I don't do JUDD, but I am starting a potato fast. Is it OK if I join you guys?
I have been doing LC since 2005 but am out of ideas and stalled out. I lost weight last year doing a protein-sparing modified fast. I lost 30 pounds when I was 19 eating 5 potatoes a day with 1/2 cup of skim milk with each potato, in 30 days from 219 to 190 pounds and didn't gain it back. I'm not going to do the milk this time, but will have a fish oil capsule for the essential fatty acids, spices, and a vitamin. I just tried a high fat low protein run with no luck (@90% fat). It's the second time that made me gain weight to higher than I was when I started so I just can't risk it again. It doesn't work with my exercise plan, either, I hit the wall on it. I am 213 this morning; I can't stand the idea of not hanging on to my 100 pound weight loss. I have to turn this around TODAY.

KT--high fat made me gain as well. The potato fast is wonderful. Many people have a hard first day or two. Hang in there. After the fast is over, you may find that adding taters daily is very helpful to ongoing weight loss so long as fat is kept low. Love to hear how it goes for you.

Potato fast went pretty well, I did cheat a little today. I had 1 tablespoon of cheese cake, and 1 oz of sirloin. I run out of willpower when I'm tired.
![]() Got back on track and finished my potato DD at 550 cal. Will report tomorrow |

Blew my fast all to heck yesterday. Was doing good today till I got home from work. I was hungry and wanted something besides potatos. Enter the potato candy experiment.
It was messy, I had a nightmare mess of potato/powdered sugar/peanut butter and wax paper. I salvaged what I could, put it in the fridge and will hopefull turn DH loose on it tomorrow. (He is always hungry but whenever I make anything, it mostly goes bad cause he won't eat it and DD doesn't eat enough to keep a bird alive ) Back to the potato fast tomorrow.I wish TOM would hurry up and visit. This bloat is unbearable! ![]()

This is interesting...
So how many days does one have to do the fast before getting back to regular JUDDDing or LC? I could probably try it for 3 days. Like Tues-Thurs with only 1 UD in the middle. I guess I could see how it feels on my first DD. I am used to protein to keep me satisfied on DD. I NEVER buy potatoes b/c DH doesn't like them mashed and of course now since LCing. I love roasted red potatoes w/ rosemary and sea salt. |

Thanks Ouizoid. My blood sugar dropped from 120s to 85 this morning. I am amazed. That is a normal reading; mine is usually high.
I only managed to eat 7 potatoes yesterday. So far I've only had 3 1/2 potatoes plus a cup of unsweetened almond milk. It really is very filling. |

KT, curious if you are checking bg after eating the taters? I know some showed improving numbers when doing the fast, but I didn't experience that. I had readings over 200 an hour after a potato meal. And it took longer than 2 hours to get below 120 again. I'm afraid to keep trying it with numbers like that. (I did 3 days before quitting).

Enjoying a potato day here. Had a baked potato in a cafe at lunch time, they were happy to serve it plain and bring me some malt vinegar.
Tonight I have lots of little baby news. |

Doing another protein/potato day today. Yesterday's same deal yielded almost no scale movement (.2 lbs). Hoping tomorrow's reading is better as I am feeling a bit deprived today.

Thank you. I'm down another 4 pounds today. I think I'm dehydrating. I'll add more salt. I'm drinking chicken broth. I expect I'll be up tomorrow.
Fasting glucose was 100 today after 15 1/2 hours of no eating and no exercise yesterday. I think this is why it was higher. Or, perhaps I raised the glycemic index of the potatoes yesterday with my cooking methods. I managed to turn one glue-y in the vitamix, and a made microwave chips twice until some were brown and crunchy. I will do the post one and two hour test, but I want to give my body some time to adjust. I'm just coming off of VLC 90% fat. I have heard (I think on a Chris Kresser pod cast) that it takes days to get blood sugar levels back to normal because VLC causes you to appear to have insulin resistance on blood testing. I know I already have insulin resistance. I will check and run to the doc for glucophage if I need it, no worries. I also know I can drop my blood sugar 20+ points by walking around my little hilly neighborhood 4x. I really need to get some weight off. I am getting hip and knee pain with exercise. I have already had a foot surgery and may need another one in the future. Last edited by Key Tones; 01-21-2013 at 12:06 PM.. |

Are you supposed to keep to your dd and ud calorie numbers when doing a potatoe fast?

Wow, this is quite the potato hack. Day 3, and my appetite is GONE. I ate two potatoes around 12:30 for lunch, none for breakfast (wasn't hungry). I had a little unsweetened almond milk in coffee this morning, and I just made avocado chocolate pudding with lemon to preserve to put in the freezer and had a few tastes to check the batches. Still no hunger, and it is 6:30! Good grief, what is this diet??? LOL...

Odd, but nice to know yes?
I was down 3 lbs this morning after 1 potato day. My biggest drop so far. I only do them on DDs now and again. |

I'm afraid to adjust to a potato hack.
JUDDD works for me, having patience isn't my strong suit. But Im staying the course. The though of eating- pushing potatoes into my guts, makes me think of ---gagg me. Now thinking of only eating powdered malt, how theres an interesting hack. |

Are you all on up days now? I don't know how JUDDD works.
I'm on day 8 of the potato hack. I'm down 8 pounds, but I don't think that will continue. I'm a little worried that I'm overdoing it. |

Thanks. I'm all in on the potato experiment. I've been reading about it on the paleo blogs. People lost 1/2 to 1 pounds per day for 14 day. It is a "hack" so it is supposed to be a temporary diet.
Well, we'll see how this goes. I am wondering what happens when I go back to my usual low carb/paleo diet. They are saying they keep their weight off! I'm now a pound lower than I was pre-Thanksgiving. Yes, I got into some mischief over the holidays. Last edited by Key Tones; 01-26-2013 at 01:17 PM.. |

PD#2 was the worst for me. I am glad I stuck it out. I'm losing better now and my hunger is GONE (if you knew me... you'd know how amazing that is!). Try making mexican soup or potato pizza- see recipe thread.

Did anyone ever decide (or try) if sweet potatoes can be used in this process as well?
I've got my potato broth bake in the oven right now. Excites for how it turns out. First potato DD. |

After a 4,000+ calorie day on Friday, I'm feeling the need for some spuds
I did a DD yesterday but my scale is still up a pound this morning Today was a normal UD and tomorrow will be a potato DD. I also have a dentist appt. tomorrow morning, so half the day I'll be numb-which actually works out well on a DD because I won't be craving food ![]() |
