Scale Dilemma!

Ok, while this may not be earth shattering to some, to me it's a pretty big deal in terms of numbers..

I got a new scale yesterday (iHealth, does anybody have one?). I jumped on it around 1pm yesterday when we got home with it, and granted this was after a light breakfast and a bottle of water and a cuppa coffee..It weighed me at 236.6 ... that mornings weigh in on my OLD scale had me at 228.5..

Granted I *did* have food and it was later in the day...it still has me weighing 8.1 lbs MORE than the old one That's ALOT!

So, question is..do I adjust my stats? As in, my beginning weight and current..do I add on the extra 8-somethin pounds??? Wouldn't I have weighed that much more had I had the scale *then*? Am I making any sense?

Weighed this morning and I was sitting at 235.4 after an UD. So.... I am perplexed if I need to make adjustments or just suck it up and take the hit on my losses so far and have it appear that I've lost less than I have just cause of appearance of numbers.

This really bothered me all day yesterday.. but like DH made me remember that the old scale I have had literally for over 11 years So, uh, yeah, I guess we could assume that it's been slightly off

And YES, I am extremely stingy with my pounds lost! If I don't have to ditch those numbers I don't wanna!

Hum... at some point I got a new scale- in the spring I think. I weighed about 4 pounds more on the new scale and I think I just went with that number. I never adjusted my starting weight although I'm sure it was a bit more than the 199 on the old scale. When I got the new scale I'm not sure if I was recording daily weights so that may have made it easier. Sorry I was not that helpful. In a week or 2 you will be use to this scale and it won't seem to matter much.

I think I'd add the 8lbs to the starting weight...because when I glance at people's stats, I like to calculate how much they lost; their starting weight doesn't really mean much to me unless it's about the same as mine & they happen to be women around my age/height.

And that 8lbs is something to be proud of!
I wouldn't want them to get lost in the shuffle if that was *my* 8lbs!!!

Oh Jenny, music to my ears! I mean, I know I'm neurotic and all that.. but it really just seems like the principle of the thing to me... it's 8 freakin pounds! I'm glad someone feels my pain!

Carly~ I debated, and flip-flopped about this all morning I dunno why it's such a big deal to me Of course you're probably right, in the end it really won't matter much once I get going with the new scale! Thank you for your imput, it's important to me!

Also...the other thing that makes me less than happy...that means I'm *that* much further away from Onederland than I thought ..so yeah..I think I want my 8 lbs

That's funny cause I tend to take height into account when I look at starting weights. Like someone who is 5'8" and 220lbs was not as overweight as I was at 5'2" 199 YKWIM?

Do what makes you feel best. For me 8 pounds woud be 2 months work, so I would probably adjust the starting weight.

We are way too focussed on numbers, but it is what it is. LOL

I sure understand you not wanting to give up the 8 lb loss....when I first started Juddd, I had an old scale..it didn't move for over 10 days...so,,ok..I got out the digital scale and had a newbattery for it...then finally...it moved lower...I was trying to sync it with my Dr. scales..the next time I weighed on his scales it was the same as my own..But...the young lady took off 3 lbs for my clothing..I told her..hey, you know these shoes weigh 5 lbs each....haha ..she didn't buy that.

Sally~ yes, we are way focused on numbers totally agree with that! I'm not sure if I was traumatized more by the idea of actually weighing more than I thought all this time.....or the 8 lbs.

Jaymar~ I adjusted my beginning weight and started used the new scale number as of today. I won't lie, it still sucks rocks!

Haha! You think you have it bad? I'm only 5'1 (on a good day ).

I feel for you with you new scale. Just take that number you will probably see a lower number after your next DD anyway do don't worry about it!

Did you calibrate your scale in any way? Like weighing a bag of flour and making sure it weighs the 5 lbs it claims to be? It would be nice to know the scale is "zeroed".

Do you have access to a doctor's scale or a really good one at a gym? I've had scales that I knew were a bit bonkers. My current one, a Tanita, and the doctors agree.

take the difference between the old and new weights and add that to both your current weight and your starting weight. going forward, use the new scale weight. then you get both accurate and get to count the pounds you have actually lost.

I agree with Ravenrose. Also, it is a great idea to weigh a 10 lb weight on the Ihealth to make sure it is calibrated correctly.

Is this the scale that syncs to your Ipad? I looked it up on Amazon and it does have mixed reviews about the way it works. It could be a newer version, but I would hate for you to be receiving faulty weigh ins and then be discouraged.

Oh man ..I freak out with a 2 pound difference from my scale and the weight watchers scale . I definitely understand your concern with 8 pounds difference! I agree with adding 8 pounds to your starting weight so that your loss is accurate! It took hard work to lose those 8 pounds ..you must account for them !

How is the iHealth!? I saw it at Bestbuy the other day ...it links to the iphone?

Angie, honestly I'm not sure I'm gonna keep it I'm gonna give it a few days and see what happens.. The app had issues loading for me on the iPad last night..I kinda chalked it up to being tired seeing as I was doing it at about 1am However, after reading many reviews this is apparently very common.. I don't like the sound of all that and I haven't even used it yet!

There are 2 different versions of the iHealth..mine is the less expensive by about $20.. I just got this one cause it was on sale.... however, I may opt for the other and try it if I don't keep this one. The other option I'm thinking about is a Fitbit Aria..

Yes I remember it being around 60-70 dollars ..so I was wondering what "amazing" things the Ihealth does for that price lol. But for $20 dollars ..sounds like a great deal to me!

I wish it was $20 The one I got was normally $89.99 on sale for $59.99 and I got an additional 20% off... the higher end one is normally $110.00 and was on sale for $99.00 somewhere I can't remember.. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two, the higher priced one wasn't there.

I was trying to avoid the stand-on-every-scale-for-sale-in-the-aisles typa thing but apparently that's probably what I may have to do. I guess that's what I get for just buying a scale without being on it or knowing alot about it besides some slight reading

Danielle, It may end up being a great scale. I didn't mean to imply otherwise, but you are right for the $$$ it costs, it shouldn't have any issues such as syncing or weighing incorrectly.

My scales are not the high end ones, but they seem to weigh the same as others that I have been on at the Dr. & gym, so I think they are generally pretty safe. I don't weigh every day either, but have made a decision to try to this month so that I can see if my JUDDD challenge is paying off.

I'm not sure what your looking for in a scale but for a simple plain scale this one is great! I checked it with a kettlebell and it was within 0.2 lbs.

If anyone does try this one it calibrates the first time you step on it! Mine read 50lbs over first time and I about had a heart attack not knowing it calibrates to the floor!

Mine will give a realy false reading from time to time. Once it read 190.2 lbs instead of 312.8 lbs it realy was now thats a real bummer !

Hay one of our members said she was going to post her weight in kilos indtead of lbs. So
just for the fun I calculated my weight in kilos instead of LBS. So my weight came up to
143 kilos and then it dawned to me my I once considered my goal weight between 140 and 155 lbs.

I have this scale, too, and really like it (once one disregards that first weigh-in).

Like someone said upthread, you really should weigh yourself on both scales at the same time (well, one after the other, really) to see what the difference really is. Because you'd eaten, and drank, and gone through a good part of your day, your eight pounds probably isn't eight pounds. Compare them side-by-side, and then adjust your starting weight accordingly.

Mine is the same as my doctor's. I made sure to check last time I went. I would be very upset is it were 8 lbs less than I thought (I mean, if I actually weighed 8 lbs more than I thought, lol)!! It's up to you whether to change your numbers. After all, the stats are only for you, really.

I have a very old, old scale and I check it every time I go to the Dr. Mine is always 3 # less then the Dr. I also go to a Dr. Clinc that has a scale and asked about using it and was told " sure you can" It too said 3 # more then my old scale. Have you thought about keeping the old scale and checking it with a dr scale? You may be able to just use the dr scale too like I have.

Sometimes "older is better". Of course I use my scale here!!!!!!!!
