Who (besides me) Stopped Wearing Dresses When They Got Fat?

I haven't worn a dress or skirt in years!! I feel like a circus tent with one on, not to mention the thigh-rubbing factor. I know I could wear spanx or panty hose, but all that stuff is extremely uncomfortable when you're obese. I am so looking forward to rocking some summer "frocks"!!

Well, I've always had trouble with dresses, when I wear a size 2 pants I still need a 6 top. The girls are disproportionately large. So size 18 pants size 24 top. I looked like boobs on tooth picks in a dress at my highest weight. I have 2 size 6 dresses that I tried on this past weekend but the top isn't close to zipping... Practically my whole upper back is exposed. I'm not sure how I ever wore them, but one of the dresses is the one I wore on first date with DW and I was wearing it- we even have the picture from that night framed! I also look so young... 29! DW was a cradle robber! She's 17 years older

So happy for your success Carly. I bet you can wear any dress and look stunning!

I wear dresses for weddings and funerals, but I much rather wear pants or shorts daily. I have a close friend who looks very good still (sz 2) and she lost her mother a couple of months ago whom I loved dearly. I wanted to wear a dress to the service and finally decided against. I am 5'4" and can't get passed my waist not being as small as it used to be. Hoping that toning now may get me by this summer. I have another very important event in April, so this is slowly becoming my obsession. Don't you wish we could order a size to be for one day (special occasions) and then magically transform for that event only?

Oh yesss ...well all "tight"dresses. I need to lose a least 15 pounds until I can fit into those again.

The dreaded "chub-rub" as my family calls it, even affects me when I am at my happy weight. Damn thighs!

I wear skirts even though I know I look like a whale in a tent, but they are really comfortable. I wear a pair of my husbands boxer briefs underneath to keep my thighs from touching. I seriously hate my legs touching in general!

I also wear "pirate pants" or loose legged yoga pants. I got them from Target and they are sooo comfy. They're supposed to fold down and they have a fabric tie but I pull them up to keep my belly in. How embarrassing!

I also have been wearing 2 shirts (tanktop and regular shirt) for years now, to keep the backfat wrangled. Otherwise, my backfat just likes to Jabba the Hut around my bra. It's awful.

I haven't worn a dress, skirt or pair of shorts in years. This is the main reason I'm losing. I need to figure out an exercise routine though, for toning.

OH, for the love of....my internet persona keeps typing improper words.
I meant to say, "Can't get past instead of passed" LOL! Long day, bed time.

hot-in-tex, I have decided that my only hope for this summer is to tone or I will miss out on everything.

Wow, that is one good question..I haven't worn a dress in a couple of years..but see,,I really have to wear good Asics Gel shoes to keep my back from hurting as much....can you see me wearing those clunky , big ole clodcrunchers with a dress?..... now that would be a sight to behold.....but hey..after I have more success, maybe I'll try some dressy sandals with a skirt and top.

I'm not crazy about dresses at all, never really have been. I don't like the way my legs look in them. I love going into fitting rooms and trying them on but as far as wearing them in public, no.

No way. I don't even own any dresses or skirts that would fit me right now. I loved wearing them when I was thin, with high heels. Another thing I don't even try right now, high heels! And shorts.....um, no.

Well, then I'm not the only one! Went to bed kind of early after posting this last night, so just seeing your replies. I guess I really notice it at my work because I am the only female that never wears dresses. I love feminine clothes and am excited about being able to buy dresses (one day) again. I like the tip about boxer shorts, but they would have to have a very flat waist band to not add extra poundage, lol, like I need that!

Carly, I would like to see your picture with DW. Haha, at cradle robber. I guess I am too as bf is 32.

I love dresses, I live in sundresses during the summertime.
No waist tightness to bother me.
Yes I too wear the slippery material shorts if my dress is a little-or a lot short!!
I thought dresses made everybody look smaller, no?
They camouflage my rear end!
I miss summer.

I wear skirts a lot, but always wear bike shorts underneath. I hate thigh rub, but am always afraid a gust of wind might come by or horror of horrors I tuck it into my stockings in the back. Yay for bike shorts!

Um... I'm the opposite! I've started wearing dresses more now (but not skirts, b/c I have a really high waist and skirts never worked well for me, even when I was slimmer).

I found a certain style of dress works well for me-- empire waist, or a wrap (works for everyone) or faux wrap, or "surplice" neckline. I'm a bit smaller on top than on the bottom, so the a-line skirt just works

For anyone wanting to see some really nice plus (down to a 10 or 12, up to 3x I think) dresses, with ways to find your body shape and buy for the right shape, google "kiyonna" and also "igigi".

I have to say, having worn pants almost my entire life except for a formal dance, wearing a dress to work is actually kind of liberating
Given that I travel so much, I just throw 1 thing into the suitcase, not 2 or 3 matching pieces.
Some dresses don't even need spanx

HTH!

Most budds are too young to remember when we always wore pantyhose. It was just faux pas to go bare. Needless to say, I can remember my "leggs" pantyhose causing the same issue with my skirt being tucked in. Had the exact same experience as you Cindy when I was 18 and it was so embarrassing! Thankfully, my bf saw it and came to my rescue.

Hahaha, I was "bare" under it...it was spring, my dress was a maxi, and I was tiny. Well I had on underwear!

Soren! I did google those brand names and found a short sleeve sweater dress that I love. They are sold out (at Lane Bryant), it's called LBD (little black dress) and it was on clearance. I LOVE it with leggings! Do you know where I can find something similar?

As soon as the weather gets warm enough I wear a dress everyday. I alway wear bike shorts underneath so I don't have the dreaded thigh rub. I have had 2 plastic surgeries and if I could get back to my lowest weight I would have my inner thighs done. I hate the thigh rub.

Having never been "thin" in my life, I've always wondered, do thin girls not have the thigh rub? Even at my lowest weight where I was a size 8, I still had this problem. Bike shorts or corn starch were my solution but it could be killer in the summer heat.

You guys have me thinking about dresses. I was realizing that when I was at about this weight a little over 10 years ago (I am pretty close to my "high" weight from the last time I lost a bunch) I was wearing dresses pretty regularly. I remember I started a new job, and I always wore nylons, and that first day, the thigh rash was TERRIBLE! I think my thighs must have toughened up or something, because I didn't stop wearing them and it went away.

But anyway, I'm wondering if I'm getting to a weight that I could think about dresses again. Soren, I'm going to google your suggestions and see if I can find anything like those. I love an empire waist, but worry it'll make me look preggers!

I have the weirdest body! I have a very long torso and just average length legs. (Sadly, DH is the same build so Keira's stuck with shorter legs and longer body.) Dresses just don't work for me. The waist on a normal dress sits around my ribs and looks ridiculous. I've tried empire waist dresses, but the girls are large and I have to get a larger dress than is flattering just to keep them in the right place. I occassionally wear skirts, but I've always been more a jeans and t-shirt or slacks and blouse kind of girl. Give me hiking boots over high heels any day!

I can do shorts now that my thighs don't rub together. I bought a pair of shorts probably 7 or 8 years ago, a juniors size 13/14, and for the longest time I wasn't able to get them on over my thighs. I use that particular pair of shorts as a gauge for how far I've come. They are high waisted, but they are still my favorite pair. (and every summer they get a tad bit looser) I am kinda weary about shorts though (unless it is 95 degrees with 90% humidity, then I don't care) because I have a lumpy knee and the back of one of my calfs looks like a bumpy roadmap. I usually wear capris just because I'm self conscious of my legs.

I don't like the look of my legs either, but they're looking better all the time. Maybe I can wear some shorts or capris this spring...summer! And a dress? Wow, i can only dream..... I would love to wear a cute little summer dress...sleeveless and fitted. I got some pounds and toning to do for that one!

I have a weird body shape too. My torso is average, my leggs are long, (I'm 5'5 1/2 but most people say I look 5'8-5'10)and the biggest part of my hips are lower than most peoples hips. I was trying on dresses once at Dillards when I was thin(118 or so) and the salesperson said my body was weird. i was like, thanks
