Soren's Product Corner: low sugar jam vs. double fruit
Ok, so I'm stocking up before the big storm that's coming, and I've been eating a LOT of 0% greek yogurt with some SF jam, and needed to replenish.
I usually buy Smuckers no sugar added. I know it's made with concentrated grape juice as the sweetener, and depending on the flavor (and where I buy it, i.e. Canada or the US) it's about 20 calories per Tablespoon. It costs 4.99 for a 310ml jar. (that's $0.0161 per mL) So today, I check out, for the first time in ages, OTHER jam. I stick to the double/triple fruit kind, b/c right away, regular jam, OMG, high calories. The Smuckers brand Double Fruit is ALSO 20 calories for 1 Tablespoon, has sugar in place of the grape juice, and that's about it for differences. However, it costs 4.29 for a 390ml jar. ( that's $0.011 per mL) And my store's own "healthy" line (the labels are blue, and are always less fat, less sugar, less sodium, than the competing brand)-- a 500ml jar of double fruit apricot/peach for 3.99. And it's 25cal per tablespoon. So, for less money, bigger jar, and the SAME product, I'll be going with double fruit from now on. This is kind of fun S. |

Inspector Soren, I have a case for you....I like peanut butter, but..a lot of times it hasn't agreed with me...so...in looking for an alternative at the health food store..it was suggested I try almond butter..they had the MaraNatha brand.only about 8.69 a jar..it wasn't very good..IMO...I saw the same brand at walmart for less than 5.00 a jar..so, ok...Ill try it again...save money too...well..still wasn't good...kind of like trying to spread floortile adhesive on your cracker..my question is...do you know if there's any kind of almond or cashew butter that might be a step above what I've been finding? Does Netrition have anything that tastes good , is spreadable, and reasonable in price...thank you in advance for your troublel...it does get expensive to buy things you have to toss out.

Great question Jaymar!
I'm not a huge fan of almond butter myself, and I think my impression is similar to yours. I've tried macadamia nut butter-- omg, really nice-- very rich (more for low carbers than for juddd, b/c of the calories, I'd think) and sort of almost sweet on its own. I buy the brand in the healthfood aisle of my grocery store (white lid, green label I think...). Question-- are you allergic to legumes? B/c peanuts are legumes (think, beans, like lentils and kidney beans) and I believe cashews might be also? Find the smallest jars you can, and instead of throwing anything out, there's a great thread for almond butter bread, which I'll link you to here (b/c if it's just the texture of the butter you don't like, then you can make the bread with it and put something else on it): Almond Butter Bread it's long, b/c there's lots of tweaks-- I think I made this with mac nut butter I wanted to use up and it was great, and I plan on making the bagels (way later in the thread) and bought the pans for that |

Wow, thank you , Soren...I saw the posts and the pictures of the bread and it looks really good..also,...she said she made her own almond butter in the food processor from almond flour...and it looked creamy .so..that could work out really well for me because I buy gluten free bread and it is so expensive..plus it has the texture of a dish sponge...very , very chewy..I can order almond flour from Netrition or some places around here have that Bob's products and they may have it in stock...OK..Good news...this is going to be nice....I'll make it as soon as I get the almond flour..that would work best for me , I think.

Happy to help! I hate to waste food, so if you can make something into something else, that's a win!
I make my own "almond flour" from grinding raw almonds... with skins is cheaper, and blanched/peeled will give a nice white look but is more expensive. Sometimes I buy them pre-ground from the local bulk store. I've not added oil to make my own butter, but I did use up my existing butter with that recipe, and am looking forward to making some more bread as soon as I have some room in the fridge and some time! ![]() |

Soren-
do they count sugar alcohol calories in Canada? Is that why the jam counts are different? I *think* Canada counts fiber calories, too, right? Like FiberOne original cereal in the USA is 60cal for half cup but more in Canada? So confusing as to what to go by! |

btw, cashews are not a legume. They're higher in carbs than other nuts, if that's a concern...botanically, it's a seed, not a true nut; it grows on the outside of a fruit & doesn't have a hard shell.
Cashew butter is REALLY good!!! I used to make vegan soups at a health food store, and used cashew butter for "cream of" (broccoli, asparagus, potato, etc) soups. It's very rich & smooth, with a slightly sweet flavor. If you don't like the almond butter you bought, it might just be too dry. Maybe you could mix it with some oil or butter, or another nut/seed butter. If it's not made from blanched almonds, it just seems kind of "rough", IMO. Oh, I also really like tahini (sesame seed "butter"). ![]() Tahini is nice mixed with honey; the other butters are good with honey or maple syrup, if you don't mind the calories/carbs. It can make them more spreadable & palatable. I can't think of any particularly affordable brands (except tahini; there's Joyva, which is available in most grocery stores)...if you have a good food processor, you might be better off making your own butters. A̶r̶t̶i̶s̶a̶n̶a̶ ̶ Once Again & Tierra Farms were my favorite brands when I was working at the health food store...TF wasn't too expensive, IIRC. But I did get a discount! PS: Artisana was really good but *way* too expensive for me! PPS: MaraNantha isn't 100% almonds...maybe that's why the flavor is disappointing? I looked at it in the grocery store the other day & almost bought it, but I want 100% almonds! --I don't want to pay for sugar & oil!

Tofu- we count them like you do, but these jams have no sa's or even Splenda , just either sugar or grape juice.
I think the ones I get over the border are like Carly's, lower cal and made with Splenda. I'm sure we have fibre one brand, I'd have to check. Thanks for the info pj! I like tahini too! I keep forgetting to buy and use it though. |

Soren & Hopefuls
How much snow are you supposed to get in Mississaugua area? My dd lives in Kitchener area and am just curious. The weather map in the US acts like Canada doesn't exist when showing storm tracks! Thanks a bunch Nan |

NAN - Calling for 10-15 cm overnight and another 10-15 cm during the day tomorrow.
Saying that, it's 10:30PM and the wind has picked up but I don't see any snow yet! The kids are hoping for a snow day tomorrow |

Soren, I buy tahini to make falafel sauce & hummus, and keep forgetting that I can use it for other stuff!
![]() I started getting a new brand from an Indian store, and it's *so* good. I don't even know what's different about it; maybe Joyva is made from toasted sesame, and this one isn't? It's very creamy and a little sweet...not sweetened, just naturally sweet. They already called a snow day here! (The "warning" keeps getting earlier & earlier...originally it was for Friday afternoon, then 9am, now it's 6am.) Last edited by piratejenny; 02-07-2013 at 07:42 PM.. |

No wonder that almond butter wasn't good...but I've learned a lot today..I really don't have any good stores to get natural products...so..I can get some good almond flour...but CASHEWS wow I love them..and I think I have tasted cashew butter before..don't remember where ..possibly on vacation sometime..
I hope that all of you in the path of this storm will stay safe and warm...I'm afraid it's going to be bad..I pray for everyone having to deal with this dangerous weather..I have neighbors from Toronto and they are glad to be in Florida this week...Stay safe, all of you nice people... |

I will be happy if our power doesn't go out...we had 9-day power outages TWICE in a year! We have a well, so that means no well pump & no water...that's the worst of it...our kitchen stove is electric, but I finally got smart & bought a campstove. I have power inverters to hook up to car batteries for lamps & a DVD player, and we have a propane heater, and neighbors with woodstoves & generators if things get dire...but if the power doesn't go out, & trees don't fall on my house, a bunch of snow isn't really a problem...we'll just stay cozy til Monday or whenever we're forced to venture out!
Everybody stay safe & warm! ![]() |

I tried today the Smuckers splenda sweetened raspberry, 10 calories for a tablespoon ... 1 put 2 T. in a 7oz Fage Greek yogurt, added a little more splenda, and enjoyed the heck out of that thing.
(Oh, and my David's tea order just came, and I am wondering how to try them all immediately It's a rainy down day so tea is just perfect right now!)Last edited by calichris; 02-19-2013 at 02:31 PM.. |

LOL Chris! Happy to inspire! I use splenda in my yogurt too (instead of honey) when I really want it and don't want to blow calories on honey
I think the splenda jam vs the grape juice concentrate jam is definitely a US vs Canada thing... I'll have to stock up next time we do a driving trip down Let me know how you do on the tea... I've got a 2nd cup of cocomint waiting for me... raining and stupid here too! ![]() |
