Going to the Asian market after work
 
DH wants fish and they have a wonderful fish counter. It's been a while since I've been there. Anyone have any new and wonderful or new or exotic things I should try?

try corn tea.....it's just roasted corn in a tea bag. when you add sweetener to the brewed tea it tastes like corn pops!

Dunno, but I love to go with my oldest son and wander the aisles for far too long commenting on all. Cheap and entertaining for both of us.

Seaweed snacks! Love 'em! I buy the Korean kind with no added sugar or MSG.

Fresh quail eggs are fun. Hard boil several of them like you would a chicken egg, then peel; looks like Barbie's breakfast.

I get mushrooms more cheaply at the Asian grocery, and also various kinds of shiritaki noodles.

I pick up paneer (Indian cheese that I use in a spicy curried cream spinach dish) in the freezer case.

I tried out a can of eel in tomato sauce with pepper recently. It was ... interesting.

I bought little cakes of palm sugar for a little over a dollar, and coconut milk is less expensive than grocery store too.

I will keep my eyes open and explore! I just realized I asked if anyone had a recommendation for something "new" twice. I must be in an adventurous mood today. :D Plus, how do you know it's new to me? I'm blaming it on the flu!

I read that as two different categories: new and wonderful (e.g., seaweed snacks, quail eggs) versus new and exotic (but not necessarily wonderful) (e.g., eel in pepper sauce). :hyst: I hope you are feeling better; sorry you've had the flu. :console:

I got mochi candies in the asian aisle pre Xmas. Its glutinous rice, and these had taro or red bean. High cal, but a neat treat!

lol...yep...might not be new to you...

Something fun for your daughter might be boba tea.
There are these tapioca pearls, and you put them in milky iced tea or a smoothie, and suck them up with these really fat straws! The pearls are in the refrigerated section, in plastic bags.

Some of our favorites--
black sesame oil
sesame "powder"/flour...tastes really good as a breading!
rice sticks (for pad thai)
rice wrappers (for summer/salad rolls)
unsweetened pickled ginger (as opposed to sweetened "sushi" ginger [gari])

Produce--
Burdock root is a "superfood", and the only place I've seen it fresh is at an Asian market. Often used in soup.
Fresh seaweed
Shiitaki & other mushrooms
*Thai eggplant....I've never actually used these, but they look like lime-sized watermelons! You gotta at least show them to Keira!!!
Lemongrass, if you've ever wanted to try it fresh. I've gotten it from the frozen section, too, nicely chopped up.

If you make bone broth, I've found the soup bones at my Asian market to be much cheaper than anywhere else. They also have chicken feet...I would love to get some & make soup like my grandma used to, but I am afraid my vegetarian son would never forgive me!!! :laugh:

I got pork belly there once (never see it at my regular supermarket), roasted it...so good!!!

Frozen--
I get tobiko and smoked eel as a special treat for myself sometimes...love them with avocado & spicy mayo!

Oh, sesame candies!!! They have these really thin wafers...ugh! I miss them!!!

My first thought was "too bad there is no Asian market close to me". However I Googled it and there are several within 20 miles of my house! Excellent suggestions. I will be making a visit to Little Rock soon!

I ended up getting overwhelmed by all the choices. I'll need to print these suggestions for my next trip.

None of the nori looked any more interesting than what I find at my regular grocery store.

I looked at the pickled ginger but didn't realize there was sweetened and unsweetened versions. I love ginger.

I ended up getting several kinds of fish (this store supplies most of the restaurants in town and is known for their fresh fish). I got a variety of 25 calorie miso soups. I also got some sweet chili sauce for chicken or lumpia. They had frozen lumpia, but I didn't get any as I'm not sure how well it would compare to what we get from the Philipino ladies who sell it by the dozen.

I was a bit disappointed in their produce selection, though the prices were good. It was just smaller than I expected.

I didn't see boba pearls, though we often eat at a Vietnamese restaurant which serves amazing pho and banh mi, and they serve boba tea as well. I'm not a big fan, but will get Keira some next time we venture that way, and see how she likes it.

I totally know what you mean, Dawn. I do the same thing at Whole Foods or Freshmarket. I can't wait to get there and get all the stuff I have been wanting. Then I walk in the door and get distracted by the purple carrots and orange cauliflower (I LOVE PRODUCE!!) and can't remember what in the world I was there for in the first place! I have started keeping a list in my phone. Every time I read about something I want to try I put it in on the list.

I get distracted by all the variety (the store I go to is pretty large...not ginormous, but about the same size as my local grocery store) and sometimes forget the 2 or 3 things I really need. It's an hour away, so I only go every 2 or 3 months (I hit the Indian market, too). Since my son is vegetarian, he really enjoys all the different types of tofu, seitan, noodles, sauces, etc. Makes it easier to cook for him when we have all these international yummies. :)

Our Asian grocery is about the size of a small gas station market lol. There is not a lot of demand for those items around here, I guess. We do also have a couple of tiny Mexican groceries as well. :)

We have H- Mart. It is amazing and HUGE! When it came, it took over a grocery store and 2 other stores in the shopping center. It has a bakery, a restaurant, a make-up/ cosmetics store, a butcher and seafood section, beside the produce and all the normal isles one would expect. I could spend hours in there, but it's usually very crowded and on Sat and Sun they have samples of everything so you don't want to go on a DD! The only bad thing is a lot of the products don't have any English on the packaging so it's hard to tell what flavor things are and the nutritional info is often some french/english/spanish hybrid so I really have to examine that if I'm buying it for DD.

Went to a different Asian market this afternoon. I got durian (I figured I have to try it at least once). I tried it--once. :hyst:

This one had a much bigger selection and lots of weird and interesting things. Mealworms, brains, etc. I spent an hour and a half and only looked at a small portion of the products. I got some sauces, some tom yum paste, nori, various canned fruits I've never heard of, brains for DH, some coconut cookies . . . I think that's it.

Yes, durian has a sort of over-ripe flavor, doesn't it? :laugh:

I used to eat it when I lived in Costa Rica (known as guanabana in Latin America), but it wasn't my favorite. It's really good in drinks or ice cream, though. Just kind of overpowering on its own.

The flavor and texture were pretty good, but the rotten onions smell was just too much for me. :sad:

Maybe the overripe/overpowering thing I am thinking of is the smell, not the flavor.
I wasn't crazy about the texture, but I liked the pulp in smoothies & ice cream.

He has been having a hard time with meat lately, but seems to do well with organ meats, so he asked me to pick him up some brain. Keira and I had chicken last night, while he happily ate his pig brains with no problems. We tried to get Keira to eat some, but she said she has enough brains in her head and doesn't need any in her stomach. :laugh:

I used eat brains on toast as a child and loved them. I should try them again sometime.

I have heard Durian described as ""like eating sweet raspberry blancmange in the lavatory", I haven't ever brought myself to try it even after 20 years in the Far East.

Wow, are you guys tough or what?...Keira is a very smart kid...I would think as she does....I remember my dad would eat pig's feet when I was a kid, and he wanted me to try them but I said...I don't eat feet...any kind of feet..haha..then when I got married my father in law was a farmer, and word has it that he will eat anything that doesn't eat him first...after I saw him slice up stewed pig snout, ..I think I believed it...I'm just a chicken when it comes to trying new food items..I can't even eat sardines if the heads are on them.:dunno: but, I really wanted to try Kimchee..that's Korean pickled veggies..and I was all set to try when I heard that sometimes they bury the kimchee for a year or longer under ground..and sometimes put raw oysters in it...so I backed out.

Actually, I found my mouth watering and myself feeling envious when you said that you were able to get brains at the Asian market. I had lambs' brains at a Middle Eastern restaurant as an appetizer, and they were luscious. Like your DH, I really like organ meats. My local food co-op meat department doesn't sell lamb brains, but I was told to talk to the manager if I wanted to special order some. I'm afraid I'll have to order 50 pounds of brains to put in the freezer, however; I tried to special order sausage casings (i.e., intestines) to make a family traditional dish and was told that the smallest amount sold was 50 pounds (and I needed a couple of ounces worth).

Now I have that Far Side cartoon in my head, about the kid cheating on the exam by sneakily "putting in a bigger brain." :laugh:

I do like sweetbreads (glands of a couple sorts)... My fave restaurant sometimes does them like nuggets...best ones ever, omg. Not sure about trying that at home.
