I am going to the Dr on Thursday!

since I've been posting here there and everywhere about my ongoing stupid illness, I thought I'd announce that I am giving in!

I have a Dr's appt for 1pm on Thursday, to see if I can get rid of this stupid, dry, tickling, hacking, USELESS cough! :annoyed:

I'm still on the fence, after reading a lot of different sites, about whether I have/had the flu or a cold. Never had a fever, but I was taking Advil from the start, and I don't tend to get fevers. I did sweat when I did anything around the house.
No aches, but again, advil.

Cold symptoms, which are a "sometimes" with the flu, and "always" with a cold...

headache-- ya, but I get a lot of headaches anyway, so

Regardless, I get the message, from all my  JBs, that 15+ days is enough!

I will let you know if I get any kind of miracle drug or anything that actually helps me feel better (and get some sleep... you know... LYING DOWN)

:) S.

:aprayer::aprayer::aprayer: that you feel better really soon and MD can give you something!!!!

KeirasMom 01-15-2013 05:38 PM

:hugs: Thank goodness. Anything over a week and I say go get the good drugs! :D

Librarygirl 01-15-2013 05:40 PM

Glad you're going to the doctor, Soren. Hopefully he can prescribe some good codene cough syrup, and you will definitely get some sleep!:console:

Flutter 01-15-2013 06:07 PM

Oh goodness, yes, that is too long to be sick!!! Hugs to you, and so glad you're going in to take care of yourself!!!

jaymar 01-15-2013 06:07 PM

I think it's a good move, Soren....I've heard some people say it took almost 6 weeks to get well, and I've had the remnants of the cough going on a month, I think...so..I'll make a trip to the Dr. pretty soon..it's time for my check up anyway..So..I hope you get some good meds and they get you well quick.

Whitlin' 01-15-2013 07:02 PM

All best wishes, sweetie! ((hugs))

Along with this being a particularly hard year for flu, there is a big resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) in the adult population in this country. If you have a really hacking, exhausting cough, you might suggest that you be tested for pertussis. I had it two years ago and wasn't able to get over it until I got diagnosed with it and got appropriate antibiotics--and still had a residual cough for weeks. I hope you recover soon. :console:

angie1 01-15-2013 08:00 PM

Hope it goes well and you feel better!!

DesertGurl 01-15-2013 08:04 PM

Contemplating the dr. thing myself... Got sick the first week of Dec. the cough was the only thing that's hung around STILL....the dry hacking cough that does nothing but keep me awake... This past weekend flu symptoms showed up again...3 days later and I'm feeling better than i have in ages...all except for the stinkin cough!!! :annoyed: However, this cough is actually productive and feels like it's helping clear out my congestion.. We'll see...

Glad you're going! And Sven makes a good point about the whooping cough..definitely check it out! Hope you get some relief soon! :hugs:

gotitnow 01-15-2013 08:52 PM

:hugs::hugs: Take care Soren. Can't believe the sickness this year. My entire fam sick since before Christmas, and still none of us 100% yet. Our news says illnesses are lasting 2 weeks or longer regardless what we do! My DBIL has been to Dr the third time! Anyway, sorry you and any other of our sweet budds are suffering. Love you all!

LoCarbGal 01-15-2013 10:51 PM

I'm so sorry so many of you are still suffering with this darn thing! Soren, I'm really glad you'll be seeing the doctor. It can't hurt, and better to know if you have something that needs treatment.

I had pneumonia in high school and didn't know it (granted, I was a dippy, totally blond little thing). My dad noticed my cough didn't go away after a bug and wanted me to go to the doctor. I felt fine and wanted to go to school (for social reasons, not academic unfortunately). He insisted and I wound up home for a week on heavy antibiotics! (Thank you Daddy!)

THis is for all the yukie feeling JB.
MY head cold is better, the nausea that creeped back and forth was what bothered me the most. Not to mention the watery eyes, sneezing.
My sinus tract was scaled the best way to explain it.

Sending my :aprayer::aprayer::aprayer: and get well wishes, Dear Judd Budd!:console:

Thanks all! I will certainly report back.

whooping cough? OMG. I looked it up last night after your post, and seems there's not much to do for it in adults... yikes. I'm sure I don't have that, but I am starting to wonder about my sinuses.

Ah well, one more night of sheer misery and then I'll have some answers. Hopefully... :aprayer:

As a former smoker, I usually get bronchitis every year (not this year, yet, thank goodness), and I've found that doctors are getting really reluctant to prescribe antibiotics for that. (Some claim it must be just a virus and make you stay sick for weeks before they'll prescribe anything.) But the doctor that I saw was willing to write a prescription for antibiotics once he was convinced that I had pertussis, and I didn't get better until I'd taken pretty heavy duty antibiotics. Bad coughs can also come from drainage from sinus infections, and those can require antibiotics to clear up, too. And a chest x-ray could be a good idea, too, to rule out (or appropriately treat) pneumonia. Maybe a short-term inhaler would help, too, if you are experiencing respiratory infection induced asthma. I hope your appointment goes well and that the doctor is helpful.

I'm a great believer in putting a warm air vaporizer next to your bed and your chair when one has a respiratory infection, and taking long steamy showers (or sitting in a steamy bathroom). I get respiratory-infection induced asthma, and the more steam I breathe, the better I feel when I have a chest/cough thing going on.

Feel better soon, poor sick JBs! :console:

I did bust out the humidifier as soon as this happened! :)

I just wanted to say, my boss sent me a get-well-soon gift bag! Of gluten free treats!
I think she *meant* sugar-free, and just forgot what I was into ;)

Anyway, at least now that I'm on JUDDD, I can eat them... tomorrow, b/c today's a DD of course :p
(pretzel sticks, maple cookes, and a small box of varied bars... chocolate, chewy, who knows what else).

She needs me well, b/c I'm going back to CA at the end of the month to teach a 1 week class, and at this point, I only have 10 days to recuperate before I leave!

Pray that you kick this stuff right out the door! :aprayer: And it never returns! :help:

DH has had an on-again, off-again, cough always hanging around sinus/cold bug for five weeks. He finally went to the doctor last week. Was told it was a nasty long-lived virus that should finish it's life cycle soon. BUT, in the meantime and because he was in a weakened condition, bacteria had set up housekeeping in his chest: bronchitis. Three days on antibiotics and he already feels better than he has in weeks.

Hope you get a fast resolution too!!!!!

sorenkkg 01-17-2013 01:07 PM

UPDATE: I do NOT have the flu :)
as I thought, I don't have the flu. No aches, vomiting, or fever. I barely registered when she took my temp (I was 37.3C, which is .3 above normal... usually I'm .2 below, but still, not fever).

We talked about all the symptoms, and concluded that I have a cold, and that it is taking people FOUR WEEKS on average to get over this cold.
She checked my lungs, my BP, my ears, I said ahhhhh and everything.

I'm now in "post-viral cough" which is the dripping and the tickling, and coughing without payoff :annoyed:

gargle with salt water to help inflamation in my throat (which she said isn't even that red).

a teaspoon of honey before bed-- my dentist is going to hate this-- to coat the throat so I don't wake up with a coughing fit. She says it works!

a prescription for flonase, the steroid nasal spray, to help with the post-nasal drip.

And she said NOT to use the cough suppressant, b/c she wants what's there to come up, and not get squashed down and infected.

oh, and she said if it gets worse and not better, to come back, of course (i.e. coughing up *stuff*, vomiting, fever).

So, you know me :)
I bought 3 kinds of honey! (manuka (which I've heard lots of good things about), orange blossom, and buckwheat).

I bought throat coat tea (it's the one tea I *don't* have LOL

So, there you have it! I'll try to stop whining about this, since apparently, I might still have a week to go :p

Thanks for all your  and support! Hope all the other sickies get better soon too!

DesertGurl 01-17-2013 01:10 PM

Was thinking of you this morning and wondering how the doc went.. so glad that it's nothing serious!!!

Hope you get to feeling better very soon, honey!:hugs:

Now..on my way to go buy some honey. I am sick and tired of coughing all friggin night! :(

sterlinggirl 01-17-2013 01:35 PM

Yummy honey! Love love your script!! I think we shall ALL go out to get some of that medicine~ :)
Good to know your going to get better!

sorenkkg 01-17-2013 01:36 PM

I don't know if it will help specifically, but I've heard that manuka honey is very healing for a lot of things (like, putting it on skin wounds and it keeps them infection free and helps heal!) so I thought, might as well, right?

LoCarbGal 01-17-2013 01:46 PM

Glad to hear you're healing Soren!

svenskamae 01-17-2013 01:50 PM

Thanks for the update, Soren. I was wondering how you were doing. That sounds like one very irritating cold, but I'm glad that it may be over soon. I think I'd like your doctor; she prescribes the sort of things that my mother taught me to do for a bad cold. Hope you are all better very soon, and get as much sleep as you can! .:hugs:

Flutter 01-17-2013 02:48 PM

I'm so glad it's not the flu, but holy cow, that's one LONG cold! Poor baby!!!!

FTR, I would have a hard time with that script of yours for honey. I don't like it! I don't like it b/c when *I* had a cold as a kid, my parents would make me have a spoonful of honey and whiskey at bedtime! <shudder> If I could get over my flashbacks, I might like it nowadays. LOL!!!

Feel better hun!!!

sorenkkg 01-17-2013 03:04 PM

LOL Melinda! A friend of mine very seriously gave me his recipe (though it might be from the WSJ) for a hot toddy, and it's just booze, lemon, and honey (oh, and some camomile tea to mix it all in). He swears by it, but he's a bit of a drinker ;)

I think the honey was for your throat, and the whiskey was so your parents didn't have to listen to you, knowing you were KO for the night!

gotsomeold 01-17-2013 03:13 PM

Good news! There are some nasty viruses running around. I'm sorry you and DesertGurl encountered one. But, I am truly glad it is not the flu and nothing bacterial has sneaked in!

Flutter 01-17-2013 03:37 PM

:hyst::laugh::D I am sure you're right! As a parent myself, I'm sure they just wanted some sleep! :hyst:

Next time I have a cold, I really should try it again. I can call it behavior modification tx! :D (to get over my flashbacks & anxiety, right?)
