so confused

2 weeks ago I gained 5 lbs overnight. I watched what I ate, had good DD' s and so on, but I couldn't get it to come back off. this morning I woke to a weight of 181 which was another 7lb gain over night again.

I got a lose it app for my kindle. I am tracking everything that is going in my mouth. it shows me at a calorie deficit for the week of 3145. so what the heck?????

I decided to take a laxative tonight to see if that might be a bit of the problem. I drank extra water today also.

I am not understanding these sudden gains with no losses. I understand the small gains here and there with up days, but such drastic gains in a 24 hour period is confusing and a bit concerning to me.

has anyone dealt with this or have an idea what's causing this? my TOM is due soon. but I have never had this much of a water gain with it either. in 2 month's I have figured out I have gained roughly 20 lbs. that's with following JUDDD...... I know this morning i woke to swollen fingers and face, so it has to be water.

Katie, this sounds horrid! I remember the first jump but hadn't realised that it hadn't gone. And now this huge jump.

As you say it must be water, you can't just gain fat like that. But it is so depressing when you are doing everything right.

Drinking lots of water is wise and have a look at the salt content of your food.

Sorry I don't have any more useful suggestions. Would you consider the Potato Hack for a couple of days?

As Cindy says, you can't gain fat in leaps like that. For some reason your body is holding water. Please do check whether you have been eating an unusual amount of salt.

The laxative experiment should be interesting. A few days of potato fast, fat fast, or good old under 50 carbs LC are all diuretic.

How are you feeling? I am wondering about a bug or a hormonal imbalance. If this does not pass - especially if it does not pass after TOM - you might consider talking to your doctor.

My first thought is thyroid issues. Have you been checked recently? It's not uncommon for thyroid disease to present with a huge jump in weight without ANY divergence from your normal eating.

I usually retain water the day following wine or too much salt.

Some reasons that you may have sudden water retention include:

Quote:
1. Standing up for long periods of time (due to the effects of gravity on the fluids in the legs)

2. Circulatory issues, especially damage to the valves in the veins of the legs, which may allow blood to move against the normal direction of the bloodstream (i.e. away from the heart rather than towards it), and accumulate in the legs. This is known as chronic venous insufficiency, and may ultimately cause varicose veins.

3. Hormone fluctuations that occur prior to the menstrual period, during pregnancy, or when taking oral contraceptives.

4. The use of certain medicines, including some blood pressure drugs, corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory medications

5. Hot weather
Burns (including sunburn)

6. Thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism (underactivity of the thyroid gland)

7. Allergies may also cause fluid retention. Note that sudden severe swelling may indicate a life-threatening form of allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Call for emergency help immediately
However, you should see a doc, if you do not see any relief soon because this could also mean other health issues.

Natural Therapies

Deficiency of protein or vitamin B1 may also contribute to fluid retention.

Dandelion leaf, cleavers and uva-ursi are herbs traditionally used for their diuretic action. They may assist the elimination of excess fluid.

Vitamin B6 may help to relieve fluid retention and other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including breast tenderness, mood changes, irritability and fatigue. It may also be beneficial for mild cases of fluid retention from other causes.

Take a broad-spectrum multivitamin to ensure that you are obtaining the daily requirements of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Other nutrients that your multi should contain include vitamins B6 (as mentioned above), B5 (pantothenic acid) and D3, and the mineral calcium. These nutrients all aid the body’s processes for removing excess fluid.

Vitex agnus-castus has traditionally been used to relieve fluid retention and breast tenderness that occurs prior to the menstrual period. It may also be beneficial for other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including tension and irritability.

In clinical studies, grape seed extract has been shown to aid the management of fluid retention associated with venous insufficiency, premenstrual syndrome, and the use of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). It also helps relieve fluid retention, heaviness, pain and itching of the legs.

Ginkgo is traditionally used to improve peripheral circulation (i.e. circulation to the legs and other extremities), and consequently may be beneficial for some people who experience fluid retention as a symptom of varicose veins.

thank you all for the advice. hubby should be starting his new job soon ans we will have insurance immediately because he will be a salary employee. I think I am gonna have my thyroid checked. I was looking into it and it seems like the direction I need to go. between the laxative and all the water I drank yesterday my scale was 177 this am. it still shouldn't be that high. calorie wise for the week it should be a lot less. I was still very swollen this am. but that seems the normal for the last few weeks. I checked over my foods and there was nothing overly salty and its been only in the 20s here so it's not the weather. I am not so sure it's TOM alone because this swelling has been weeks now. hopefully I can figure something out. I read in Dr j. book that if one follows DD correctly one would have to over eat 180 percent to gain a few pounds. there is no way I have done that let alone more to have gained what I did.

Tanya I hope you are feeling better. If you are "backed up" there is 'tea' called 3 Ballerina's that should help with that and bloating from water weight. I would use it sparingly at first, but maybe that would help.

Maybe iced or hot green tea with lemon or water with lemon to flush out some of the fluid if you have been eating salty foods.

I tried to eat more salt yesterday, because my BP seemed low, but my hands feel a tad puffy today. I'm gonna try some lemon water.

do see your MD if it's not getting better!

I can say honestly I am scared of that ballerina tea. but I will try green tea with lemon shortly. I do have a family history of thyroid probs starting with my mom. no I have a normal scale that isn't even a year old. I weighed a 4 lb bag of sugar and it was 4 lbs so the scale is right. I felt this bloat in my Jean on Friday too. that's why I did the laxative. DD kill me with the go problem. I normal take 2 prunes before bed on DD but ran out and forgot to get more so I know that was part of my issue. it's the swelling that concerns me. when I go to work tomorrow I am gonna get my bp taken and make sure it's not over the moon too. it's usually a high normal for me.

ty Kissa!!! I can report so far that I think the problem was the lack of number two! Between the laxative and the million and two bottles of water/tea with lemon, and a clean DD so far. My scale just said 174 before I got my shower! I havent left my bathroom much today lol!!!!

I love JUDDD so much, but the DD's dont like my digestive track much. I try to eat as much veggies and fruits as I can but it doesnt help. I think I may have to check into some pill that will help this (senokot tabs maybe). I tried fiber pills, but I think it left me in a bigger prob than anything. Prunes have been helping, but look what happened after I didnt have any!!

Who would of thought that a little back up issue would put so much on the scale!!! Sorry everyone for the TMI, but if anything we will learn from this!! lol!!!

Tanya,

I used to have a similar issue with DD. I switched my bedtime snack to include 6oz cucumbers=24 cal and 5 oz celery= 20 cal and that helps a lot!!!!

Glad you are feeling better!

Thanks all. I woke to a weight of 173 today. I wasn't all swollen either. I usually have a bed time cup of coffee but last night I had another tea with lemon. I will try that again as that seemed to help too. I will try the cucumber idea too!! my back didn't hurt this am either, I wonder if the back pain was because of all this too. either way I do feel so much better all the way around. the sudden weigh thing kinda had me scared, but now I know what to look at IF it happens again!

Tanya, I didn't log on much this weekend and just read all this. How scary! I'm so glad it seems to be resolving for you! Lack of number two can definitely cause all kinds of bad stuff, back pain included. Congratulations on DHs new job and insurance. I'm sure life won't be quite as scary with that in place. Keep well!

I take a prescription for acid reflux and my doctor warned they can cause low magnesium so you may need a magnesium supplement. The heartburn pills don't interfere with Magnesium, it can deplete you of Magnesium. My doctor told me after 2 months being on the acid reflux medicine I would need a blood test to make sure I didn't need a Magnesium supplement. I took 500 mg last night before bed of Magnesium supplement and I take my acid reflux medicine in the morning. Can you get blood work done to check your magnesium levels?

Gracie I must of miss understood about the magnesium. this would explain a lot! I just thought the bathroom issue was a result of getting older, then throwing in DDs. I want to make a doctor appointment once hubbys insurance kicks in so I will be sure to ask more questions! Thank you!

You're welcome! Also, watch your B-12 - acid reflux medicine can cause that to get too low as well. I have an appointment on the 25th to get everything checked out on my bloodwork too. I hate being on the medicine but the acid reflux is just so awful!!!

I know! It's the absolute worst. I never put it together but I've been suffering from it for YEARS. I finally made a Dr. appointment because I was getting a pain in the left side of my chest right by my breast bone. They ruled out all cardiac/lung issues and then I had the tube put down my throat and VOILA! - it's scarring from acid reflux! If I forget my pill my food comes back up in chunks into my throat I used to get really sick with stomach pains and gagging and never knew why I'm very thankful to finally know what the problem is. If I were you, I would take magnesium/b-12 and see if you feel better. I was getting tingles in my feet/legs (lack of b-12) and very tired/constipation (lack of mag). I just buy mine at my local grocery store (magnesium 500 mg / b-12 high potency)

I use to take loads of prilosec, zantac and nexium. My acid reflux has disappered 100% since juddding, but I was told I may need to restart it to counteract side effects from my arthritis meds. I hope not, but I'll be sure to take my magnesium if forced to restart acid reflux meds.
