Getting flabby!

Hey guys,

I'm losing a lot of weight... and thus, my skin is getting flabby... especially my arms and stomach and legs! WHAT DO I DOOOOOOO?

I know toning will be good, but two problems... One: I have cervical spine disorder and cannot strain my arms at all! And TWO: I barely have time to hit the gym.

Please help!

There is a lot of discussion about the benefits of dry brushing. There have been some threads too. I haven't done it with any consistency to weigh in on how well it works but some swear by it. Good luck!

Finishing showers with 3 minutes of cold seems to tighten my skin? With the added benefit of the cold burning a few extra calories:-)

I do dry brushing and I love it! Can't tell yet if it's helping with loose skin. But my skin is so soft and smooth. No more little bumps on knees and elbows. It feels less dry, even when I don't use lotion. There's lots of videos on YouTube about how to do it. I do it for about 2 - 5 minutes in the morning before jumping in the shower. Don't forget to wash your brush about once a week!

I find that when I increase my protein intake, my skin feels better. Wow I have never heard of dry brushing! I definitely want to try this

Look into abhyanga, an ayurvedic self-massage technique done each morning with sesame oil before bathing. It's purported to aid with smoothing fatty deposits and firming loose skin.

I'll listen with interest since my physical condition limits my ability to exercise and boy- flab is an understatement. This is part of the reason I'm taking a maintenace break until the new year- I may be at goal minus the skin. Some parts are my body are getting thin- quite thin, but from the looks of the upper arms, thighs and stomach you would never know it.

Kimberly- I'm truly trying to embrace this. Part of the reason for my maintenance break. I need my mind to catch up with my body and accept this skin if it's here to stay. It is ugly- the skin, but like you said- it doesn't mean I'm ugly.

Worried that I will still have to hide in clothes to hide excess skin. I know my sister has lost over 50 lbs and doesn't have any loose skin, but has done it over many years...I need to lose 60ish.

Well girls just today.. i was flexing my biceps, beautiful muscles in my arms and what hangs below it is about 4 inches long of excess skin! I will never be comfortable to be out on the beach in a swim suitt, due to how it looks, but i will look and love that i have it cuz the fat is gone.. This has taken me many months to finally come to this way of thinking... i work at it every day.. love my self!! I am more than just the sum of my parts!

I'm at 2 inches of excess skin beyond where my upper arm ought to end. I can stand at certain angles and disguise it for a photo, but in moving life it is oh so noticible. I still want to lose another 15 pounds at least so I think it may be worse before better. I try to remind myself that at least it's not still full of fat, but it actually didn't look as bad in some ways- the arms I'm saying- the rest of me is way better w/o the fat!!!

Kimberly, that is so positive and also very true. Thanks for the reminder about what's really important. I'm working hard to come to terms with that as well, because I'm too scared to ever consider any surgery. I have the batwings and thigh flaps and the loads of belly skin as well, and it wouldn't be so bad if not for the loose skin on my face/neck which translates to more wrinkles! I can't hide that behind clothes. Still, I happily embrace this over being 7 clothing sizes bigger again.

I do have to start exercising again, which may help tone a bit even if it won't work miracles. I keep saying that and it just isn't happening. I used to be insane about working out every single weekday several years back and loved it back then, but after not working out regularly for a couple years, I'm having a hard time getting back into it.

I love the idea of dry brushing, but I don't think my skin could tolerate it. My first pregnancy was devastating to my abdomen, and my skin is extremely thin/fragile in some areas...it often tears if I'm not careful.

The abhyanga might be worth looking into, though.

I can't find the thread, but somewhere on here people were saying that skin takes years (5-7?) to 'catch up' to weight losses. I'm sure that for some people with poor elasticity (ME) the skin will never fully recover...but that others will probably see at least some improvement in time.

I have read that some of the loose skin tends to tighten up in a 6-month to 1-year period after weight stabilizes.

Staying well-hydrated every day is great for skin health and flexibility, so it's good to aim for lots of water every day when losing water and thereafter.

I've been doing the dry skin brushing before showers and plan to try the oil massage this weekend. This is also an incentive for me to do more resistence and toning exercise regularly--that's something I really need to work on, and they supposedly help, somewhat.

Also, not losing weight too fast--just a pound or two a week--helps prevent loose skin. I'm going to be hitting the non-obese (but still overweight) mark when I lose another 15 pounds. I may up my down day calories after that, so that I lose at a slower rate (maybe 1 pound/week, instead of 2). I never thought I would say that, since I've always been a slow loser, but I'm losing 2-3 pounds/week on wonderful, wonderful JUDDD plus nutritional ketosis.

Finally, I'm drinking homemade bone broth every day, which supposedly supports skin health, collagen, and bone health, so maybe that will help a bit, too.

But I'm too old (in my 50s) to expect my skin to adjust fully to losing over 100 pounds (hopefully) without some excess skin left behind.
