Hey Team. Down 14#. losing slow - which I know is best but I love it when the scales give me new (lower) number.. Does any know about long term Ketosis? Can staying in heavy Ketosis for months be harmful.

I dont' think I'd tell most people how much I weighed but I guess I felt comfortable with the girls I work with and since we are all around the same weight I didn't feel bad talking about it. If I was back to 150 lbs then I would never have said anything! I am only 5'1 btw so I'm still not thin by any means but I'm way better off than I was.

I love this thread, thank you so much to everyone for posting your NSVs, i've just spent the last 3 days catching up with every single post on here (43 pages!). You lot are truly amazing!!

I have some small NSVs from this week:-
  • I've been into the grocery store on two DDs this week and didn't get tempted even a tiny bit by chocolate (a big achievement for me).
  • My jeans are noticeably more comfortable.
  • Yesterday i had bit of a shock when i looked down and thought, heck my boobs have shrunk! My bra is definitely not as tight as it was.

JUDDD is starting to work it's magic

Congrats on the 14#! Considering that so many people doing LC would be in ketosis for many consecutive months, I don't think it is considered harmful. But I seem to remember that it can be hard on your kidneys if you have any problems with your kidneys. I'm sure someone else can chime in here with more experience...

YAY for everyone's NSVs!! I love to read them because the scale number moves slow for me so NSVs are far more inspiring to me than the scale.

Mine for this week: I could zip up a skirt I haven't been able to zip in a while.. and I also didn't feel so much of a need to pull my sweater closed over my belly - my muffin top is decreasing!!! woohoo!

I am also loving my new feelings of being in better shape. I can hike up those hills and get up those stairs without feeling like I need oxygen at the top!

I did Atkins for 3 years without a single cheat and never left induction and as far as I know I was not harmed in any way. However, I no longer LC so don't keep up with LC issues.

Not being winded is awesome. I love taking the stairs and getting all the way up and not feeling like I'm going into cardiac arrest

Hi Holden! I think you're doing fantastic! 14# in a month's time is HUGE!!! I mean that in a very good way. KUTGW!

ETA: I do not know about long-term ketosis. I was never able to stick to low carb that long. I do know that fasting also brings on ketosis, but it's mitigated eod when we go back to eating....

My NSV: I measured today and finally saw an improvement. 33.8. Hee he, it's not much over 34, but a few months of seeing the same measurement, you take what you can get!

Read page 52, post #1546. Might answer some of your questions although its been written for a different context.
I'd type it again but the numbing is starting to wear off and my hand HURTS!

Please don't feel bad about that. We all do it! Ask away!!!! I don't think you'll find anyone here that's snarky and won't be happy to answer your questions, regardless if they've been asked a million times or not. It's a great group here!

Agreed - no worries! There is so much info here that it can be really hard to find it so we're always happy to answer again or direct you to the answer. I would normally have been happy to answer your question directly than send you to a link that doesn't really fully answer it but my hand was (and still is) killing me. Something about ripping it open on a nail, getting stitches without it being fully numb & refusing to take the "big gun" pain meds because they make me incredibly sick.
You know what's hard to do with 1 hand? Pretty much everything! At least its my left hand...I can still write.
And this morning I think I need to change the bandage...my fingers are all swollen... grrrr
And I just realized none of this is an NSV. Sorry.

In my journal, the link to which is in my signature line, posts #45 and #47. Somewhere before that I mention that my horse pulled his shoe Thursday night & I had a notion to buy some nails & put it back on since my farrier wasn't calling me back.

I guess my NSV would be that, despite my inadvertent bloodletting, I DID manage to get the shoe back on, its still on and the horse is still sound. More important he be sound than I be sound!

I missed that, too, but glad you are both doing alright. I love the line in your siggy about living an evidence based life... I kinda want to put that in my work e-mail signature, but not sure that would be appreciated by those that already want to kill the compliance officer

Thank you. It was not my finest moment ever. Grrr...
Yah, I wanted to put it on my email too, and I might still but it pretty much sums up how I feel about everything. I don't care what you do, just have a reason for it - as long as the reason is NOT because my breeder/friend/neighbor/second-cousin-twice-removed/GOOGLE said so!

In fact , i do! For the last 20 years, I've been a homecare nurse to 3 siblings with a congenital brain malformation, sadly, only one is still living, but she is 23 and still loving life.

All three had a severe seizure disorder, on multiple meds pretty much since birth. Their neurologist was a progressive sort, and tried all kinds of mega-supplements and experimental meds and treatments on them...including the Ketogenic Diet, which for these kids was a gastric tube-fed diet that the nurses mixed up every day from a carb-free canned formula, Microlipid and a pinch of polycose, only 10 gms of carb per day...I figured it out once at around 70% fat, 25% protein, 5% carb.

Physicians from the earliest recorded history knew that fasting a patient would stop seizures...but of course, one could only fast so long...only relatively recently were the calming, anti-seizure effects of the ketones produced during fasting (or carb restriction) on the epileptic brain well-documented.

So these kids were in profound ketosis for over 5 years, from 3 and 5 years to 9 and 11...they grew and developed...not normally, because they weren't normal children, but there weren't any diet-related issues.

The textbook Ketogenic diet for seizure control for children who eat regular food only lasts 3 years, at that point, any benefit is considered to be permanent. as you can imagine, it is quite a commitment to keep a kid on 10-15 gms of carb a day for 3 years, but many a child with a severe seizure disorder comes to appreciate the anti-seizure effects of ketosis more than candy!

There is a ton of info online about the Ketogenic Diet, check it out. It's not meant for weight loss, the kids who are on it are actively growing, so the kcals are as high as possible.

I'm impressed! I got the Insanity one, and took the fitness test part to work with me (i do home care nursing). This family has 7 children, ranging in age from 4 to 23...none of them could do it, though we all had a good laugh trying!

A couple NSVs this morning...

I had to search all over the house this morning for my brown belt. My pants were falling down!

A co-worker caught up to me in the lunchroom and gave me a high-five. When I asked “what’s up” – what’s the high-five for? He said “You’re looking good!”

I had a NSV this morning. Got a phone call from my doctor with the results of my latest A1C. It's a 4.8, which is lower than it's ever been even when I was very low carb. JUDDD magic really IS magic

Two NSV's that were exciting for me were that I went to the gym after working 13 hours yesterday and all I wanted to do was head home. I get to the gym and I see that I accidentally packed a pair of workout pants that didn't fit yet. I figured just deal with it, you're already here. I put them on and they actually fit. I even had a little room to breathe. Woo hoo!
