I'm 40. And I had never attributed my emotional issues to JUDDD but after reading the article...you will have to google "paleo myth for women" I am starting wonder...
DD's have never been "easy" for me but I can tolerate them! I have slowly lost almost 10 pounds (depending on the day) and that I am happy about!!! The months prior to finding JUDDD I tried HCG...yuck!!! with no success. I eat low carb - I tend to binge when I don't count my carbs. I have been having intense moods since the summer - emotions ranging from anger, sadness and just plain irritability. Last month I noticed the week before my period was the worst with anger and rage, the week of my period I was a blubbering mess. Down so low....this is when I started considering meds as I just can not live like this. After reading the article I am asking myself is JUDDD contributing to my emotional instability at the moment. No it is not all the time, but it is often enough to seriously affect my life in a negative way. I do want to lose more weight - I'd be happier at 135. I am 5 foot 6. I have spent my adult life between 125-130 until having my daughter at 38 years old. When I was pregnant I had borderline Gestational Diabetes...I always wondered is that is why I can not get back to pre pregnancy weight with ease. After I had DS 13 years ago - I bounced back to pre pregnancy weight within 3 months. I am almost three years later and still 10 pounds to go....

This month I added exercise into my regular regime. I thought this might help me emotionally as well as help the scale move. No on both ends.

Hope, I know that my mood swings started around age 40. It is probably the "change of life" and not JUDDD. I suspect you would experience these issues no matter what WOE you adopted. There may be other WOEs that help, but there is no getting around this time in our life, without some kind of doctor intervention...I started on anti-depressants around age 40 also, and have since stopped. I was not dieting or even had heard about IFing at the time. TOM gets worse, mood wise, and it's all down hill from there LOL! I'm 48 so you've got something to look forward to, girlfriend. All kidding aside, I really do think it's due to biological issues, and JUDDD may make things worse for some, better for some, and neutral for some. It's hard to tell.

I'm taking a break this weekend Cindy and I think I am going to go to the higher end of my calorie range for DD's. I have looked at 5:2 as well, that might not be as taxing on my system.

I've thought about it too, Hope. I am scheduled for an appt. with a doctor this coming Wed. to get appetite suppressants. It is very expensive and not in my budget. I know that is the only way I will be able to stick to very low DD's and lose more than 2-3 lbs a month... I really wish I'd started judding about 15 years ago, lol, and stayed in maintenance. Good luck to you, and I may be joining you...tomorrow determines it. First DD since Tuesday.

Hi Hope I went and skimmed the article. I have heard of some women having sleep issues etc. with JUDDD as discussed in the article. I have personally found I feel better with the fasting, I sleep better and I feel like it has improved my glucose tolerance as I have lost my carb cravings. To sumarize quickly I feel better in all areas of my life. I am a big believer in following your gut. I bet if you are thinking that that article is addressing how you are feeling I would pursue finding out what women with these reactions to IF found worked for them. I could have saved myself so much frustration in my health and fitness training if I just trusted how I was feeling.

Cindy, you sound like you are going through what I did! I never felt depressed but I did walk out on my Dr. Did you try Pterostilbene combined with Resveritol? This works for me. Not a magic cure but noticeable appetite control.

I am using the ptero, and find it helps especially after a meal. Seems to keep me satiated, but it's no miracle. I just dread the hunger and the "work" involved to resist eating. I don't want to overeat or binge on food, I just don't like feeling completely deprived. That said, I have experienced the "high" of not eating on a few DD's and that was amazing (it made me think of what I had read about anorexia and how people became "addicted" to the feeling of control)...was that a negative issue in the article?

Hope I just noticed you had your calorie range in your signature. Those UD calories seem kinda high. Could that be why your loss has been slow?

Eta: for that matter the DD range is kinda high too. May after your break if you choose to keep JUDDDing you can adjust your calories slightly.

I don't think the article addressed anorexia type reactions. I did skim it so not 100% sure. Not something I have tendancies towards. I fall more into the "this isn't working I'm eating catagory".

I just want to come back and say that I have not had any health or emotional issues since beginning IF. In fact, one of the main reasons that I will always fast in some manner, is because of the health benefits.

I am 54 peri-meno, I just lose much slower than my JUDDD budds. Ten years ago, if you were to tell me that I would restrict calories to 950 daily and my weight would shed, but only at the rate of a lb per week, I would have said, "Egads, I will try something else!" I just want to explain to some of our older women, pre and peri that I have seen this happen, time and time again in our age group while watching the JUDDDers lose. In fact, the first couple of months I lost more than I have the last 8 months. I feel fantastic and I don't diet well, so I will not quit IF, just wanted to throw this out there for some of my friends who have stalls. Frustrating? Yes. Reason to quit? No. Not at all.

Dr. Johnson and Jaminet as well as others who support fasting in some form or fashion, have addressed this issue as well. Fasting in women is a whole different ballgame, than with men. You will see men just fly through fasting and weight loss very easily. I know that it makes me wish that we could have their stamina and weight loss.

Losing weight is mentally and physically exhausting and at some point you have to just take a step back, take a deep breath, and ditch the scale in the bathroom closet for a few weeks
^^This is what I'm doing right now. Between the extreme cold of our current home, my Raynaud's, and general stress (possible job change), I was stalling, raging, and suddenly unable to sleep until 5 or 6 in the morning. At first I thought I was 'ruining' my DDs but came to realize I'd moved (naturally) into maintenance-level cals.

It's working.

Once life has settled down, I'll restart weightloss mode and get back on track. I'm very happy at the moment knowing I can do what I need to for my mind and body without gaining. It's a huge relief.

Good job, Rayne. It's nice to know that you have stayed in maintenance without doing DD's. I have been dieting non-stop since Sept. and I took a break this week...not planned but just overwhelmed. Had planned to have a DD today, but did not. I hope to start back on Monday.

LMAO!!! In my defense, I decided on no DD's this week as soon as I got out of bed yesterday. I didn't even have a lot of good food this weekend, but I also didn't have the stress of trying to not eat. It's been a good break.

ETA: I did have 2 DD's (Sun & Tues), so really did 5:2 without meaning to, lol. I can attest that I am up 2.8 lbs from my lowest weight right now. I think I could definitely maintain with this plan. Losing might be trickier.

JUDDD BUDDDs

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye!

9.5 months later - and not quite 10 pounds down it is time to admit this is not working for me.

The signs were there the whole time - I just did not pay attention - I wanted so bad to believe that this was my "cure"!!! Hard to believe I stayed at it for 9.5 months.

I wish you all the best in your quest for weight loss!

My journey is taking a turn in a different direction.

It occurred to me that motherwort might help with these symptoms.
If you're taking pharmaceuticals, you'll need to check the contra-indications.

A summary: Besides the beneficial alkalods in the herbs, it seems that motherwort decreases stress hormones thereby liberating progesterone, which is good for the cardiovascular system function and womens health.

Since the herb does this through its mode of action and not through phytoestrogens like some other herbs, it is also useful and safe for men.

Although it has shown as a great natural remedy in treating heart disease and stress related illnesses, it can be used as a general tonic by men and women.

Hope, I went to Dr. J's calculator and for your age/weight/height the calorie range is 1685/337. I know you exercise, but maybe it would be easier to lose, since you are very near goal weight, if you lowered your calories? If you still have any interest in JUDDD at all, that is. Just wanted to throw that out there! (((Hugs)))
