I'm in for a potato down day with blood sugar reports tomorrow. Should be entertaining! My malt vinegar is being procured by dh at the store right now.

Or, it could turn into a medium day with a big low carb meal at the end depending on how the taters make me feel. LOL!

a quote from a comment on FTA (richard nikolay's blog) about the potato hack that I thought was interesting

"The theory why people are calling this a “diet hack” isn’t because of calories. That would just be normal dieting. The reason why potatoes are the chosen food is because they’re basically zero fat and come with high quality protein, something very rare in a vegetarian protein source, and a lot of nutrients. The theory is because your body needs fat to manufacture insulin, if you are eating ZERO fat, it has to pull fat out of storage to manufacture insulin. Because white potatoes are so highly insulogenic and create such a massive, high GI response, it needs A LOT of insulin – which requires a significant portion of fat. Since you aren’t eating fat along with it, it is forced to go to adipose tissue as a source – and needs quite a bit – to make all that insulin.

So when you start combining potatoes with outside sources of protein and fiber – like egg whites, fish or vegetables – you are destroying the “hack.” You are greatly reducing the insulin spike you’re supposed to get, which lessens the immediate fat need from your fat cells to manufacture insulin. The whole point is because potatoes are so massively insulinogenic. If you add stuff, it doesn’t work. It has to be all potatoes.

You could surely do it with white rice too, but it’s not recommended because there’s virtually no protein (certainly no high quality protein) and far less nutrients. Potatoes were chosen because of the very high quality protein, the nutrient density, the high glycemix index and the fact that someone can survive a very long time eating simply potatoes – it is nearly a complete food – you will become ill much faster eating just white rice than eating just white potatoes.

This thread addresses none of this, which is why it’s completely invalid. Ignoring this means you’ve turned it from a “diet hack” into typical CICO, or in this case due to the very short term application, just an exercise in water retention.”

I may join you guys on Monday too. I picked up 5 more pounds of potatoes today

I just bought a ton of produce for big salads so will be trying to use that up all weekend so it won't go bad while I eat potatoes.

Ouiz thanks so much for that last explanation....makes a lot more sense now.

I'll be so interested in reading about all of your weight loss results on The Great Potato Diet here! Good luck to all.

I'm tickled to have the idea of potatoes as a DD food enter the picture for me. I'm still doing my JUDDD rotations in maintenance, but just adding potatoes in one way or another is a lot of fun for me, for a change of pace. Especially enjoying the stuffed baked potato skins. LOL

Good luck to Everyone. You're the POTATO BUDDDs!

Somehow, I left the grocery store with a small bag of little Yukon golds and a bag of red potatoes as well. And a jar of malt vinegar snuck into my cart. I've never in my life had malt vinegar. LOL

I may try this for my dd tomorrow. But I'm nervous because of my blood sugar issues. So I'll be watching that closely.

Just fyi, rice--white or brown, spikes my bg very high, and it stays up there for hours.

So this will be interesting to say the least.

You know, I'm wondering about all our experiences with blood glucose reacting to certain foods, and I'll be very curious to see if any of you report on this after eating JUST potatoes. Normally, we don't eat any food in isolation. I mean, who has a potato with absolutely no butter or sour cream or fried in even a bit of oil? Or not as part of a meal with meat, or something?

I guess what I'm saying is that we may not even know how we react to one particular food ALONE. I've always believed that low fat works because carbs aren't combined with fat. And low carb works because protein and fat aren't combined with carbs. At least not much. This will be very interesting....

I tried the potatoes for breakfast, and was feeling terribly hungry & shaky 2-3 hours later. I was out (errands) and couldn't eat anything. By the time I got home, I was feeling even worse, and gobbled down everything BUT potatoes. Too desperate to take my blood sugar.

Does it take a few days to get adjusted to this WOE?

I know I should have stuck with it for at least one day.
But I might try again tomorrow, and check my blood sugar.

I started the potatoes on a DD but had already had my breakfast of oat bran and coffee with HWC. Then only had a potato for dinner on my UD. Then another DD with just potatoes. Those cold boiled potatoes are so easy to take with me. I had one in the car and ate it on the way home since it was dinnertime. Now I am ready for bed and through eating. I find the cold taters to be very filling.
I am anxious to see what the scale looks like in the morning.

I am a little nervous about the lack of protein. In order to sleep, I have gone to making sure I have 20-30 grams of protein even with a shake in the a.m. But I am willing to give it a try, it will be a good experiment! I will eat as much potatoe as I want, even on what would be a DD on Monday, just in case. And no fat! or other foods but condiments. I am going to go get some cilantro and other herbs to mix it up, make it spicy! And someone said no fat broth was ok? or not? If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.

Coffee in the am will still happen, but nothing in it.

I have to say after my DD potato day, I went up a pound, but after eating everything within sight, including a snickers bar and Zaxby's fried chicken and french fries, amounting to over 2000 calories the NEXT day, I had lost .2. Maybe it was the potatoes after all.

I did a one day DD potato experiment, no fat or other foods (390 cals) and I was hungry. I lost nothing the next day and I usually have a 2 pound drop after a DD. Does it take successive days? Multiple days? If it would work for me I would gladly do it!

I would think it would take more than a day to see results although I saw an immediate drop. I have been maintaining for the past two months and wanted to drop a few more pounds to have some wiggle room for the Christmas goodies that will be all around me. Today was my second DD and for some reason I don't get hungry with the potatoes. Guess I am one of the fortunate ones. Can't wait to see the scale in the am

Ouizoid, did I understand you correctly, that you didn't do UD's or DD's calorie count. But, just ate until you were satisfied? Or did I just imagine that in my hungry mind??
