OK, is this possible??
Have any of you tried the Walden Farms Whipped Peanut Butter? How is it possible for it to be calorie free, fat free, carb free......? I have tried their chocolate dip that is zero everything. It has sort of a strange texture (you KNOW how I am about textures!) but the taste is not bad at all. I just wondered if the peanut butter is worth trying, or should I just stick to PB2?
Considering I will have to order either one, I am trying to avoid a long delay in getting the tastiest product! Thanks! Laura Last edited by HomeWorkerMT; 11-26-2012 at 08:53 AM.. |

For lack of a better term, is it "gloppy"? That is the reason I have problems with pudding!
The Walden's Farms Chocolate Dip causes the same issue for me; it is "gloppy." The only way I have been able to eat it is spread VERY thinly on a graham cracker. Maybe I could spread it on a banana and disguise the texture! It cost too much to just not eat it!! Most "gloppy" and gooey things do me in!! There are a few exceptions, like chocolate icing, but don't give me chocolate pudding! ![]() Thanks for the reply! Laura Last edited by HomeWorkerMT; 11-26-2012 at 09:04 AM.. |

Way too much time on my hands!
|
I read that the reason Waldon Farm products are able to be Zero Calories is because they are made of ingredients that (mostly) can't be digested, but do actually have a bit of flavor. So they can come up with something that is (sometimes) fairly close to what they are trying to replicate in 0-calorie form.
I've had the peanut butter, and have some on hand right now. As peanut butter, I thought it was a failure. It's texture is a slippery custard-y gel. But, when you mix it about 50/50 with real peanut butter, it cuts the calories of the real stuff in half, and I don't notice that it isn't all just regular peanut butter. I think that would be a great way to use all of their products. Rather than having to put up with the weird flavors and textures of the fake stuff, I just occasionally use it to mix into the real stuff to bring down the calories. Works pretty well that way, and I use these 'blends' even on Up Days sometimes.

Clever as ever, Pat! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
In the UK we get peanut butter or peanut butter. Crunchy or smooth. So on DDs I just sniff it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just keep in mind that in Food Labeling World, "zero calorie" can mean anything less than 5 calories per serving.
So if you have 2 or more servings of a "zero calorie" food, you could be getting at least 8 calories. NBD most of the time, but could add up, esp on a DD! Those WF products are mostly made of cellulose, which is a fiber that humans can't digest, and artificial flavors & sweeteners...so while they might not be absolutely calorie-free, they're probably pretty close! PS--another thing that's a factor for me, is that WF is also nutrition-free. I just can't bring myself to spend $4 on a jar of something that has no protein or vitamins or anything in it. So, personally, I'd go for the PB2. And the texture is definitely more like a real food! ![]()

I went with the suggestion of ordering the cinnamon raisin one. It supposedly somewhat covers the weird flavor. while it's not awful, I tried it and it's still sitting in the refrigerator about 6 months later. all those times I needed something to eat, it never said "eat me now!" so I guess I would say skip it.

Thanks everyone. I have to agree with Sunday, it does seem to have a little bit of a metallic taste. I ate some of the chocolate sauce this afternoon on 1 graham cracker "stick" (1/4 of one sheet), and it was pretty nasty. Maybe mixed in with regular PB it would be palatable. But then why ruin perfectly good PB??

About the only time anyone would want to use the Walden Farm products is when they are really, really needing to cut the carbs and/or the calories. I occasionally, but rarely, use them for anything these days, although I did more in the past. Now I pretty much just eat regular food.. more on UDs and less on DDs.
But I think it's worth experimenting with. Sometimes there are products that a person finds they really like pretty well, and when that happens, it's a help that is welcomed. |

I have the chocolate peanut spread and have not consumed much. It is fairly similar to pudding in texture so I wouldn't recommend this if the texture doesn't agree with you. I took the suggestion of mixing the marshmellow dip in yogurt. On its own
, but in yogurt it is pretty good. |

i remember buying the walden farms peanut butter and being so excited to try it. Unfortunately it tasted like pure chemicals and made me gag. Never again.. smaller portions is the way to go! 1 tsp pb = 40 cals (not too bad!)

But 2T of PB2 is delicious and filling for only 45 calories. I never would have survived early JUDDD with out PB2!

imho, pb2 is quite similar to real peanut butter. Just mix a little with water for a low calorie substitute. My grocery store has it now, next to protein drink mixes (folks must be boosting their drinks with it) and also in the 'health food' section.
I mix pb2 with Walden Farms peanut butter substitute, because I'm trying to use the WF peanut butter up. |

I read an article once about the making of peanut butter, and it said that 'real' peanut butter was always just ground up peanuts with a little salt added. The oil was the peanut oil.
Then the manufacturers found out they could express the peanut oil and sell it separately, and then replace the more precious peanut oil with cheap soy oil. But the flavor wasn't as good. So they started adding sugar to the peanut butter to camoflage the soy oil flavor. And that's the recipe for most modern peanut butter. So, I'm thinking the PB2 must be mostly just the pressed and dried peanut base that remains after the peanut oil is expressed. Is this correct? I'll definitely look for it in my store next time I'm up there. |

Pat, that's exactly what it is. They make a peanut "flour" and remove something like 85% of the oil which is why there's such a dramatic reduction in calories, but it's still just peanuts, salt and sugar. Maybe they add the sugar because of the reduction in oil/fat? Or maybe because we're so used to sweet PB.
