Good to hear Dawn! Hey, do you have the shorter pinkie finger than the 1st line on the ring finger thing? it's apparently a pretty accurate sign of gluten intolerance?
Me, today: B: water... I can't quite wrap my head around tea-- I want caffeine, but I was up till THREE AM reading last night (I don't do well coming back from west to east)... I guess I can have one of my many herbals... hmmm... L: if they're not squishy, I'll have a cucumber. D: I'm planning a double serving of 0% oikos greek yogurt, with 1T of honey and 2T of sf jam. as planned: 324 cal.

Sounds good Lynn - Welcome! You will just have to figure out eating at what time of day and what foods satisfies you the most on DD. I have a pretty regular DD routine now. Before I was eating breakfast and typically went over 500 calories on DD but after 3 weeks into it, I can skip breakfast as long as I drink some hot teas and stay at 500 or less.
B - sweet n spicy tea L - can of progresso chicken vegetable rotini soup 140c D - small wendys chili 210c S - 1/2 atkins light meal bar 90c |

Soren, my pinky does come to below the first line of my ring finger. Isn't that weird? I have to check Keira's tonight. I'm also planning to do the pulse test with her in the next day or two.

I've made the banana/egg pancakes and I really liked them. I used one banana and two egg whites IIRC. Keira didn't like them very much though.

Ok, found it-- I shared this on FB a while ago, it came from a LC/GF friend of mine (via her blog/page etc). I'll include the picture too, see bottom:
SO, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE GLUTEN SENSITIVE? What Your Hands Can Tell You About Your Food | Via Dr. Chad Edwards: "If you've read any of my stuff or hear me talk at all then you know I recommend eliminating (or dramatically reducing) gluten from your diet. I have a lot of patients who ask me if I'll test them for Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Yes, I'll test them but I often recommend against testing for gluten sensitivity. Why would I recommend AGAINST testing for gluten sensitivity? Simple. It doesn't matter if they are sensitive to it or not. Gluten has been associated with numerous other medical problems including things like Multiple Sclerosis, Schizophrenia, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease to name a few. Many of these conditions don't show up for decades. Therefore, I believe it is prudent to reduce gluten exposure in order to reduce the risk of these illnesses. Some people are more sensitive to gluten than others. Symptoms manifest differently in different people. SO, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE GLUTEN SENSITIVE? One thing you can do is take a look at your hands for Braly's Sign... Braly's Sign was first described in 1953 by an English Gastroenterologist, Dr James Braly. The majority of Celiac patients have a short 5th finger and this is Braly's Sign. (J Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition 2000; volume 31 (Suppl.3):S29. NEJM, August 18, 1999). In short (pardon the pun), the tip of the 5th finger (pinkie finger) is shorter than the crease of the last joint of the 4th finger (ring finger). You can see an example of Braly's Sign here. Notice that the pinkie finger is shorter than the distal IP joint crease depicted by the red line. Of course, the best option for checking for gluten intolerance is to simply cut it out completely for 30 days and see how you look, feel, and perform." ![]() You can see an example of Braly's Sign here. Hmmmn - mine match up right to the line, maybe just a tiny smidge below. Does the degree of difference mean anything, i.e the more differential the more sensitivity?

I don't know about degrees of shortness... ?
I'm on the fence-- I don't have gluten issues (that I'm aware of... maybe ignorance is bliss...) but I do believe the studies and info about it. Even the summaries of *wheat belly* that I've read have made an impact on me, I can't imagine reading the whole book. Right now, I'm not working hard to get more wheat into my life-- it's a now-and-then thing for me, but when I run out of stuff in the house, I think I'll replace with GF. Now that there's so many products, and if the carbs are the same (and if I don't care as much about carbs...) then might as well-- IMO. I *know* in my heart I should probably do Paleo... the time I tried it, my persisten sinus drip totally cleared up. But I love dairy (the little that I still do have, damn those high calories) and I hated my coconut milk icecream so... sigh.I'm just going to take a loooooong DD shower or maybe a bath, and read, and wait for dinner (to magically appear? LOL). S. |

My hand looks pretty much identical to the picture. I want to rush home and check Keira's, but alas, I'm at work and she's at school.
![]() ETA: I just did a little reading, and it appears Braly's sign can also be a classic indicator of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which I suspect I have. Hmmm. Last edited by KeirasMom; 02-05-2013 at 02:20 PM.. |

Really interesting stuff! Had my banana pancakes for dinner - one mashed banana, one whole egg, one egg white and one T choc PB2. Fried in butter flavored Pam. It was alright. Not amazing but a nice change of pace and filling. Running from the kitchen soon so I can preserve my DD!
