How do you count the calories in pork (back) ribs?
Hi guys,
this is vexing me. For most meat, there's a few choices about how to count it (bone in or boneless), but I can't find pork back ribs. on a calorie counting site, I see a farmer johns back ribs, for about 51cal per ounce. I see that same count from some other places, and that's what I go with. But, is that bone in or bone out? B/c say 16oz at that amount is about 800 cal, but if that includes bones, then you don't get a lot of food! I'm assuming it's boneless (so I weigh it on the bone, then weigh it again after I"m done eating, bones left only, and figure out how much I actually ate). Does anyone have a reliable count for me? S.

LOL Kim
I wish. I hear that if you eat standing up, there's no calories either ![]() I figure DH will want to grill them, but I've got them at 200 in the oven now, I figure "low and slow" till about 7pm and then we'll see... |

Well if you really, really want to know- you can cut all the meat you plan to eat off the bone and weigh it before you eat it. If you used x servings of BBQ sauce you can guess about how much sauce you ate and I would google 1 ounce boneless pork/back rib. See what you get and multiply that by the amount of ounces of meat you have plus the BBQ sauce, but I'd say you can get a rough estimate and be pretty good. This is why this is a good UD food where you can afford to be a 100 calories off and not be done in.

According to Calorie King:
The standard serving of pork spare ribs is 4 oz. of braised, cooked meat. Each serving of boneless spare ribs has 449 calories. We like ribs that are broiled!! Gets nice and brown and ever so good! I serve them with mahed potatoes and some saurkraut on the side. This is making me want to eat some right now but it is a DD!! |

Thanks for the tips folks!
Carly-- that's my problem, it seems really hard to find just plain "pork back ribs"... I could count the meat as "pork loin" (which it pretty much is), but I wish there was a listing for pork back ribs, just like that. oh, and I don't do sauce Leona-- yep, I'm using calorieking, and when I type in pork ribs, I get a bunch of stuff, but no where does it say bone in or out. I'm going with the farmer john's listing. when I compare some of the other listings, they seem similar (like loin, center rib roast, boneless-- is 46 per ounce without refuse). So, I guess I'm answering my own question-- 51 for 1oz of pork rib is ok, and it's without bones (ie. refuse), b/c rib is a bit fattier than the roast. Phew-- got that settled. Now-- world peace! ![]() S. |

Livestrong calorie counter has a number of listings for baby back ribs...not sure if the format will hold but I'll try to copy here: oops, I see format vanished, the numbers after the portion size are calories/fat/carbs/protein/fiber.

I chose the above, b/c there shouldn't be any carbs on sauce-less ribs so the rest would be bbq with sauce or whatever... This one seems about right to me-- it comes to 58 cal per ounce.Notice they say 2 ribs is 4oz... I'll weigh mine to see if I'm on par, but I think this would be bone in. Now I"m confused again -- but when they come out of the oven, I'll compare against these numbers.Thanks-- I always forget to look on livestrong! S. |

That's where I usually look. I think Livestrong is pretty accurate.

I got 640 cals for 4 ribs, dry rub on Livestrong. Yes, I can see where it would be difficult to figure. Another thing you could try is a restaurant's nutrition, if they have a dry rub bb rib plate.

Cindy- that rub might have sugar though. Good idea though about finding restaurant counts.
