I am having a yummy smoothie! A small avocado, 5 frozen strawberries, honey, vanilla, cinnamon and whole milk (all I had because bf drinks whole milk, and I don't drink it at all usually).

Thinking about adjusting calories - feedback appreciated
Hey gals,
So I've been a bit stuck lately. I haven't been doing this that long so perhaps I need to wait it out but here's the scoop: Lost a few pounds in 3 weeks on Atkins Induction. Whooshed about 5 more starting JUDDD (but I also had the flu during the first week of my JUDDD so...) Last 8 days scale has been stuck at 185/192 (old scale/new scale - like the old one better). Bounced up to 195 yesterday morning but after an almost liquid only DD yesterday (<350 cals total) back down to 192. Here's what I'm thinking. My UDs have been 21-2200 cals, based on the calculator at 20% with light exercise. Except, here's the thing, I've not been exercising due to residual effects from the previously mentioned flu. When I re-calculate, it puts me at 1946/389 with no exercise. So my question is, even though my previous numbers were 2230/446 and I was staying about 100 under on the DDs, is that enough of "too high" on the UDs to stall weight loss? (At least I haven't been gaining!) Today is an UD and I'm thinking of trying to come in at right around 1900 to see if dropping the UD cals get things moving again. Course, I'm also planning on trying to start exercising again today so we'll see. I'm looking at the averages (1338 vs 1167.5) and I'm really wondering if the 200 cals is the answer I'm after. I did really well last summer on a 1200/day diet, just got tired of the restrictions!! (Story of my life.) Anyway, thanks for your thoughts - one of these days I'll learn to write a short post. Jen

Yes. 1100 calories vs. 1300 could make all the difference. I lose when I stay at 320 or under on DDs and under 1800 on UDs. If I raise both of those numbers by 100, I gain after UD., and back down to the same number on DDs, more or less maintaining, but not losing. I think your plan is definitely worth a try. I have a slow metabolism' so can't eat as much as some on UDs.

Jen,
Although you could try a different calorie amount if you want to, if you're going back to exercise it might not be necessary. I was losing on the light exercise level when I was actually exercising, but when I exercised less often it wasn't working. Also, eight days of no scale movement is actually normal for many of us on JUDDD. It looks like you lost slowly on Atkins, then lost quickly when you started JUDDD ... I think you're in between whooshes.

I would recommend that you use 20% WLM no exercise. Most of us really don't burn what we think we do when exercising. Also, part of the reason many exercise is to burn excess calories. There in no point in my opinion to adding them back in. If you are training for an iron man that is one thing, but just general execise is better to use the no exercise option from what we have seen across the board. HTH.

Thanks gals!
Christina, yes, I am also doing measurements. That's what kept me going in my first few weeks of Atkins when I didn't see the scale moving much. I know I'm losing inches and I've always said that it was the clothing fit, inches, etc that was more important to me than the number on the scale (even thin, I'm a bit of a thick gal so I'm never going to be 120 pounds unless I stop eating all together, which ain't happenin'!!) I need to update my measurements, I'm "Officially" doing them every 4 weeks. I guess that is something to do now. Thanks again for the info!!! |

Sore, but better- thanks for asking. I just made her a low cal shrimp dish for lunch. She still gets hungry on DD, but wanted to stick to rotations even though I said she she do whatever feels right this weekend. I think we hear on Tuesday about the results and then of course we will feel better if they are negative- which I truly believe they will be

Do recalulate your calories after about 10 pounds lost or every few weeks? I have lost 7.5 in my first 3 weeks on JUDDD.
Down Days seem a lot easier now in my 3rd week. I'm already over these dreams I'm having though! I didn't measure unfortunately. I guess I still could and start keeping track from here on out. I am waiting for this waist to GO AWAY! |

I recalculated only if losses slowed down, more like every 15-20. I never had to make a really big effort to reduce my UDs. I just seemed to get full on less and less. There is no harm in checking the numbers every now and then just to have an idea of where they should be at, but if your losing I wouldn't eat less. IMHO.

I'm not a big exerciser, but then general consensus around here is to not increase calories for exercise. JUDDD is suppose to be muscle preserving and I have found that I have more muscle definition than one would expect with the small amount of exercise that I can due do to physical limitations.

Getting back on track
JUDDD's, looks like everyone has been doing very well I have let some things get me off track but I am committed to staying the course this time I did a water fast for three days it was hard but I felt really great after the third day Tried some different ways of eating, but I realize this is the best way for me to go Carly said is one of her posts that it is okay for you to have a zero calorie DD. I think that may work best for me, because when I did my water fast, I switched to a all juice fast and I was more hungry on the juice fast then I was on the water fast. Maybe because I knew I was not going to have anything but water so I didn't have to think about what I could have. I think I will do that for my DD just until I hit my goal. I have read that a water fast is great for giving your body and your liver a break. Feel's great to be back here and I am excited for this new journey See you back here take care everyone ![]() |

Welcome back, Sunshine!!! That's awesome that you could do a 3-day water fast!!!!
![]() If you do that on DD's you'll surely get great results. I, on the other hand, could not. If you do want to add a little more calories without cravings, broth seems to help me (and most of us) quite a bit on DD's. |

back Sunshine. That is great if you like the water fast. I take meds at night time that require a bit of food so I almost always have a snack at bedtime. I'm with the group of JBs that don't get hungry as long as I don't eat. If I start eating I wake the hunger monster. I like broth. I really like the Better Than Bouillon. The jar says 1 tsp is the serving, but I always use a half tsp for a mug of water. |

I also don't adjust my calories for exercise. Course, I haven't been exercising much lately - thank you flu.
Tried to run today and made it about 3/4 of a mile before my lungs revolted. This is going to make the 1/2 marathon I'm supposed to be doing in 2 weeks more than a little challenging. Then, in 2 more weeks, I'm supposed to do a 15K with my mom where we have to keep a 15:00 pace. Normally this would not be a problem but if I can't breathe... |

I'm really hungry. I've had 900 calories today already. Is it normal to be hungry when you've already eaten close to 1000 calories?
Maybe because there has been a lot of sugar and carbs involved? Yen, I am impressed with your running. I have never been able to run but have always wanted to. The furthest I've ever run in my life is a mile and a half. I really want to do the couch to 5 k |

Thanks Sher. I'm not feeling it lately. Time was I ran so much I wouldn't even have to train for a 1/2...but those days are long gone.
![]() Having said that, my first race when I started running again as an adult was a 5k that took me over 45 min to finish, having trained with a couch to 5k program. There are some great ones out there. I am not a fast runner, never have been even in my "hay day" but here's my motto: I'm running faster than the people who never start!! For some slow-runner related humor, look for things written by John "The Penguin" Bingham. Hilarious!!! |

On the juice fast option--oy vey, I wouldn't do that! I just read Dr. Robert Lustig's book "Fat Chance," and he views fruit juice (with fiber removed) as negatively as sugary soda--lots of fructose with no fiber to slow down digestion and moderate blood sugar and insulin spikes. No wonder it made you hungrier than just water. If one had an expensive blender (like a Vitamix) that pulverizes the fruit and leaves fiber in the juice, that would be better--but I personally couldn't handle all that sweetness without getting ravenous. Of course, YMMV, but I'd consider eating something with protein or fat (such as a hardboiled egg) along with juice. |

I'm also considering switching from the 15K to the 5K they're also having. Mom will be bummed to shorten the course but better to lower our expectations and actually finish than cause a problem trying... I'm just gonna play it by ear and see how I feel on race day. PS - We lived in NE (near Stinson & County Rd D) for 8 years before we moved to WA. |
