500/1500 same as you. I recently lost my husband and just came back to the forum to begin again. So you have been losing a pound a week? That is sooooo acceptable to me and I hope I can do the same. Please share with me what else you think will help me.

10 pounds in one day! Now I could get behind that kind of new math/rose-tinted glasses.

Heart warming post thank you for sharing. I also liked Byrons book and still refer to it. The one bit that bugged me he said if you followed his program you should weigh the same at night as you do in the morning. What the heck that's impossible for us females. I have however found my night time weight is fairly stable and less prone to wild fluctuatons as in the past.

It seems depressing to live on 800 calories every day but thanks to JUDDD we can enjoy our favourite foods every second day. That sense of freedom is wonderful and the discipline we find on DDs is so empowering.

I'm so happy for you and everyone else who inspires us newbies and all I can say is JUDDD on!!

that is so wonderful Flossy! I'm glad you found this WOE , this WOL and these BUDDs. I'm glad I did too. Your encouraging and uplifting post is another one that keeps me going, keeps me motivated. Yes, JUDDD is almost too easy. If there is such a thing. For me peronally , had never gone without lunch, not since my HS days, long long ago.. But now, it is almost 3 pm, and I don't need to eat. Maybe my metabolism is getting healed as well
What I like about JUDDD too, is knnowing. Knowing yes it works, with just a little effort from me, and I can lead a normal life. I don't feel deprived, and on my DDs, if I can't participate in something, well I actually feel a sense of pride The JUDDDWOE is alf the battle-the other half are the BUDDDS on this board. I am convinced the smartest, nicest ,kindest people are JUDDDers!
thank you for your post, it helped me to get to know you better

Thanks from me, too. You've put it succinctly and I appreciate all my new Budds that have helped me along this path...I wish I were losing a pound a week, but it comes in dribs and drabs for me. BUT who can complain about a 40 pound loss in eight months, with a three month stall...not me.

Thank you all for your lovely replies.

Welcome Suze. Sorry to hear of your recent loss. The people on this forum are incredibly supportive and helpful. In fact, I think using this forum to the max is what has helped me most.

Soren, we each find what helps us best - though I'd never have imagined it would be math that did it for me! Now, when I reach for another chocolate, I remind myself it's all about calorie deficit.

Jaymar, it's what my Mum used to call me when I was little – I never knew why! I hope you soon catch up with your scales.

Mojocat, I've always weighed a couple of pounds more in the evening, even when I was young and very slim – those were the days! I'm always sure to weigh first thing in the morning.
It doesn't feel as if I'm eating an average of only 890 calories per day. That's definitely JUDDD magic!

Sher, thanks for sharing some great NSVs there.

Mary, I haven't lost 1lb every week. Its just such a gift that I can be so relaxed about it during a stall!

Thank you for such a comprehensive and lucid post Flossyliz. You sum up the JUDDD experience and magic. Thank you.

You also point out the tremendous value of the support on here. I have never found anything like it anywhere on the web and seldom in real life either.

I love my JBs and appreciate each and every on of you. Congratulations on your great loss and your acceptance of the Joy of JUDDDing.
