I sustained a number of injuries in an RTA 4 years ago. From time to time, particularly when I'm due a migraine, the traumatised soft tissues will re-bruise and swell slightly (mostly round my face/head).

I have a lot of inflammation from my kayaking mishap and it's on quite a large scale. For the last couple of days, not only has my face swollen/rebruised and started twitching (oh, yes, I'm quite the looker - think Mrs Rochester in her attic), but the tissue round my previous injury sites has inflamed and shows some bruising.

To me, it's as if the inflammasomes caused by the mishap injury have somehow re-irritated and stirred up the injured tissue that had died down in inflammation terms, rather than fully healed.

I wonder if you have chronically quiescent chilblains, if you see what I mean, and when you're exposed to cold or temperature variation (which can be physiologic, and related to the cold of fasting as well as physical and related to the environment) the stress of the fasting triggers your inflammation markers and stirs up conditions such as the chilblains?

I was wondering about the correspondences because both of us appear to be non-responders to the Pterostilbene and neither of us seems to have experienced the sensation of JUDDD magic or SIRT1s kicking in?

I should say here that I think JUDDD and other fasting patterns are fascinating and have many positive aspects. I think it's interesting to observe cases where odd effects seem to crop up.
These are interesting points, and I've wondered as well about a correlation between my response (or lack thereof) to supplements and SIRTs. Seeing your response really makes me think there must be some sort of relationship there. I wonder if we're just among the "lucky" few who have some sort of wonky internal stuff going on (my technical terms). Or perhaps there's something about our circulatory systems that affects our inflammatory response. I'm also prone to migraines, though not secondary to an RTA, and not nearly as bad as yours. Perhaps the constriction in our blood vessels makes it difficult for the the sirts to do their magic.

Today, I'm going to shoot for a little higher DD. 420-550 or so, and see how it goes. I planned on going up to 600 or so initially when I went back to EOD rotations, but just naturally fell back into the lower DDs. I'm comfortable with low DDs, but am going to try a bit higher to see if there's a better response with my condition.

It's all so interesting to me, how our bodies work, and how they DON'T work sometimes, too.

Dawn I am so sorry about your chilblain. I had to google it as I had never heard of this. I hope that you find a solution soon!

I do get very chilled on my DD's especially and also on my UD's. In fact I am wearing a sweatshirt and have the heater is on under my desk as I type. But I've always been on the colder side but JUDDD has made it worse.

Dawn,
I am sorry to hear this. I know that you discovered your hypothyroidism after you had JUDDD for a while, but did your doctor mention that Raynaud's is linked w/ hypothyroidism? Hashi's? Both being autoimmune? I had to quit fasting ADF due to my hypothyroidism becoming worse even though my lipid/weight numbers were better. My TSH was very high. I had reached a point of freezing all of the time, my hair was falling out, and my skin became very dry. I am medicating thyroid w/ Westhroid and feel fine as far as energy. Doctor suggested that I switch to IF daily, but not for 36 hours and certainly not at JUDDD numbers. Just curious.

If you have time to google, look at connection w/ autoimmune hypothyroidism and Raynauds. Also you may want to search... dental mercury and Raynaud's/hypothyroid.

Interesting reading on the mercury/thyroid/Raynaud's link. Thanks! I don't have many fillings (3), but I've had 2 root canals, and that's referenced in the abstract I read.

My Raynaud's was diagnosed when I was 15. I'm fairly certain I have Hashimoto's, but the antibodies did not show up on my labs. I've read that they only show up when the body is in an active "attack" on the thyroid, so it's not a reliable test. Looking back, I suspect I've had thyroid disease at least since my teens, maybe earlier, and just wasn't diagnosed until last year. (My aunt told me my mom was diagnosed as a teen, though SHE never told me that, my maternal grandmother had thyroid disease, and my niece was diagnosed at 11 years old, so I'd say there's a strong family history and likelihood there!) I intend to have Keira tested starting at around 10, to be safe, or if she shows signs or symptoms before then.

I'm semi-sorta-kinda looking into a 16/8 window. I just don't know.

I have a couple of mercury fillings. Although, I have had them for 45 years, so not sure what to do there?

I do notice that since switching to 16/8 that I haven't been cold as often and certainly not like I use to. Interestingly, I notice that I still have days that I tend to do as a down day. Not intentional, but it is ingrained in me from having JUDDD for almost a year. Two really good things about 16/8, I don't have to take the time to plan my day or worry about going over cals. Nor do I have to count cals. I log my nutrition on cron because I like to make certain that my ratios on nutrients are close to PHD, but I don't worry or obsess. Also, I sleep very well.

I go back for more tests in a few weeks and will report back on my T3, T4 & TSH.

Great minds think alike! I noticed in the daily weights thread that your DDs were about half what you planned for. You're such a pro at low DDs that they are probably second nature, but maybe with the chilblains a higher DD would help? Worth a try! I am a fan of 35% DD for me, and with your exercise, good chance it would be very effective for you. Besides, no rush at this point, right? You're only going from fabulous to possibly more fabulous.

It is interesting that you don't have to plan your day or count calories. I sometimes do an 8 hour window and still go over calories, if I'm not careful. I must be one of the unlucky few here who have huge appetites, lol. I would also have to plan carefully to make sure I got all my meals in on the days I wasn't ravenous. I guess it's become second-nature to you now.

I eat PHD style foods, which really satisfies me. My typical lunch is salad or grilled veggies/fish/steak and then dinner is potatoes/broth/kraut/grilled veggies. I always allow myself Sat/Sun free days, but even then I just sort of guesstimate. I do drink a lot of fluids mostly water/green tea/kombucha.

I am eating more daily than when I did JUDDD. My numbers were 1600/370 which only allowed me 985 avg cals per day. So, I think after eating that way for so long, my goodness, I feel like I am feasting.

You know, some JUDDD budds lose all of their weight eating the higher DDs.
I tried that and it worked in the beginning months, but after about 6 weeks or so I stalled for a while, so I was forced to go back down to 360. I think my thyroid may have been trying to tell me something much early on in JUDDD, but I loved fasting so much and the immediate results in the beginning that I wasn't paying attention. I froze pretty much the entire time.

As far as, eating anything you want while JUDDD, I was one that couldn't do that either. I had to limit my wine, fun foods, and could only eat out once. Really frustrating, because I knew that is not so for most JUDDDers.

I considered if my thyroid tests are good, maybe doing 2 DDs per week and still eat in the window. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I haven't seen one person have good results with MUDDD, so I'm not willing to try it.

I tried to have a higher DD yesterday, and still ended up below 400. Sheesh. There's some mental thing going on with me. I think it's because I have my set DD menu. I'm going to have to play around and see what I can come up with to find that sweet spot with higher DDs but still losing.

Back to the calculator I go!

You're on DD autopilot! You're just too good at this, Dawn.

So maybe keep your routine, but just bump it up a notch? Something I did might be right up your alley .... I realized I had the calories to put cheese on my Wendy's chili! +70 cals. And there's always WINE!

I don't know anything about cocktails, but let me suggest that most Starbucks drinks can pack at least 150 calories if not way more. A Grande Carmel something, something, something is warm, creamy and can boost those numbers!

Those simple bare necessities,
Forget about your worries and your strife...
I mean those bare necessities are why JUDDD Buds DD with ease
Those simple bare necessities of life...

JUDDD - The Musical - so much more than your standard WOE.

Of course, chilblains are so unpleasant that they probably belong better in something more akin to Les Miserables. I wonder if there is a minimum level of energy intake on DD that will keep the physiologic cold at bay. It will be very interesting to see. Also, because of the way alcohol is metabolised preferentially before using other fuel sources, to see if this helps or hinders the chilblains if used to bump up DD numbers.

Eg, I might be wrong, but although people feel warm after consuming alcohol, they're normally shedding heat by dilating pores, and alcohol is a depressant for the Central Nervous System. I've genuinely no idea if nonetheless a DD cocktail (consumed in the later part of the day, before sleep) would keep someone ticking over (because of the availability of the nightcap alcohol as an energy intake) until the next day - without making them cold. Or, if it would worsen the cold. It may be a YMMV or personal experiment that would be worth doing for some people.
