Potato People-- please verify and summarize for me?

Hi-- I need some help

Can someone let me know if I'm right on what I think I know about the potato thing, and answer a couple of questions:

1) you can have potatoes, up to your calorie limit (on an UD or a DD), cooked any way, as long as there is no fat or protein eaten with them.

2) you can eat other things on that day, but they have to be X hours away from the potato (?)

I think the fat thing is right, but I don't really know about combining the potato with protein?
Like, can I have a potato with some salsa or something, and then later (how long?) have 0% greek yogurt with jam?

I bought 3 potatoes, I'm ready to give this a whirl, but I"m still sort of clueless and links to the long threads and stuff are too much for my ADD brain right now

Please summarize the rules for me!

TIA!!!!
S.

Thank you for asking, Soren. I was considering posting the same sort of question.

Other questions I have: Do you need to eat the cooked potatoes cold for this to work effectively for weight loss? (My very cursory reading suggested that cold potatoes may be a different sort of starch for the body to process than hot or reheated potatoes.)

How much did you strive to eat up to your up day calories while doing the potato hack, and how much does that matter?

If you eat something other than potatoes, removed in time by X hours from the potatoes, what did you pick to maximize nutritional benefits?

Thanks for any and all replies.

When i do a potato day i do not count calories, just eat as hungry. So no ud/dd stuff i don't eat anything on those days, except fat free diet hot cocoa, water, diet soda and then condiments like ketchup and a-1 sauce. I always eat the potatoes hot-cold potatoes sounds really weird to me lol.

Ok-- good info. I like a cold baked potato (I like them hot too, don't get me wrong)-- and I read some of the initial information the same way Svenska did (that cold, after cooking, the carbs are changed and less absorbable..).

back to eating stuff with the potato or on the same day-- do other people eat stuff? I've only have a couple ounces of cucumber so far today...

Can I have anything that's fat-free, or avoid carbs and protein (from veggies and/or FF yogurt) ?

I have done it both ways. I like to experiment.

I have had protein for breakfast. Then 4 hours later taters and then a few hours later more taters.

I had the best losses with straight taters. If you really want to be excited about how well this works, you can look at Mark Sisson's *** site and read all of the fascinating stuff about resistant starch. Good luck to both of you!

I now eat taters every single day! With BB of course.

Ok, so I didn't have much of anything today-- just a bite or 2 of cucumber, 4+hrs ago.

So I can have a giant baked potato for dinner, just no fat or protein before/after.... But I can use sf ketchup, herbs, etc.

Sunday-- what's BB?

We posted at the same time. You really don't need to worry about adding a bit of spices be it ff yogurt, sf salsa, just try to limit fat. Also, cold is really best if you have BS issues. If not, don't need to worry so much. I like my taters somewhat warm. Especially with the broth.

I have added mustard and kraut and had German flavor going on. I think my fav right now is just plain ol' mashed taters with the hot broth poured on top.

sven, in my case, it didn't matter. I have had 3 baked taters in one day or 1 big baked tater and lots of mashed. I also love roasting new potatoes or little reds, and sprinkling with sea salt & rosemary. I mist the taters with a bit of olive oil in my mister then sprinkle the herbs and it is delish!

Thank you for asking the questions, Soren..I was a little confused on it also, and thank you , Sunday , for answering....I have read some over at the daily apple..but..I don't always understand what they say....that's just me..I am easily confused....I personally, did find a difference when I ate the taters cold..they seemed to satisfy me more than when they were hot...I try to do one a week, on a dd..seems like they do reduce my appetite...

Jay, the first time I did this as a hack. I roasted the little red taters and ate them cold for every meal. Sometimes with malt vinegar and sometimes with salsa. It became sort of monotonous, because I didn't try anything different, but it was very satisfying. I lost 4 lbs in 5 days during that spell. I find that adding potatoes in at dinner, even if it is a very small amount is helping me to stay away from snacking later after dinner. Taters, be it white, gold or sweet regulates hunger very well.

I find it interesting and also plausible, even without the evidence (that it does work). However, even when I ate 5 oz of potatoes, I wanted something else less than an hour later. I was trying to limit calories and weighing all of my potatoes, and it really didn't add up to very much on a DD. I ended up feeling starved and deprived.

Thanks for the input Sunday and Cindy. I could see how that would be tough.
I'm used to just having one main meal on dd, so I had about a potato and a half (I weighed them) and then a bunch of water. I'm about where I'd be if I ate my regular dd meal, satiety-wise. I miss having something sweet, but this is just an experiment not forever!

Cindy, did you by chance eat yours warm or hot? I am only asking because the very 1st day I tried this, I ate the taters hot and noticed that I was still hungry. I also think if you do this as a hack, it could work best to do at least two days straight for the starch to do it's thing.

11pm
Omg
I think I just had a blood sugar crash???

I got sort of hot, and then weak and wobbly... And HUNGRY!

I had the other half baked potato, then like a huge amt of salsa from the jar.... Then just about anything carby I could jam in my face.

Oof.

I feel better now, but not a good way to end a dd that started so well.

Live and learn. No more potato only days for me!

S.

I am sorry. I have read of others who had this same type of reaction. In fact, I think Nancy may be one who had this happen, pretty strongly.

I did a potato only DD and this happened to me too. I was in a place where I could heat up a cup of hot chicken bullion, I reclined on the couch and sipped the bullion. After it was gone, and about another 10 minutes of resting, the feeling passed. It wasn't fun but maybe that might help you get through it if you try again?
I also find myself going to bed early on my potato DDs. I've yet to have the insomnia that others report with their DDs, however.

Yennie, I never have insomnia normally although, I had it pretty strong a few years back when I did the Hcg diet where we ate very low cals, 500 cals or less daily. Oddly, I have noticed that it seems to affect the ones who have sleep issues already.

The tests that Mark Mattson researched on mice revealed that in female mice, fasting caused them to lose sleep and become hyper aware.

These crashes happen when people first start the tater hack. If you stick with it, it passes and you get an amazing satiation and calm. Hard to believe when you start with such a profound BS crash.

I had the same thing happen with my first try on the potato hack...in fact , it took me a few ..maybe on the third time, to not have a little reaction...like Cindy says..I was hungry..and also..as Sunday said, I noticed when I ate the potato hot, it didn't satisfy me...then I saw someone talking about the need to have them cold..I tried cold, and it went much better..in fact on the next try it killed my appetite a lot..I'm doing one today, and I hope it will work..I really need to do it tomorrow also because the scale is not moving right now..

I am one who likes to try all different sorts of food. I can't eat a bland diet, if there are other choices (which I've never been faced with not having choices, thank goodness). I won't say never, but right now I have no desire to eat just one food all day, or for a succession of days. I think I'd rather be fat, lol.

Well, I don't think potatoes have to be bland, I had ketchup with my first ones today, Worchestershire sauce with my second batch, the baked one I had salsa with it. All different and nothing bland about any of them.
I really like the plain gold ones boiled and cold with plain salt. Yum.

Yep. I think there are a millioin ways to eat potatoes and I haven't come up with the way I am fixing my last potato of the day yet. I have sweet potatoes but do not eat them when I am doing the potato hack.

I am trying to do a 3 day hack, but something keeps coming up! I am super stalled
Anyways, I made chips yesterday. Cut thick with a spritz of olive oil spray and salt and garlic granules.... mmm... they were so yum. I roasted them most of the time during my other hacks. Boiled aare good too and I would love to try mashed with some gravy (made with water only)...
I think you get the crash with the hot potatoes.. but, if you let them cool then reheat them, they are better. Must be something to do with the starch after they have just been cooked. Anyway, I read something awhile ago about it.

Today is a DD so gonna go food free until tonight when I might make another batch of these chips! good luck to anyone still trying too

Adi,
I thought I interpreted some of the info from the other threads as being able to use sweet potatoes. Am I wrong, or have you just chosen to not use sweet potatoes?
I have done PDDs but not a hack yet. I think having some sweet potatoes would break it up but I have enough ways to fix potatoes without fat that I think I'd be ok if I couldn't use sweet potatoes.
Thanks!!!

PS - for those of you looking for recipes, the potato broth bake is TO. DIE. FOR!! The recipe is in the potato hack thread. Check it out!!!
