Dawn I am so relieved you are seeing the specialist. Glad you threw your weight about (although there is not much to throw these days).

They really need to due a culture!!
Infection starts at the wound and it does not cause fever, etc until circulating. Otherwise we'd have fever w every little wound. The body begins the battle at the source so one does not become septic.

That may very well not be the case, but do what's simple first!!

So . . . I just got back from the specialist. I do not have an infection or any type of arthritis. While he was examining me, he asked if I have any circulatory disorders and if I'm often cold. I have Raynaud's Disease, but honestly rarely even think about it because it just makes my hands and feet cold. I was diagnosed as a teen and it doesn't normally even enter my mind until something makes me think about it.

I have chilblains from my Raynaud's Disease. It's been cold and that exacerbates the condition. Mine is so far along in the one finger, and ulcerated, that he thinks surgical intervention might be needed. He's referring me to a hand surgeon, and has prescribed something to help with circulation and advised me to also take a baby aspirin every day to help.

I can't believe that never occurred to me! D'oh!

I am also supposed to wear gloves at all times and I got permission to bring a space heater to work. I'm relieved to have a diagnosis, but also freaked out about maybe needing surgery.

Well not the best outcome but at least you now know what it is. I am so relieved that it is not worse, although clearly bad enough. I do hope you won't need surgery but it it is the best thin I am sure you'll cope brilliantly.

Had you been having the 'frozen' fingers that go with Raynaud's?

I have early Raynauds and so far I only get that and then tingling when the circulation gets going again. I am ashamed to say I haven't yet seen my GP about it as it is relatively mild. I do take baby aspirin and have for a couple of years.

Well, I'm so glad you have a diagnosis, and it seems to be fairly (barring the surgery) straightforward to deal with. I hope you won't need the surgery. Sooooo glad it's not an infection. Feel better!

I have the frozen fingers, but with my Thyroid disease which keeps me cold, and JUDDD, which also keeps me cold, I didn't realize it had gotten worse. I've been threatening to get a heated mattress pad for quite some time. I told DH it is now a medical necessity.

Very glad you have a diagnosis, and I hope the news from the hand surgeon is positive.

I also have Raynaud's but have never had chilblains...I think I'll be a bit more diligent in keeping my extremities warm this winter.

Barb, I did ice it yesterday and about died from the pain. I told the dr. I had iced it yesterday and he gave me this crazy look, and STRONGLY advised against doing that again.

DH kept telling me to soak it in warm water, and I refused because of the swelling. Um, yeah, okay, so he wins this one.

Hmm, should I move to Hawaii? Can I write off the expenses due to medical needs? I sure wouldn't mind that!

Your not kidding Dawn! It's cold in NY and has been really damp, too. We need an ouch smiley/frowny.

Every winter I say "This is my last NY winter!" But, I'm still here.
I've been to Hawaii- it's the best! My back/ arthritis really agrees with Vegas/Arizona- but I like the beach.

I was dx'ed with Rhynauds (sp) when I was in high school too. I'll have to watch out for that because with DD shivers on UDs too my hands and feet get really cold.

Hawaii here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawn, even tho now you know what you're dealing with, the thought of surgery must be scary! I hope it doesn't come to that!! I've never heard of Raynaud's Disease. I googled it and understand your pain even better. A heated mattress pad & moving to Hawaii?? Has to be a medical necessity!

If heat is something that helps, I wonder if you have any numbness in your fingers with all of the swelling? The reason I ask is because my son has horrible issues with circulation in both of his legs. Because he is a quadraplegic, his legs get so cold in the fall & winter that we apply warm towels from the microwave alot!! Also, putting him in his whirlpool in warm water is good, too. Today tho, I bought him a heated throw. When he is at his computer or watching tv, it can be plugged in & will help to warm his legs. We just have to be careful & keep a close watch to insure what we apply to his legs isn't too hot. So, if you have any numbness, be careful with heat.

I'm just glad that you know what you're dealing with.

I bet Seabreezes will put you up while you house hunt.

I am beyond glad you now know what is happening. Horrified that the damage may be so bad it requires surgery!

Interesting that we all (including your own doctor) missed chilblains.

Sadly, I've had them on my toes before, so I know what they look like. When I've had them on my toes, though, they've gone away in a day or two, so I guess it never occurred to me that they can hang around longer and actually get worse.

I bought a heated mattress pad, a space heater for my office, and gloves with the flip top so I can use them while I type. I think I'm set. I was quite toasty last night. I actually got too warm at one point!

Lesson learned here, and I hope any of you with Raynaud's or with family members with it, will learn from my negligence in dealing with my own condition. I really had no idea it could get worse than "just being cold."
