JUDDD for Hubbies??

My husband has been talking about maybe needing to take statins for his cholesterol.

Eating habits have been changed. He really is maybe only 10 pounds over ideal weight for his height, no change from before change in diet to lower cholesterol. New labs pending this coming week...

I think he may be considering doing a modified form of JUDDD if it would help lower cholesterol, so I am posting to see what success others have had with JUDDD and cardiac blood work.

With UD cals at 2400 and DD cals at 1200, this would put him at the upper end of WLM/ maintenance (~45-50%). Have any of you or your husbands experienced drops in cholesterol and other blood work with JUDDD? The much lower DD numbers frankly do not interest him because he doesn't feel he really needs to lose that much weight, a slow drop would suit him just fine. Any input or direction you could offer would be great.

Thanks!!

On April 18, 2012 my DH and I started JUDDD. He felt it was finally a plan he could live with. In less than 3 months, DH lost 40 pounds and was at Goal Weight. JUDDD (as all diets) is much easier for him. The weight literally falls off him. Now, he can go a week with only 1 or 2 DD's and he happily maintains. If he goes up a couple pounds, he has 1 solid DD and it is all gone. I HATE HIM Secretly for it! He is smaller now than he has ever been in the 20 years I have known him.

Monica, This is also the case on most of the other IF plans as well, so it isn't specific to JUDDD. Men rock this plan while women have the slower losses. I can't get DH to JUDDD, but he is CR sans ON.

^^That is my DH to a 'T'. He's far from goal, but he's losing so fast he's lost at least 2 sizes in less than 2 months. Not fair!! Not sure about his bloodwork yet, but he should be due for his annual check-up in a few months. Will be very interesting to see what changes, if any, show up for us both.

My husband's cholesterol is bad too, but at this point in his life he has no interest in making any changes I have gotten him to switch from regular soda to diet, to cut back on sugar, so that's a start at least!

He has also been willing to watch a couple of documentaries with me (King Corn, Fat Head etc), so he has the information, he's just not at a point in his life where he's ready to make big changes yet. I've just got to be patient with him and not be too pushy

After the BBC doc Eat, Fast, Live Longer tons of folks did 5:2 Diet, which is a version of JUDDDD, but you only fast 2 days per week up to 600 cals for men (500 for women). The documentary focused on the health benefits and the anecdotal responses on the web if you do a google search is that all factors can improve - weight, inflammation, chronic pain, blood work - with just 2 days a week modified fasting. Why not start there?

My DH started JUDDD in Oct, and is very happy that he can eat what he wants "every other day"... that restriction on LC was his main complaint, and then when you blow it, you ruin everything.

He's not gotten new cholesterol numbers yet, but that was the impetus in 2012 to get him to lose some weight, seriously.

We do tend toward LC in the house, and let the carbs flow if we're eating out, which we try not to do too much. So, I'm hoping when he does get a new test, his numbers will be ok.

I know there's a direct link between carbs/fat and triglicerides, so that's another reason we avoid them. My numbers (Lc more or less over 9 yrs) have always been good.

Hope you don't kill your hubby for losing fast on JUDDD

And as I recall from the end of "Eat, Fast, and Live Longer" (someone recently posted an updated link for it) at the end he reviewed his blood work with his physician wife and she said his cholesterol was so improved he no longer needed to consider taking meds.

For me this was a big motivator in doing this WOE. My cholesterol was seriously out of control. It's gone from 297 to 229 since I started in August and my ratios are great. My doctor is very happy with me. I give blood again on the 21st, and am anxious to see if I've dropped any further.

I have learned how little my bf actually eats, compared to me, since I started JUDDDing. No wonder I'm 30 lbs heavier than him and 6 in. shorter! He naturally does DD's after a day of eating a lot, so it must be a "thin" thing.

My husband had blood work done in 2009 and just got it done again a few weeks ago after having done JUDDD since May 1st, 2012. For reference, he is 40 years old, 5'10" and about 185lbs.

2009
Total Cholesterol 241
HDL 58
LDL 171

2012
Total Cholesterol 219
HDL 62
LDL 145

I honestly don't know much about cholesterol, but with HDL going up and LDL going down I think it looks good. He was happy with his results.

I eat whatever on up days and stay between 1800 and 2000 calories. On down days staying around 450-500 calories it tends to be low-carb, protein and lots of veggies, as part of keeping the calories low.

It is interesting how infrequently we discuss blood work here. I wonder why that is?

I think about nine months ago we had a thread on it and several people reported seeing major improvements. In the book I believe Dr J says most people on JUDDD see improved numbers.

My last blood panel showed raised triglycerides. But, I was having medical problems at that time (which culminated in surgery and getting better). So, I think the numbers reflected physical stress and inflammation.

On another thread, Yam-Yam just reported happy dance level improvements.

Great idea, thanks!! Not sure he will be willing to go as low as 600? Depends on the benefit to pain ratio if you get my meaning!

This is DH's experience, too. He's been JUDDDing with me for nearly a year now and his last cholesterol panel did not show any improvement. We're hoping, though, that the lowered inflammation that the body experiences on JUDDD will help to prevent the starts of those pesky blockages that he tends to get. Hopefully.

I didn't have bloodwork right before starting JUDDD, so take this with a grain of salt. I remember years ago, my overall cholesterol was acceptable, but my triglycerides were high (when I was 25 or so). My most recent panel in August (now age 40) was very good. Cholesterol is 174. I can't find triglycerides on the panel, so I think he only ordered total.

re: pain for gain.

My DH tends to be super busy at work, back-to-back meetings, etc. Getting him to EAT is the problem, not the DDs

On DDs, he has a coffee with cream, and then he has a protein shake. The he eats what I eat for dinner. Since his daily is around 600+, that works out.

on UDs, it's harder. I usually have to pack a lunch for him, or he won't do it. I go with high fat, LC food-- salami and cheese. easy, no mess, and he can snack on it whenever he remembers.
Sometimes he goes out for lunch with colleagues, miracle of miracles.

then he has dinner with me, and if he needs more calories than I do, he can have wine or chocolate or whatever to boost up his daily intake.

He's really enjoying it (I asked yesterday ).

I think leading by example is the most powerful tool to get hubbies or DWs to join in. DW started in June after she saw how painlessly I lost 25 or so pounds. She juddded for 2 mos and lost 20lbs- not me and I fed her the exact things I ate

Well in September she stopped, but restarted 2 weeks ago. I never pushed the issue. In fact I never even suggested it. I just kept doing what I was doing and lost another 25 or so pounds and she announced she was restarting.

I think she just needed to see it's effective and you really don't suffer on DDs.

Carly, I enjoy hearing this, because I truly believe after watching others as well as myself on JUDDD for the last year, that each individual JUDDD budd is truly a scientific experiment with weight loss. Here in the forum, we have watched JUDDDers who said this method doesn't work for them, and we try as best we can to decipher where the issue is? Should they raise cals or down? Higher carb or strict low? Time window or instead eat many small meals spread throughout? It just happens to be that our chemistry is so different and while we can say this works for me, some may need to keep searching until they find the holy grail.

I hit stalls, sometimes for only a week, and a few times longer, but the one thing I notice is that it doesn't seem to correlate with anything that I can pinpoint? I would be lying if I said it doesn't bother me, but I realize that I will not lose at lightening speed at any method, much less the one that I enjoy. I am enjoying JUDDD and seeing results, so I refuse to quit.
Patience is the key friends.

I didn't mean to go hog wild postulating, just appreciated your post and thought I would throw this out.

Hopefully, DW will join us here someday.

Just got the husband's numbers 2400 UD, 840 DD, would be totally doable for me! But I'll pass it by him and see what he thinks, he asked me about my eating and numbers when I was doing JUDDD previously so that is good. I'd love to do it as a team.

I totally agree, "by example" is the way to go. DH was supportive of me (though, with my first montho of 100000000 ah-ha moments, he was like, do we have to talk about your diet All. The. Time ??? LOL ).

I started last April, he picked up in October. I was helping him count calories, got him set up on a calorie counting site/app, etc.
He never really glommed onto using the tools (he's totally tech savvy, just likes to come to things in his own time) BUT he is better about reading calories on food packages now.

I think once he got into a routine, he was fine. No complaints on UD or DD from him, and he keeps saying he "likes the discipline" aspect of it. I think he means the rotations, which seem simple for him.

My big tip, given that men usually can have more calories on their days than us-- is to give them the extra calories when you're not together.

i.e. on DDs , DH can have more than me. So he has a shake during the day, whereas I do not.
Then we eat the same dinner, and it works out. I don't think I'd be able to figure out how to give hime 100cal more for dinner, ya know?

Same thing on UDs... he has a shake, or a higher-fat lunch, than I do. Then we eat the same dinner (or maybe, if I'm weighing protein, I give him 4 more oz or something).

Anyway, it's working in our house, we're both losing, and happy
