Do you add "exercise" calories on a DD?
I was just wondering what everyone thought about this. I've been taking a Zumba class lately and, just due to scheduling issues, it always falls on a DD. Greeeeat. lol. Zumba can burn anywhere from 300-600 calories an hour (some instructors claim their classes burn 1,000) -- so, I'm not sure how or if that should affect my DD calories. They're already pretty high according to the calculator on Dr. Johnson's website (2700 UD/553 DD-- using the 'moderate activity' setting) -- so what are your thoughts? Last DD, I ate around 600 and had a 30-minute Zumba class (which I conservatively estimated burnt about 200 calories). Does this sound ok? Also, I'm usually only hitting 2,000 on UD's (not 2700) -- will this stall me? Thanks for the newb-help! :shake:

I do not/ would not add exercise calories back in since one of the main reasons I exercise even if it is just a long brisk walk is too burn extra calories- especially if in WLM. Perhaps if you are maintaing you may add a bit in, but most of us overestimate how much we really burn when we exercise- YMMV.

I don't know your exact stats, but those numbers sound ppretty high.
If you are say 5'4", 40 yrs old and 227lbs your numbers should be about 450/2100 according to Dr. J's calculator for 20% WLM, which most of us do or start at. So, I wouldn't worry about not eating much over 2000 on UDs.

I don't eat exercise calories back unless I am starving and really need to. I always plan to have at least 100 calories of protein (greek yog, chicken, protein shake etc) after my workout on DD.

I would say listen to your body, eat something if you feel really empty, if not enjoy the extra calories burned ;)

Ok, thanks, Carly! I figured I'd better keep it to the 550 DD's, because that is with the 'moderate activity' setting -- so obviously, it's taking some activity into account. I'm still within my first couple of DD's, though -- so I have to admit, I'm getting a little HUNGRY. Looking forward to the magic... lol

The exercise/activity calories given by Dr. Johnson seem high to many of us, and we stick to the little or no activity option on the calculator, even if we're exercising ~~ unless you're training for a marthon! Just an option to try if you find you're not losing well. The higher DD number should be fine while you're transitioning, but I wouldn't try to hit that 2700 on UDs. 2100 sounds better to me. JMHO.

I would not do it, at least not at first.

If you need them later, maybe.

Thanks for the input, everybody -- I have another Zumba session today -- but I'm going to be keeping it under 550. Feeling good right now, so hopefully that'll last all night. I will be REALLY happy once some appetite suppression kicks in, I'm hoping that will make it easier on the DD's. My mom sent me some green coffee bean extract supplements (she swears by them) and I'm actually thinking about trying them for the appetite suppressing effect.

I typically get in 5 miles a day, 5 days a week. All I do is go by the little exercise option. That being said, my DD's are typically around 600 no matter what exercise I do!

Only time i have ever ate after a DD exersize is if my body felt dizzy or queezy, if i dont listen to my body im sure it could be awfull. I hit Curves 4 times a week and most of those days are DD.. I always feel great befroe durring and after with out food~ Best of luck to you~

Deen I do a lot of Zumba classes, Combat and similar and I never count them. I enter little or no exercise. As lovely Pat (So Happy) so wisely says, why would you work so hard to burn calories only to eat them back?

LoCarbGal 12-05-2012 10:44 PM

Sorry for this temporary threadjack!

Cindy, your Kissa is BEAUTIFUL! What a lovely picture that is. I miss your sweet face, but this is a nice treat too.

She is beautiful- Norwegian Forest? I have 2 that are part Norwegian Forest. I use to have a Maine Coon years ago. We also have a tea cup persian- he looks like Gizmo from the gremlins:hyst:. We have 5 fur babies all together!

Kissa 12-06-2012 03:10 PM

Yes, a Norwegian Forest Carly. I have her daughter too, pure white and totally deaf :( but very beautiful, Daisy by name. I think there may be an album of cat/kitten pictures in my 'profile'.

I love Maine Coones too. Never entirely sure about Persians... I love the longer noses.
