Anyone use "Cascara Sagrada"?
I bought mine at Wal-M - it is the store brand, 450 mg. says take 1 a day but for no more then 2 weeks.
I really like it, no gas, just a nice result!!! (bm) It is new for me and just wondering about it as to how often to take, etc. Thanks ! |

I don't take it because it is usually not recommended. You can develop a reliance to it. Meaning you may not be able "to go" if you don't have it. That is why you should follow the directions. You want to stop using it after the 2 weeks is up. I would be cautious using it every day for those 2 weeks too.

The information about this product has changed more recently and it is known to have gut healing capabilities.
I take a 425 mg cap. The dose to relieve constipation is two caps. I am so surprised that it does not cause any of the 'laxative' effects that other products can. |

Yes, the liver, gallbladder.
The Herbal Resource has a nice article. That is not the www address so you'll have to google. I take a cap most evenings but sometimes forget. |

I would be cautious about it. First, its a stimulant laxative, so it will cause you to develop dependency if you use it regularly.
Secondly, casara sagrada used to be used widely in commercial laxatives made by pharmaceutical companies. It was pulled from the market by the FDA because it contains potentially carcinogenic (cancer causing) compounds and banned. Herbal companies are still alllowed to sell it through the loophole that its an "herb" not a medication. The FDA has been heavily lobbied by herbal companies but has never reversed its position. Also, it *can* cause ab pain or bloating or gas, like other laxatives, even if it didn't happen for your case. Honestly I would look to another source for a laxative if you really need one. |

Years ago, century maybe.
A salesperson at a health food store told me that I could use the stuff everyday for relief. I finally had to see a colon dr. I showed him the bottle and told what the person told me... Dr said, he lied to me. It's very additive....I was like dah.. I got off the stuff. Now I take magnesium or Natural Clam. Good stuff. |

Triphala is supposed to be one of the best herbal remedies for constipation.
We talk about constipation on this board all the time, and I keep forgetting to mention it! When I worked at a health food store, that was the first thing I would recommend to anyone with potty issues. It's supposed to actually strengthen the muscles that help you go, rather than just cause them to cramp, like many other laxatives do! It's an ayurvedic remedy, & meant to be beneficial & healing to the entire digestive sytem, not just something that treats a symptom. Last edited by piratejenny; 02-08-2013 at 01:49 PM.. and was "warned" by the health food store owner when I wanted to try this that it can make us depended on it to "go". I use coconut oil, 1 heaping tsp a day with a good probiotic and I have no problems going anymore! Both are safe and even good for me! |
