Gosh that sounds good, Katie! I've already been to the store, so settled on ham roll ups and pecan toffee. The toffee is made and hardening as I type.

I want to try those recipes that you mentioned though. Maybe for Super Bowl Sunday!

We've got a bidding war going on right now on one of our items on Ebay. One hour and 25 min. left! It's kind of exciting, lol.

Well, the answer to my question if the toffee needed a candy themometer is yes, most definitely yes. It never hardened.

Wasted 2 sticks of butter, 2 cups of pecans and 6 chocolate bars. It is the consistency of fudge. About 20.00 worth of ingredients. ugh.

Well, I hope you were able to salvage it as fudge?!!!
That's too much good stuff to throw away!!!

For future reference, there is a way to test candy with cold water. That's why some recipes say to boil the sugar to "stages": soft ball, hard ball, hard crack, etc. But having a candy thermometer is handy...I get a lot of use out of ours for deep-frying & other stuff, not just making candy.

Happy new year, everyone! We live about an hour away from any parties that were going on, my son's plans fell through & I didn't want to leave him on his own, so we just got Chinese food; he fell asleep around 9:30, and I knitted and watched Twilight Zone til about 1am.
