The salsa con queso is really what keeps me so happy with the potato down days. I have always loved that stuff anyway. I usually take a BIG baker potato, bake til fluffy inside, halve and scoop out the innards; mix with 2 T. SCQ, 1 T. Costco's bacon bits (35 cals, 2.5 fat), a sliced green onion, tablespoon or so of salsa, bit of garlic and onion powders. Mix it up well, stuff back into the skins, sprinkle with paprika, and throw in a 400* oven til they start to brown up a bit on top.

They're good hot but equally good cold, and you can pick up the cold stuffed potato half and eat it out of hand. I like that, for some reason. One half is more than enough for a meal for me, so I get two good meals from one big 'tater.

Very low fat, low cal, satisfying, and tasty.

The other thing I like to do is cut up half a dozen or more potatoes into home fries - I quarter them lengthwise, then cut crosswise into 1/2" wedges. Put those in a gallon ziplock, add 2 tsp. olive oil and a good shake of garlic salt, seal (don't press out the air, it helps if it's like a pillow!) and shake shake shake til all the pieces are coated. Spread out on nonstick foil or parchment paper on a large baking sheet and roast at 400* til browned. I usually do 30 minutes, then turn them over with a spatula, then roast another 12 minutes or so. Let cool (or not!) and you have plenty of 'taters for a couple meals at least. This is DH's fave - he finds them pretty easy to eat at work this way, with a little Tabasco. At home he likes the malt vinegar and a very little chopped fresh onion.

He is the KING of "MUST EAT NOW!" and this is working so well for him! This morning he tried just coffee til lunchtime and said he held up really well with it. He's also down an overall 6 pounds in 2 weeks so he's QUITE pleased about THAT.

If you're doing the potato hack as a down day, knowing that the next day you can have what you want (within reason) is just so liberating. Makes this seem not at ALL like a "diet" (in the bad connotation of that word) and more like - hey, this is all GOOD!

And I too thank Ouis and the others who have gone before me here! So much great info shared! OF course Ouis has ALWAYS been so generous with her knowledge, since way back when as we went through Weight Watchers! This is EVER so much better though.

a ? for those that do PH as a DD

So far so good for me on the PH, on day 2 of a 3 day possibly 4 day hack. I am doing the 5:2 plan and am considering doing the PH for my DDs but I realize I would need to get more creative than just cold with malt vinegar

Do you guys that do the PH for your DD see better results ? Is it just because they are so filling ? Please enlighten me or share your experiences. Thanks !!

I'm going to have to check my local Target for this Salsa con Queso. I don't think I've ever looked in the grocery area.

Had my first UPP day and am at 960 calories. Don't want to go way overboard.

Tomorrow will be a DD but I am going out to lunch. Can we have a large baked potato,
with salsa and some broccoli or lettuce salad? We are meeting at the Sizzler and
I want to do well. I bought a five lb. bag of potatoes today at the .99 store.

Barbo, I do that - this morning (as we do every Tuesday morning) went to breakfast with my Mom. I ordered a baked potato, salsa, and pickled jalapenos. Mixed the salsa in with the potato, chopped the peppers up and added those, and for good measure, put in a little Tapatio hot sauce too!

I don't do any other veggies though - just the taters. NOW if you're doing a non-potato-hack down day, I don't see a problem with it - but if you're doing the potato hack, from what I've read you're best to stick as close to just potatoes as possible, with a couple little things as condiments perhaps.

Salsa, vinegar (malt vinegar is yummy with taters!), salt & pepper, some of that nommy Salsa con Queso cheese sauce (VERY low in fat/cals), SF ketchup - that kind of stuff seems OK.

Good luck! We are DIGGIN' this around our house!

2nd day of PH and down -1.4 so that is 3 lbs in 2 days. Today doing PH Day and still not sure if I will do my DD day tomorrow regular or PH. I feel fine and I've noticed my IBS symtpoms are less. Last night was the first time I felt a little off. Hard to explain but not a big deal, this morning I feel fine. Friday is my big weigh in & as long as I am below my last DD 126.8 and I can see a more downward trend next week I will call it a success !

I went off the potato hack for dinner last night. I had two dinner rolls. Shortly after dinner I started having stomach issues that led to a race for the potty. Has anyone had this sort of distress? It could be unrelated but I have been wondering lately if I have some gluten intolerance (usually gassy). Sorry TMI. I was wondering if the bread was too much after having gone so long with out eating it (LC).

Could be the reintroduction of carbs. Would be hard to pinpoint your issue. But more likely it was the abrupt, richer (in comparison to plain potatoes) fat and protein you had with those two rolls that caused that reaction. I had some potty issues on my last break between hacks, too. And I did NOT eat 2 dinner rolls. So it might be the abrupt reintroduction of fat and protein that causes that response. I plan to always do what SlowSure recommended to me, to reintroduce those slowly over a couple days and not abruptly. That prevented the gastric response for me when I went out for my anniversary dinner on the 19th. I planned for it and stopped my hack 2 days earlier.

You girls would be proud of me. We were out getting some groceries awhile ago and hubby wanted to swing in to Cotton Patch and have lunch. Well I ordered a BAKED POTATO! Waiter was astounded that's all I wanted. I did put 1-2 tsp. butter on it, but that's all. No rolls, no meat. Hopefully I won't gain, but prolly won't lose today either.

I looked for the poblano SCQ at "my" Target today but they didn't have it. Color me sad.

Will try the other Target a few miles north of here and see if they might have it, or maybe I can get it online! LIGHT BULB MOMENT! [trots off to check out Target online....]

ETA: well boo - they don't have it online either.

I looked both places, Ouis - no luck. In fact I looked up and down every aisle! I DID get a jar of their white queso but no poblanos in this one, just jalapenos. Not that that is a BAD thing......

Well, I'm still at 169. That's 2 days without a loss, so I think my body is on to me. I'll stop my hack for 2 days, eat mostly veggies, little fat, very little if any protein, and resume on Friday. That way I can get another 5-day hack started and done before my brother flies in from Seattle on the 1st for 10 days.

cutey pie pic Peggy! I always see a 72 hour delay between my DDs and any weight loss. Same in reverse for weight gain. Maybe something to do with glycogen processing by the liver? Anyhow, just a thought that tomorrow may show some progress? WL is never linear is it

Good Morning all JUDD BUDS

Down I go today. I want to have a Chinese DD. Here's my plan.

Chicken broth with egg shreds and baby spinach
Egg Fu Yung Patties w. Chinese brown gravy
2 fresh fish cakes (held together with egg and oat fiber)
fried in 1 tsp. ghee.

Protein shake.
Iced Constant Comment De-Caff tea.
1/2 c. frozen strawberries.
Will come back with "My Plate" totals.

Sounds good Barbo!

Yep, weight loss is not a linear process, to be sure. I expected my weight to be up today after yesterday's UP day but it was DOWN almost a pound. Go figure!

Good for you, Char! Thanks Ouiz. This pic is more recent than my other pic that reflected me at goal weight (why I kept using it, as motivation). This current pic is at my lowest and current weight of 170, taken a couple summers ago. You might be right, and I know weight loss isn't linear. But I think I'll suspend my hacks when I have a 2-day period with no weight loss. With me, 2 days invariably stretches into 4-5 days. Been MY weight-loss pattern for decades. But I will not stop for as LONG as I did last time. Just 2 day cessations, so I won't regain too much hopefully.

Only regained 2# this break. So I'm starting PH Round 4 today at 171. I'll do it for 4 days this time, until my brother flies in Wednesday.

Hi Peggy, Char and you all

what is a PH day? Does that mean potato hack?

How many calories to do potato hack?

Would like to try it as it's simple but am a little concerned
about being diabetic, although I am very under control.
I tried fasting from wake up until 4:00 p.m. but that one
bit me where the sun don't shine.

I wanted to thank all you ladies for the great advice. My 3 day PH netted me a 3lb loss. After my regular DD of 500 calories, only protein I dropped another 1.4 to 125.6 which is a number I hadn't seen in about t 4 weeks. I ate normal UD and only went up +.6 which is very good for me. Today I did eat out and had some white wine and chiles rellenos & some salsa with chips. Let's see what the scale says tomorrow. I have another UD tomorrow and Mon. another DD and hope I can stay in the 125s.

Will likely do a PH every month or so. I did notice my IBS symptoms have improved dramatically. Without getting into too much detail I can't believe how big of an impact it had on my digestion. For that alone it is worth it to me to do the PH routinely.

Potatoes seem to have been soothing for a number of people who've done the hack (especially those who are FODMAPs sensitive, have IBS or similar issues).

Very pleased to read that you had such a positive experience with it, so much so that you're going to incorporate it into your overall weight management strategy. Yay for the potato.

A PH is a potato hack. If you're doing a potato hack of consecutive days, the standard advice is to eat plain potato (with condiments or a Tbsp or so of some of the sauces mentioned above) and to eat it to satiety and not beyond. So, you might be going over your notional DD allowance but after you've done it for a couple of days, you tend to have such a degree of appetite suppression that there's little concern about overeating plain potato.

If you're thinking of just eating potato on your DD and keeping your JUDDD rotation (with UD as your usual sort of food) then you would be well advised to have an estimate for how many you'll eat on a PH DD. If your usual DD kcal allowance is 400kcals, I'm guessing that's at the 20% WL level, so you could eat up to 700kcals of potato (if you were so minded) and still be within a WL allowance. That more generous allowance might be a useful buffer to have in mind if you're concerned about managing your blood sugar.

Good luck

Barbo, I do recall Keytones saying either here or at the MDA thread that she is diabetic and has had no related issues potato hacking. Don't know if she is currently doing a hack or not. I believe she did it last time for 21 days straight, too (I haven't gone past 11 days myself). Maybe she'll see this and jump in here. Seems like she said she dropped her FBG from 120 to 80 doing this. Maybe you could PM her and ask her about any diabetic concerns/Q's you have. Of course, as always, YMMV from hers.

I've been thinking of adding a weekly PH day to my routine. I'll still keep doing my 5:2 plan and I eat in an 8 hour window. Not sure if to do my PH day after an UD or a DD ? Since I'm eating to hunger on the PH not sure if after a DD I may feel too deprived by doing a PH. This week going to do Mon DD, Tues UD, Wed PH, Thurs UD, Fri DD, Sat/Sun UD. Let's see how it goes scale wise for me. Last DD I weighed in at 125.6, would like to see 124ish again. Keeping my fingers crossed this works
