Fitbit

Does anyone have a fitbit? I just got a fitbit one today and am going to use it as motivation to keep moving! I also am interested in finding out how many miles I walk per day.

For those haven't seen these, it is basically just a "smart" pedometer that syncs with your computer and gives fun charts and graphs. Also monitors sleep which is pretty cool.

The fitbit one goes for $99 and the fitbit zip is $69. The zip doesn't include sleep monitoring.

I looked into them, but found out I'd still need to use my HRM for some things, so just decided to stick with my HRM.

I don't need anything to tell me how little I am exercising. I have countless pedometers all around the house that have gotten no use in years. I guess I could break them out if/when I start back exercising. Sounds fun though. Enjoy!

I have a fitbit. I got it in early spring. Mine is called the ultra. It has the sleep monitor and was $99. It does the calories burned based on weight and active minutes which is good enough for me. I typically do lower impact cardio for long periods of time. Usually, I track minutes exercised or steps taken for a day and don't pay much attention to the calories burned, the flights of stairs or the sleep montir. I don't have stairs at home or anywhere near by so I hardly ever climb them.

It sounds like a neat little gadget, but the price it too much for me!

Glad to hear you like yours. I live on the fifth floor of a seven story mid-rise so I have plenty of stairs to climb if I want to (trouble is I usually just take the elevator!).

I have one and I love it!! I've had it since March and use it everyday. DH also has one and we have little competitions, lol. He almost always has me beat on steps, since he works in a grocery store, but I always beat him in stairs, since I'm always running up and down them because of the kids, lol! I haven't tracked my sleep lately, because I keep forgetting, but it's very interesting to see just how many times I wake up every night.

My DH got one too! He is way more competitive than me so I'm pretty sure he'll beat me on steps and stairs every day. On Monday he did 100 flights of stairs in the evening. I laid in bed with my iPad and spend an hour on Pinterest.

I may have to look into it. Is the sleep monitor part accurate. I'd love to know when I'm sleep walking aside from the times that I wake DW and then she tells me about it the next day if she remembers. My poor fitbit would be so confused by all the night time activity

I've read it monitors your sleep by how much you move, so it's not that accurate IMHO. I toss and turn all night, so it would not work for me.

I read a long time ago that we change positions like 70 times during the night on average...I guess a bottle of wine before bed would limit that somewhat.

Hum... Even more interesting. I don't think I can roll over in my sleep. When I want to roll over when I'm resting I have to get up and out of the bed and reposition because I have so little range of motion in my spine. I sleep with 2 pillows between my knees and no matter how many times I got up and walked around during the night I wake up on my right side with both pillows there... Perplexing... Seriously!

Here is a screen capture of what the site shows every morning. I think it does a good job of when you really are awakened (I have a rascally cat so it happens pretty often for me). Because it also tracks steps, you can tell if you actually got out of bed.

In this instance, I had my alarm set for 6am (the fitbit gently vibrates) so that is why it shows me active around 6am. I went back to sleep for a while so that is why it shows me inactive again.

I think the sleep cuff it comes with skews your sleep results. I only used that one night. If you wear it on your sleeve like that it does pick up on every movement. I wear mine on my bra while I sleep and I don't have that problem. (Some people clip it to their pajamas.) If I wanted to check my data for what time I got up in the middle of the night to go pee...it is there. But, I don't set the sleep timer to track my sleep and I don't have any fake steps that were actually arm movements or rolling over while sleeping.

The only "fake" readings I really ever notice is that when I drive on a certain road with a hill I get credit for 2 flights of stairs climbed for going up the hill. I can pretty much track how many trips I have taken to town in the last year from those stair counts. Otherwise, I actually climbed stairs once at a hospital, a couple of times at a hotel and a couple of times at the library. lol

I love my fitbit! I find myself getting up and walking around (like pacing while using an automatic gas pump) to keep those results going. I don't use the sleep monitor anymore, but when I did it seemed pretty accurate.

It sounds fun. Jade- thanks for the little graph. I might see about it after the holidays.
